Do not open your eyes. Burn the books. Do not enter any odd looking areas. Investigate NOTHING. And I do mean NOTHING. Not science, not art, not music, NOTHING.
Never leave the house.
You may survive several sessions.....

Call of Cthulu is awesome. Roleplaying temporary insanity is a blast. And who cares about survival, there's no rest for the wicked

From what I recall, they took the "Hastur, Hastur, Hastur!" rule out of the latest edition because so many people would take that as their character's first action, or somesuch. I just recall my GM not doing anything about it.

Yeah, pretty much. If the characters haven't learned the name in game, it shoudn't do anything. Except mark em as the kind of players who are perfectly willing to use out of character knowledge in game. They probably would get off on having their character "invent" smokeless powder and an AK 47 in a high fantasy setting too...

CoC or the first printing of the Dieties and Demigods book.
AD&D- Hastur is one of the great old ones. Saying his name attracts his attention, and he always does does something about it (Send a minion, or show up in person).
Not sure of the CoC rules on him. Probably gives you insanity points. But then eating a muffin gives you insanity points in CoC...

According to HP Lovecraft, the Necronomicon says that speaking his name aloud gets you eaten by invisible forces.

My first CoC char was a parapsychologist, 'cause I thought it would be fun.
...
My next char was a farmer who vehemently followed Kintire's advice, heh.

My first CoC character was a pre-generated Sergeant in a 70's british police department, and the other players were various police officers and one secretary. I had the pleasure of going schizophrenic without the other players knowing, and jumping up screaming to a former militant civilian to "GIVE ME THAT @#%$ GAS MASK RIGHT NOW OR I'LL BLOW YOUR @#%$ HEAD OFF WITH THIS GUN RIGHT HERE, KAPISCH?!?" (well, without the kapisch). This was at 5am after 8 hours of CoC ... I got props for waking up the rest of the group

...
What is that anyway, a CoC based Full Motion Picture I presume?
EDIT: Letting the trailer finish loading so you can see the whole thing isnt a bad idea. H. P. Lovecraft's Dagon ... so it's not CoC based, it's based on the same author's work as CoC... Edited by: Elerion at: 3/2/02 12:08:02 pm

Well, it's not "CoC based", because it's based off the same writing CoC is. So yeah, a movie based off the same books the game is. (There are more, I just posted this trailer because it's new.)

Sorry about the lack of warning, I wasn't even thinking of that factor when I linked it.
The release date on imdb.com says 2001, but I don't know if it was finished then and not released yet, or was released straight to video, as I haven't seen it in any theatre.

From what i gather(i've never heard of it either):
CoC is a P&P game, where you play a character with insanity.
There are many rules such as the books kills you, and you get insanity points for doing crazy things(awarded by DM).
I'd guess imagniation is a big part(just like most p&p) and that you have to think of really crazy things to do, since your going to die and lose no matter what.
EZ_Zoogie
03-17-02, 06:22 AM
Heh. Sounds fun.
EZ_Matheren
03-17-02, 06:44 AM
actually, you're an investigator of paranormal stuff. except, all the paranormal stuff you come across adds to your insanity (magic, monsters, etc). you're trying *not* to become crazy, except it's pretty much inevitable unless you happen to die first.

Call of Cthulhu is based on the horror novels of H.P. Lovecraft. It is set in a universe where mankind is an ephemeral incident in an ancient universe. The Gods are an evil, hostile set of TTMWNMTKs, and there are a load of ancient powerful near unstoppable beings called Great Old Ones. Who are sleeping or imprisioned about the place. Cthulhu is one of these.
One of the premises of the game is that humanity exists in a sort of cosy delusion of importance, and as the truth becomes known the human mind is unable cope and goes mad.
Magic involves calling upon these beings and their servitor races, and is essentially demon summoning and tapping of power. You can play a magic user, but you will have a relativly short career. And that's relative to a bunch of people with the life expectancy of a soap herring.

drakinn, the d20 CoC rulebook is supposed to be released on the 20th. check www.amazon.com and the wizards.com stores for details on it. it was done by monte cook (www.montecook.com), who's done some awesome gaming stuff over the years. :P

What does God think about these Great Old Ones?
EZ_Kintire
03-18-02, 09:20 AM
Its an maltheist background.
Although, to be fair, a surprising number of these TTMWNMK seem to be duffed over. Dormant in sunken cities, sealed underground, imprisioned in lakes on Aldebaran IV, sealed away so as to be unable to enter the world unless summoned, locked gibberingly insane at the center of the universe etc et-multiple-cetera, so I guess something harsh must have been done to them at some point by someone.
EZ_Zoogie
03-18-02, 12:34 PM
What does TTMWNMK mean, and what does maltheism mean? (Mal=Bad Theism=Religion?)
EZ_Kintire
03-19-02, 02:17 AM
sorry...
A Maltheism is a system where the supreme power or gods are evil.

Picked up Dagon on DVD through eBay. The DVD is a Brazilian release, and as such with only a marginal knowledge of Spanish the menus are essentially navigatable, but the DVD has original english audio, as well as at least english and spanish subtitles. Dunno about Spanish audio. Film was apparently released in 2001, no idea offhand when DVD was released, but it can be found on eBay.
Currently playing in a CoC game based in modern day. Gunsmithing/Drive are good skills for someone in the party to have. Silver bullets (or whatever), and the ability to get away in a hurry. In fact, using my car I t-boned an enemy's van over a concrete divider, and said van quickly exploded (Thank you natural 20s) Fun stuff.
I'll have to pass the Delta Green link on to my GM, thanks.
