View Full Version : BioShock Demo on Xbox Live Marketplace
Holy. ****ing. hell.
That was one of the most amazing gaming experiences I've ever had in my life.
Go. Download now. OMFG.
The Bioshock demo was snuck up onto Live last night at around eight my time. I hardly know what to say, and I can't say anything without diminishing your own experience. You need to make downloading this demo and playing it to completion your life's only purpose.
And for the PC users:
WHAT ABOUT A BIOSHOCK PC DEMO?
August 13, 2007
After the appearance of the BioShock Demo on Xbox 360™ last night, I’m sure many of you PC fans wondered, “What about us?”
Here’s the deal.
A BioShock PC Demo IS coming. We tried as hard as humanly possible to get it out to you guys simultaneously with the 360 demo, but we needed to make sure that it was perfect -- that all drivers were ready, and that the game looked great on a huge variety of computers.
Currently, the PC demo in its final stages of testing and approval. We are pushing to get it out to you as soon as possible. It will be out during the month of August, and everyone is working at full capacity to deliver it to you before the game hits store shelves on August 21st. I will also let you know as soon as I have an exact date for the demo's release, so please stay tuned.
I cannot express enough how sorry I am for the wait. Thank you for understanding and your patience. Just remember -- only eight days left till you get your hands on the full game.
I’ll let you know where to get the demo as soon as it becomes available.

Dammit, I had this pre-ordered and my 360 picked now to get the red ring of doom.

Holy ****ing ****! That was an awesome demo.....the graphics are great and the use of the sounds....damn if this doesn't score a 90%+ or better then damn....
You actually can use your brain too!
Edit: And I normally never get excited about an FPS/RPG game.....
Still trying to figure out what to play this on, 360 or computer hmmmm.
Ive been anticipating this for a while. So Im extremely happy that its both amazing and that I picked now to build a brand new computer. Just need to get a good gaming pad(sorry, but I SUCK at wasd) and Ill be good to go!
that reminds me, I never got around to beating System Shock 2.
that reminds me, I never got around to beating System Shock 2.
Same here :/
I'm just hoping it'll run well on my PC! And will it be moddable?
Ok i'm torn, first off I downloaded the demo on the 360 and it is just beautiful, its going to be an awesome game and sitting on the couch playing in a dark living room will be quite the trip. The problem is the controls are sloppy it seems, Its hard to do a fp game with a gamepad but recently with gears of war and graw it hasnt seemed to bad, they just felt loose for some reason. Enough to contimplate the pc version especially if mods come out for it.
But theres nothing like playing it on your moderatly sized hdtv of course ;)
You should be able to adjust the tightness of the screen pan and such in the options of any console FPS. Granted if you are used to WASD they will probably never feel the same, but they are adjustable.

Good reviews coming in for this game. 1UP.com gave it a perfect 10 and IGN gave it a 9.7, the highest rated Xbox 360 game yet.

I like Tycho of Penny Arcade's comment on the game:
It is my intention to secure two copies of the game, entire - one Collectors' edition, and one exclusively to shove up Roger Ebert's ass. If Bioshock isn't "art," then art is the poorer for it.
(for those who don't get the inference, film critic Roger Ebert has argued that games shouldn't receive first amendment protection like books, movies, and music because by their interactive nature, he doesn't believe that they can be art)

I too am torn between the PC and 360 version. On one hand most comps would prob die if they tried to do the 360 graphics. But then there is the PC where you lose graphics but have a little better control, moding etc.
So bah =/.

<derail>Your going to get much better graphics on a proper gaming PC than on a 360 any day. Which desn't contradict what you just said because your right most PC's are not gaming PC's. (Intigrated graphics FTL!) If you have a decent gaming PC though get the PC version. You don't have to spend a ton to get a killer gaming PC set up these days either.</derail>
Even if I had a 360 I would have gone with the PC version, I can't stand FPS games with a game pad. (or in other words I suck playing them that way and get scooled by 12 year olds) I am just happy they are releasing both at the same time.

Most PC gaming graphics cards now have HDTV out :)
I can't wait to try it out, but I'll have to get an HDTV first.

Well my 24" monitor is 1920x1200 resolution, and a decent video card will run that resolution with most of the bells and whistles with little difficulty. A 19" widescreen monitor will be 1440x900 (just under 1080 HD widescreen resolution) and a 20" widescreen will be approximately 1600x1000 all capable of being run off mid range video cards. You really can't compare good PC graphics to a console, the PC just totally obliterates it.
The thing consoles have going for them is they are “usually” less expensive than a gaming level PC and they have some titles exclusive for them at least for a short period of time. (think Gears of War for the 360 which is just now coming out for the PC) The price of a new consoles is starting to push into good gaming PC territory since you can have a pretty damn good gaming PC for $600-$800 now. However you have to consider with the PS3 you have a Blue Ray drive built in and that would definitely bust your budget on a PC right now. Give it a year though and Blue Ray drives will come down where even that might not be that big of an advantage.

Pc demo just absolutly blew me away. The demo stuttered 2 times during a couple of semi large battles, at 1920x1200 resolution, with settings at high.
System specs are Intel e6400 c2d, 2gb ram, 7900 Gt. I did not check framerate with fraps or anything, but it was pretty respectible.
There are some new drivers coming out for both ATI and nvidia with this game tommorw, ill try it again with fraps.
How long did the PC demo take to DL?
Took somewhere between four and six hours from Fileplanet (I wasn't really paying attention), but it's only a preload at the moment. Presumably until someone gets into the office in the morning and flips the switch.

Come to find out one of the stores in my area sold Bioshock a week early...AND ppl got it for 1/2 the price....
Just got done playing the PC version, damn, Im supprised I got as good of framerate out of it that I got. Demo was way too short http://smiliesftw.com/x/mad.gif Now I've got more wood for this game than I had before playing the demo. With just the few plasmids available I already think the system is awesome as hell. It is a goddamned shame that there is no multiplayer for this though, MP + Plasmids = Joygasm. I understand their reasoning for not having MP, but good Christ they need to go back now that the game is done and make a MP expansion or w/e for it.

What large battles? Is there more to this demo or something? Most splicers I saw on screen was two or three. But yeah, I've got a crappier rig than that and I could play it at 1280x1024 without touching any graphics settings (they were defaulted to high). The setup also said that there were known problems with my drivers, Im using tweaked ones, but I didn't notice anything wrong with it while I was playing it so /shrug. Oddly enough though, the subtitles didn't sync up properly for the splicer stuff, but did for the dude on the radio.
How long did the PC demo take to DL?
I got it from some site that was linked on OT in about 2.5 - 3 hours, was DLing it while I was raiding in EQ and when we finished up it only had about 15 minutes left on it. I got better speeds off it than the torrents or the FilePlanet download.
I... I was kind of underwhelmed, actually. Ayn Rand meets whoever it is who does survival horror, Art Deco Doom III. None of the RPG elements are in the demo, and that's what I'm most interested in. I really hope it opens up and gets away from the close quarters zombie hunting.
I'll probably buy it at some point, it's on Steam so it only takes like 45 seconds of weakness of my part to actually to do so. Maybe I'll wait and see how it does in the end-of-year awards.
So evidently the game does not support true widescreen FOV (SNWS language) :

Has anyone gotten their hands on the full PC game yet?
I'm curious if it's moddable or if I have to wait for yet another game to release before I can start modding w/ next-gen art (normal maps, spec maps, etc).
Crysis and the next UT are still a ways away I think :frown

I'd love to be playing Bioshock right now. But I got it through Steam, and I can't connect to the Steam network because they're fricking idiots.
I want my money back.
I've been connected to Steam for that past few hours, what seems to be the problem? I just finished playing the PC demo and was very happy that I was able to play with all setting maxed (Dx9 version) with my piddly little $700 system.
I was very impressed and I'm now looking forward to actually owning this game. My birthday is in a few weeks I will have to drop hints to the wife.

Why do all non-realistic shooters that come out recently have to be packed full of scary content? I didn't mind it in HL2 because it was one level and when I was done with it, I was done.
Maybe I'm a weakling, but after I've sweated and startled my way through a 30 minute session of zombie moans, attacks from behind and various horror movie twists just to finally reach that small safehouse - I just don't feel like going back out. I turn off the computer.

I'd have to agree, Ravenholm was not scary at all. Dunno how the rest of this game will be, but in the demo I didn't find anything to be scary.

I've been hearing similar, but before I buy it, it would be good to have a better gauge on it. What video card and how much RAM you using?
Can't run it on my comp :(

I have an8600GTS Graphics Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127287), 2 gigs of RAM, and a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo proc. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115014)
So not really bleeding edge by any stretch. I don't even have the processor over clocked though if I actually buy the game I will probably go ahead and do that.

I am quite a bit into the game. I love it.
For me I have c2d 6600, 8800gts, 2gb of ram and I have to run it at 1024x768 with everything turned on. I can run at max resolution but it stutters a bit on some of the wide open areas.
3.0ghz 9800xt 2gig runs it at 1680x1050 (max resolution for me) at full high settings without even a frame drop.
Bought it, installed it, and then allowed myself to get freaked out within 5 minutes. Stupid.....abiance and atmosphere!

That's pretty impressive for that card, isn't it?
I have an Athlon 64 4600+ dual core and just a measly 7600GS and 1GB of RAM yet I still think it'll be playable on my machine based on what I've read. Oh well, I just got a new job so I should be able to plop in another 3 gigs of RAM (for rendering, not gaming I tell myself) and a better video card. I want an 8800 chipset but I've read some bad things about nvidia's drivers for that chipset working well with 3d software (softimage xsi, 3dsmax).

Is this a game people will play more than once? I realize there are different playstyles to try out, but don't know how much of a factor that is.

It appears that BioShock could be coming to the PS3 as well:
http://forums.gametrailers.com/showthread.php?t=154798
Basically, in the PC demo if you go into the Content folder under the Bioshock folder, there's a file named ConfigINI.IBF and it contains something like the following:
[Console]
;; Console (XBox360, PS3) specific settings
;; StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit:
;; If this is a positive number, then instead of using the fixed per-level
;; limits, the StreamingDynamic resource will use as much memory as is
;; available as long as the total memory allocated by the game is less than
;; the specified number. In other words, StreamingDynamic will grow and
;; shrink to fit to the available memory instead of being locked to a fixed
;; budget
StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit=500
It could also just be that this is a standard Unreal Engine 3 settings file since that engine is cross platform. Maybe they just left it at default.

First, I couldn't connect to Steam at all. Then, when I could connect to Steam, the game that was supposed to be 100% pre-downloaded needed to download the last 30% again. After that, there was an error with authentication and the game would crash everytime I tried to start it. After that, it decided that the game was "not currently available, try again later" even though it was fully downloaded. After that it wouldn't let me delete the game files because, although I was connected to Steam, it kept telling me I needed an internet connection to delete my game files. After manually deleting them, it wouldn't let me download them again until I forced it to check the game files consistency and it realized they weren't there anymore.
Now I'm waiting for it to download again to try and find out if this time I'll get a download that works.
I certainly won't be buying anything else from Steam unless I absolutely have to.

That sounds like some sort of network issue. Do you have any software firewalls running that could be causing problems? How solid is your network connection? Any problems with that? Any DNS issues lately? (Unable to resolve web sites is one symptom)

Definitely not a network issue on my end. I have no problems using any other portion of Steam (HL2, Counterstrike Source, Dark Messiah). I think it's primarily a problem with the download.
I've uninstalled Steam and I'm downloading everything again. Maybe I'll be able to play it tonight.

I don't think it actually required a connection, I just think that the download and install was so completely hosed that it was popping up with random errors.
Maybe I've been lucky but I have yet to have a problem with Steam, and for the most part have been very happy with it. Now if I were playing games on a computer that didn't have constant internet connection I would feel differently. Maybe I just hate having to have a play disk constantly at hand than I hate having to always log onto one of their servers.

Reminds me of the scariest thing I ever had to play, and that was "The Cradle" in Thief 3. I'd often get to a point where I'd find myself a safe, dark little corner, and it took me forever to force myself to move. I just didn't ****ing wanna!
That's what's had me worries about Bioshock is that as awsome as it looks, it looks like a first-person survival horror game rather than a shooter. And if that's the case, I'm just not gonna like it.

It is survival horror. The game uses a lot of tricks with lighting, where lights will shut off and you'll hear the enemies rambling around you. It also uses a lot of ambient sound to create a really dark and scary atmosphere. On the plus side, you can usually hear enemies well before they pop out at you, but the downside is that doesn't make it any less creepy, especially because they're usually rambling with insanity.
All in all it's an amazing game, but if you don't like survival horror at all or can't stand to play the game, you probably won't like playing bioshock, even if you appreciate its quality.
I was a little disappointed at how "survival horror" the game is, as I don't normally like that, but if I play for a little while, I get less jumpy and have started to find myself not being as freaked out by the ambient sound, etc... Not sure if that will be the same for others.
Just got into Neptune's lobby or whatever it's called myself, right after the Medical Pavilion. Looking forward to what happens next

I spent all last night playing the Steamy version of Civ 4 without issue. I would much, much rather prove my identity with a network connection and a password than with a CD. Short of no authentication at all (and good luck with that one), Steam is a decent solution.
But bummer on the survival horror. It's not my bag either.
Nor is it mine.

Guys it kinda seems like that at first but you will not fully understand till way later in the game ;).
The game seems to be getting less survival horror the more I play, not sure if that pace will continue
I believe the game punished me for outsmarting it =(
I've made a habit of carrying around huge gasoline tanks or explosive barrels with telekinesis. I walked into the room in Fontaine's Fishery where Peach is behind the door. Apparently you're supposed to get into a fight with a hard splicer there that drops from the ceiling, but I saw the hole up there and just threw my barrel up...killing everything and bugging the encounter, which trapped me in the room. Time to start the level over from the auto save...grrrr

Question about Plasmids:
How deep is the Plasmid system? I just the second Plasmid, pyrokenisis, and it was like...given to me. I thought Plasmids were going to be kinda like D2s system. Youd get some ADAM, then youd use it to purchase the plasmid you want. Instead this seems more like collecting new weapons. Does the system get deeper?

Beat the game. Gameplay was fun, I found the plot a bit lacking in the beginning but it did get wrapped up fairly well towards the end. It's about 12 hours estimated with a good amount of exploring. I know I didn't miss too much when I finished. Only a few achievements off of perfect. I was just very disappointed in the plot, rather the lack thereof. I'll have to play through it again though, as the first run through I saved all of the sisters. There must be an alt. ending if you do the opposite. I'll drop a post back here when I'm done with that.
Man, people are throwing a **** fit over this PC activation limitation junk, and rightfully so. All this does it stall the people that are going to crack the game, meanwhile it ****s over people that actually paid for the game. If you pay for a game you should be able to play it on any number of computers with that CD key, doing this is no different than the old rumours of how PS3 games were going to have some DRM ******** on them that would make them unplayable on other systems. I find it really amusing when the XBox 2 version of the game doesn't have nearly the protection on it that the PC version does.
TeanninBramblefeet
08-24-07, 08:31 PM
While I regret to say it, I halfway agree with Top... on the other hand, no... no you should not be able to play it on any number of PCs just because you paid for it. Playing it on the PC implies installation of the game, which in turn implies that it can be played, through the use of No-CD cracks, on any number of PCs from one CD key.
I respect the company for wanting to protect the game from piracy without using some form of copy protection that destroys DVD burners. And yeah, not being able to install the game on more than a couple computers unless it's uninstalled from one is totally identical to the rumor that after playing a PS3 game on one system, it would NEVER be playable on another. And yes, it's truly hysterical that the version of the game produced in a medium that is by its very nature meant to be loaned to people, resold, traded in, and rented and cannot be pirated without making modifications to a console that render it useful for offline play only is not protected in such a fashion as to make it impossible to do just that. Right, go back to Off Topic.
By the way, how much longer on your download? Itching to play your pirated copy? (un)Righteously indignant over the fact that you had to wait for a pirate group to break the copy protection scheme so that you could join a swarm of people all wanting to play, beat, and never pay for a game that is truly worthy of supporting? Or could it be that you're having a fit because you paid for such a game, and feel cheated that you shelled out the cash for it now?
I respect the company for wanting to protect the game from piracy without using some form of copy protection that destroys DVD burners.
Er... what? Am I to understand that the consumer response here is/should be, "Oh it was this or use a scheme to destroy DVD burners? Ah well, ok then, I totally respect that you didn't want to destroy a consumer's property!"
That would be a bigger crime than pirating a game you were never going to pay for anyway. I don't think a corporation deserves "respect" for not doing something no one should be legally allowed to do in the first place. Destruction of someone's drive is a bigger crime than pirating a game. Destruction of a property is demonstrable damage. Piracy of a game is not.
I'm not making an argument for pirates or piracy in general, but any form of copy protection that in the end only causes real problems to actual paying consumers is complete ********.

I'm just sayin' that I'll take a limited number of PCs I can install a game on over that joke of a copy-protection scheme "Starforce," which was a) causing DVD and CD burners to malfunction when a customer who paid for a game that used Starforce to protect it, and b) causing absolutely ZERO delays for the pirating community in circumventing the copy protection...

I already paid for my copy, I got tired of waiting.
I already paid for my copy, I got tired of waiting.
You ever laugh so hard you have to stop yourself so you don't pass out? :rofl I believe you and thats why this whole situation is so funny :b
Well, usually when my paid version of a game doesn't work what I do is go to certain pirating places and find a version that will patch my legally purchased copy to become playable from it's unplayable out-of-the-box state. The pirates usually have better technical support as well for any problems that might arise, which is funny since I'm not paying them like I am those other guys. So as far as I'm concerned the people putting this copy protection BS that's doing this can suck my ..... and further more are more than welcome to eat my .... ......
I know, it's silly for me to expect that a game I've legally paid for should work better for me than it does for the guy who didn't buy it.

I legally purchase all of my games, but that doesn't mean I'm not hitting gamecopyworld for the no cd/dvd .exe.
Just got to my first Little Sister/Big Daddy fight and quickly got my butt handed to me. I had what I now consider the wrong Plasmids equipped, so I may go back to older save file and play from there. Was still fun though.
Finished it today, i spent more time on the first play through closer to 20 hours, but alot of it was just messing around trying out tricks and variations in combat on the splicers and big daddies.
Overall a very good game, although not in the same catagory as systemshock 2 or deus ex. Even though its set up as an arcade style FPS, bioshock for me at least is the best FPS to come out since Riddik in 2004-2005.
The game definitely has lost a lot of its survival horror feel for me, and I think i'm getting close to the end.
I think it's because they use a lot of the same tricks, like turning off the lights but nothing happening until the lights come back on, maybe that will change again.
Also, it feels like the big daddy fights are getting much less challenging. The poor bouncers are pushovers once you have the crossbow and some trap bolts...
-Slathe
I just did my second Big Daddy fight and once again got my butt handed to me. What sucked more was that he was at half health from dealing with a gernade throwing slicer. Oh well....

First Big Daddy fight:
I kind of felt like I cheated. I had earlier hacked two turrets, one of them was behind a hole in the wall. The other was in the middle of the room. I ran between them and as soon as he got hit by the guns he went off on them. He crushed the first one but could not get through to the one in the room with the hole in the wall. So my first fight was cake... a little exploitive but I definately didnt set it up that way. I just like taking over all the sentry guns for all the help i can get!
Biggwin, things like that are actually what you are supposed to do. So that wasnt cheating at all.

Later Big Daddy Fights-
Chemical Thrower + Conservation Weapon Mod + Electric Gel + Electric Skin Enhancement = 1 dead Big Daddy that doesn't even have a chance to move, and you don't even have to reload

Anyone know if there is a 3rd ending?
Inquiring minds want to know: does the game end up being a critique on Ayn Rand's Objectivism, or is that sort of just a disposable part of the setting?

It's about as much a criticism on Objectivism as Communism is on Marxism.
In other words, the systems may sound good on paper, but people screw em up.
I love Ryan's speech at the beginning. Heck, I love most of his speeches. A man CHOOSES!

MAD spoilers yo.
So like, I like the effort they went to to make you feel like a big daddy, the helm, the footsteps, the noises you make when you get hit. However, they left out one big ****ing detail, your arms still look the same. The suit doesn't give you a look that is any different. This is a big problem that I had with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the eleventy different suits you could use.

I made the mistake of getting the helmet first. Going forward, the helmet will always be last.
That said, I agree. I also hate my lack of feet, legs, etc. Too many games leave those out.

I am kind of glad I didn't have the big goofy gloves, my view was obscured enough by the stupid helmet, i couldn't imagine how bad it would be if I had huge big daddy hands as well. I also wasn't a big fan of the stomping the boots made, it was a cool effect, but overall I felt like it was giving away my position to the splicers, even if it wasn't

Not creepy to me, but I choose not to harvest 'em, I rescue and I believe it's the best path overall. Even if the adam rewards aren't instant, it pays off in time and not just storywise.

I prefer to take pics of both the little sisters and big daddies before I attack them to get the multiple mob bonus and if I 'level up' just before the fight it makes the fight that much easier.
Another one is aggroing a mob and repeatedly taking pics of him as he charges. You get an 'action shot' bonus and might level up before his picture isn't worth taking any more. I then switch to the freeze plasmid and retreat, then set up my weapon.

I've already beat the game saving em all. I'm going the other way now.
So my virus scanner this morning told me that BioShock.exe is a virus and uninstalled it without giving me the chance to tell it no. Now Im having issues reinstalling it. POS virus scanner.
AVG is having an issue with BioShock. Updating it should correct the error.
Yeah, found that out after calling their tech support. Glad it was an easy fix, even though it was a hassle. Now I can spend my 4 day weekend finally finishing the game so I can read all the spoilers.
Y'know, even though in your case that was a bug there have been games that were so bad I wish my virus protection had just said no and uninstalled them for me. That would be a great feature if it could just weed out the hideously buggy and crappy games.

K, AVG free, no issues here with BioShock.
As to the 2 installations thing, it is 5 now. Also they are releasing a program to run on the computer to "de-authorize" the install so it doesn't take away from the 5 installs.
Awesome game, playing through it again gonna harvest instead of rescue.

About the choice to harvest or save:
I wish they had made this choice more meaningful. It could have played a huge role in the whole section of the game after you meet andrew ryan, but instead it has almost no effect on the entire game, which is kind of sad. It doesn't even make sense that the little sisters help you at the end if you harvest them (or that you'd have to trick them to help you if you've been their savior by dressing up as a big daddy). That was probably my biggest disappointment with the game
Sounds like Earthlink's virus scanner. It constantly deleted my NWN models file.
Koru, are you saying that you think BioShock is buggy and crappy? Or just saying you wish there was a scanner that would not let you install ones that are?
Not saying a bad thing about bioshock, just saying there's other games that in retrospect I wish my virus protection had had the good sense to just veto.
Ah, then yes, I totally agree.

I was a bit disapointed with killing the guy in charge of the weird picture montage, the reward was really lacking (it was a plasmid, don't remember which but was not all that happy with it)

By the looks of these results (http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/bioshock_mainstream_gpu_performance/page9.asp), you should probably expect to run at 1024x768 with medium settings.

Hmm, im not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Im really enjoying the game and the storyline, but like I said, Im running short on all my supplies. On top of that Im getting a bit freaked out at times:
In forget exactly where I was, but I was in Fort Frolic, and I walked in to a room and saw six "statues". I examined them, like I literally went up to them and checked them out. Then I went further in to the room and scavanged around. Well leaving the room and....the 6 statues are gone. "Ohhh, thats not gonna be good". So then I head downstairs in to this room thats wide open, but flooded. In the corner theres a safe. So I go, hack the safe and loot it. Turn around and theres one of the statues just standing there. Yeah, TOTALLY freaked me out, so I shot it to heck. Taught me real fast to not trust the statues. But this led me to also wonder, what the heck is with the statues? I kept checking the audio-diaries for some kind of hint as to how they became statues, but none I came across said anything. Anyone know? I assume Cohen has something to do with it.

Possible big spoiler for any sequal-
Andrew Ryan is still alive, or at least he certainly should be.
I was looking through the archives of the messages and noticed this:
Suchong - The Vita Chamber
Initial Deployment, Vita Chamber/Client Ryan Industries Stage one is complete. Sinclair and Alexander tried to explain the science to me, but Suchong does not believe them. They keep saying plasmid reconstruction this and quantum entanglement that, and then poof, dead people come back to life. ********! Of course, Ryan will only allow it to be tunes to his genetic frequencies for the testing...
So technically the same Vita Chambers that have been returning you to life throughout the game would also do the same when Ryan died.
This review made me LOL *SPOILERS/SNWS language* http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/1394-Zero-Punctuation-BioShock
I need to play System Shock 2 it seems http://smiliesftw.com/x/redface.gif
I just picked it up today.
It's really struggling on my system, even though I got an extra Gig of RAM and installed it on a new, fast hard drive. Even on 800x600 with medium/high settings but global lighting enabled and shadow maps disabled, the most I can get are 40 fps. And the normal fight FPS is probably more like 20. I followed the tweakguide on it as well.
I feel like my system should be able to handle more than this on the Unreal3 engine - I'm hoping some patches or better drivers might optimize something, but I'm not that hopeful.
Guess I'll have to upgrade yet another component next week :b

This is something that Ive been wondering...
Who are the Big Daddies? I mean, are we supposed to know who Ryan found to be them? Thats the biggest thing Ive been wondering. I'd assume it's poor people from Fontaine's soup kitchens.
That's where Fontaine got most of his slicer army, and after his "death", it would be a logical place for Ryan to get "volunteers". Of course, it's also possible that Ryan used captured Fontaine peoples.
Even though I've had to basically turn down all graphics settings to play the game at 800x600 on a 7600GS, I've still really been enjoying it.
I've been taking ridiculous amounts of pics trying to get research improvements for everything I can. I like that it has that extra element.
My main complaint(s) with the game is that there aren't any other type of mutants other than humanoids (no animals got experimented on?) and the setting prevents huge outdoor areas... and everything indoors gets kinda old for me, probably why I could never beat Doom3.
Still a great game, and would definitely recommend it, though.

Apparently they had a Zoo level that never got put in the game. They were talking about using it in a future Bioshock product.
There are so many modes of entertainment that we take for granted in modern society that could have been put in but werent. A Zoo level would have been awesome, and maybe an amusement park.

I demand Bioshock movie with a $100 million+ budget and no *** in sight.
I dunno... a movie where every 5 steps we have to listen to an audio diary, where the main character does unimaginable things to little girls in the dark, and where every time he comes across a machine he fixes the plumbing?
Large budgets do not a good movie make.
Would you kindly not suggest that again?

I'd actually like to see a prequel (in either game or movie form; preferrably game form). A movie would show the war between Ryan and Fontaine, and a game would insert you into the war to either prevent or cause the catastrophe that awaits for the original game. Or maybe the catastrophe is fated to happen, and it's a matter of you playing both sides against each other to get out before the collapse.

Okay, I just beat this thing yesterday.
Let me start out by saying that, because I hate scary games and I knew this game was scary, I went out of my way to take precautions against the scaryness.
I played on easy. I looked up non-spoiler faqs about the upgrades so I wasn't wasting my resources on ineffective powers. I used saving anywhere like I had OCD. And I got all my camera research done as soon as possible.
So my experience:It's a great game. There's no doubt about that. The fear factor wasn't too bad. It was pretty bad in the first level, the medical pavilion just because you're so weak, and also crazy doctors and nurses are pretty ****ing scary. After that it wasn't too bad till Fort Frolic which is just unnerving with the statues.
The Big Daddies were, if anything, comforting to have around. It always made you feel like badguys wouldn't want to start **** with him around, and he never attacks you unless you **** with him.
And they weren't hard to kill. I know I played on easy, but I never had a Big Daddy fight last more than 15 seconds and cost me more than a bar of health. It was just a matter of walking up behind them, shocking them, and unloading with the shotgun.
Basically, all my focus on my powers went into upgrading lightning bolt, any stealth related powers, and any wrench related powers. This took alot of the scary out of the game.
I basically became crazykillgod with the wrench, especially with the research damage upgrades. I could kill everything but big daddies and bosses in one swing. Especially with the shocking-back field. I'd get jumped by a bunch of guys, turn around and swing my mighty wrench and splatter them all over the wall. And if something got behind me they usually just ended up electrocuted for getting to me.
And because I almost never used my guns, the other big worry of survival horror, running out of ammo, was never an issue.
And the last big thing, being ambushed, was essentially negated by the camo skin. Since I knew you almost always get adds spawning behind you whenever you picked up an upgrade or a diary, I'd just hold still before touching it. When I grab it, the ambushers would pop outside all agro, but then they'd come in the room and just not be able to see me. They'd just walk around till one got too close and then splat. Or they'd start walking away and I'd hit one in the back with the crossbow. The camo works on robots too, so if I ever triggered an alarm, or the couple times you automatically trigger one, you just stop moving till the alarm timer goes off. The bots fly around but never see you.
I basically made myself into the kind of scary, unseen, insta-killing predator that the badguys were supposed to be scary for being.
I do wanna thank those in the thread who mentioned the 2 biggest "scares" and so I was prepared for them. The dentists office, and the room with the 6 statues. The dentist office was still scary because I wasn't prepared for the being blinded part. In both instances though it was a matter of, as soon as I could see, I spun around and splattered the guy all over the wall.
I do love the setting and the themes presented in the game. Its not about "this is what would happen if you tried an Objectivist society". It's "this is what happens if you try and Objectivist society and then decided to abandon those ideals mid-stream".
The story was good. I loved the big twist moment. Although the ending was kinda short and unsatisfying(I cured the little sisters).
But overall, yeah, great game! I hope the next thing they do is just as good and not survival horrorish. Someone needs to make another Deus Ex game.Oh, for anyone else thats beat it and just wants the plot explained chronologically, or to see little bits you might not have caught or whatever I thought http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/file/931329/50049 was a great guide.
I just got to bump this to say how great this game runs and looks with my new x1950XT I got off of ebay (only $150, too).
Does anyone know if this game will be moddable when UT comes out (along with all their tools)?
