It has a pretty easy learning curve. After a few games you'll start to figure out what's going on.

I also find that the team also dictates how well you preform. You could be the best in the world but if you have shitty ppl vs. ppl whom know the drill your boned.

I agree. Take Fort2 for instance. There is no way you can play a Sniper on that map if you don't have someone taking out the Demos that hang out on the ground launching grenade up at you.

Yeah your team make a huge difference in how fun it is. With a good team, even losing is fun, but a really bad team, ugh.

I think its also a matter of finding the class that really fits you best. So far I've played everything except spy at least once. I generally have the most fun with a Pyro or Soldier. Engineers can be frustrating when spy's keep sapping your sentry guns and dispensers. Heavies can be fun too, but moving so slow can be frustrating at times. Medics are good if you like support classes, the uber charge is one of the most powerful things in the game. Scouts are fast but drop really fast, good ones are really hard to hit though with their double jump. Demo men are fun too, getting someone with a sticky bomb makes me giggle lol. I blow at being a sniper, headshots are devastating but hard for me to pull off.

I've enjoyed all the maps, but vastly prefer control point games over CTF. Playing to the default 4 captures can lead to really long boring games. My favorite map so far is Hydro, the various zones and fast pace are really a blast.

The game needs better new maps.

Badlands feels too large.
Well CTF feels too large.
Granary spawn time needs to be fixed. Once the middle cp is locked down, it's extremely hard to contest it for the losing side due to the travel distance. Well CP is just right.

Spy is my most played class, naturally.

I like the Sniper. There is something about point and click death that appeals to me. The pyro appeals to the psychopath in me. It's fun setting people on fire. I like Heavies quite a bit too. Though I agree that their movement can be annoying at times.

Pfft, everyone knows the proper way to play 2fort is for the entire team to be Engineers and to set up a sentry gun farm in the intel room! :)

Valve had a nice little gathering of souls last night at Blondie's Bar and No Grill here in SF to show of the new Team Fortress 2 map, Goldrush. If you are reading this, you are probably a big Team Fortress 2 fan, so I'll skip explanations of the game and dive right into the details.

First of all, I loved the look of it. The name certainly describes what the map was like, looking like something out of Disney's Big Thunder Mountain railroad ride. Lots of wooden structures, water towers and mine car tracks. But the map isn't just a new area, it also features a new gameplay type called Payload. Basically how it works is this: the map has three separate areas and players are split into offensive and defensive teams. The goal of the offensive team is to push a mine cart loaded with explosives through the map, capturing the defensive team's bases as they go. The cart moves faster depending on how many people are surrounding it and leaving it unattended will cause it to start rolling back towards the beginning again. The other team of course, tries to stop the payload from reaching it's goal.

The map wasn't the only thing going however. We were also privy to the new item system that will be instituted with the next update. This also ties in with the thirty six new achievements for the Medic class. By gathering some or all of the new achievements, you can gain three new unique items. One third of the achievements will net you The Blutauger, a new syringe gun. This weapon does not give critical damage, but instead sucks health from the enemy on impact. Earn two thirds of the achievements and you will get The Critzcrieg, a new medigun that will rapid fire critical rockets. Getting all the achievements will see you receiving The Ubersaw which takes melee combat damage and converts it into Ubercharge. Four direct hits with it will charge up whatever Medigun your Medic has currently equipped.

Team Fortress fans are going to have a field day with this new map and if you want to get all those new weapons (and I know you do) take a gander at all 36 achievements after the jump!

First Do No Harm: Play a full round without killing any enemies and score the highest on a team of 6 or more players.
Quadruple Bypass: Heal a teammate who's taking fire from 4 enemies at once.
Group Health: Work with 2 other medics to deploy 3 simultaneous uber-charges.
Surgical Prep: Have an uber-charge ready before the setup phase ends.
Trauma Queen: Deploy 3 uber-charges in less than 5 minutes, and assist in 5 kills during that time.
Double Blind Trial: Deploy an uber-charge within 8 seconds of a nearby enemy medic deploying his.
Play Doctor: In a team with no medics, be first to switch to medic after a teammate calls "Medic!" and then heal 500 health.
Triage: Deploy an uber-charge on a teammate less than a second before they're hit by a critical explosive.
Preventive Medicine: Block the enemy from capturing a control point with an uber-charged teammate.
Consultation: Assist a fellow medic in killing 5 enemies in a single life.
Does It Hurt When I Do This?: Kill 50 scouts with your syringe gun.
Peer Review: Kill 50 medics with your bone saw.
Big Pharma: Assist a heavy in killing 30 enemies where neither of you die.
You'll Feel A Little Prick: Assist in killing 4 enemies with single uber-charge on a scout.
Autoclave: Assist in burning 8 enemies with a single uber-charge on a pyro.
Blast Assist: Assist in exploding 5 enemies with a single uber-charge on a soldier.
Blunt Trauma: Assist in punching out 4 enemies with a single uber-charge on a heavy.
Medical Breakthrough: Assist in destroying 8 enemy engineer buildings with a single uber-charge on a Demoman.
Midwife Crisis: Heal an engineer as he repairs his sentry while it's under enemy fire.
Ubi Concordia, IBI Victoria: Assist in killing 5 enemies on an enemy control point, in a single life.
Grand Rounds: Heal 200 teammates after they've called for "Medic!"
Infernal Medicine: Extinguish 100 burning teammates.
Doctor Assisted Homicide: Assist in killing 20 nemesis.
Placebo Effect: Kill 5 enemies in a single life while having your uber-charge ready, but undeployed.
Sawbones: Hit enemies with your bonesaw 10 times in arrow without dying or missing.
Intern: Accumulate 7000 heal points in a single life.
Specialist: Accumulate 10000 heal points health in a single life.
Chief of Staff: Accumulate 10 million total heal points.
Hypocritical Oath: Kill an enemy spy that you have been healing.
Medical Prevention: Save a falling teammate from dying on impact.
Second Opinion: Uber-Charge 2 teammates at once.
Autopsy Report: Provide an enemy with a freezecam shot of you taunting above their ragdoll.
FYI I Am A Medic: Use your bonesaw to kill 5 enemy spies who have been calling for "Medic!"
Family Practice: Uber-charge ten of your steam community friends.
House Call: Join a game that one of your friends is in and then deploy and uber-charge on him.
Bedside Manner: Be healing a teammate as he achieves an achievement of his own.

Some of these are going to be so ****ing difficult / next to impossible to do. There's gonna be a lot of private server crap going on so people can get these next to impossible ones completed.

Why not? Your sentry should be able to take them out with no trouble. It's what I hate about playing the scout, they have absolutely no defense against sentries. I hope to god they give some of the classes grenades as new weapons like the medic stuff or something, because scouts and pryos need them badly.

If the engie doesn't put their gun in a corner or against the wall you can circle strafe it to death on a scout or pyro. Much easier on the pyro, but Ive seen scout take down guns with a baseball bat a couple times. Course its a perfect condition scenario for them, pyro has advantage of roasting the engie while doing it.

Err, i meant 1v1 when I wander away from my sentry to go see what havoc I can raise.

A lone engy is no prob for a scout.

And Ponzi, you need to get Frogger_beta (this would be one of those maps) added to that server. Yes, Frogger as in that kind of Frogger, the map is set up and played like a game of Frogger.

Hey Lenilya, what was the problem with your mic? I thought I had mine working but noone can hear me and I cant seem to get it to respond in the Steam mic test. Really driving me nuts.

I've been playing mostly on servers run by [TnA], mainly the east coast 24/7 2-fort server. My favorite map is Hydro but everyone else seems to hate the map, so its hard to find it up on a server.

I spend most of my time as either a Engi or a Soldier, depending on what the team needs. I loves me some crit rockets hehe. And one thing to know, as an engi, you can hit the other teams battlements with your shotgun. Its not accurate, but I've taken out enemy snipers that way when they werent paying attention. You can also take out scouts as they try to run the bridge roof. The shotgun is actually my favorite weapon. Good distance, nice spread and deadly at real close range.

Oh, my mic problem was actually my sound card/vista/steam/tf2 not playing well together. Running Vista (with sound controls) and steam in the background (with it's own set of sound controls) with TF2 in the foreground (with it's own set of controls) makes the drivers go crazy.

Had to dig into the sound controls and disable all but one output, make that the priority, sacrifice a chicken, do a little dance, ect. Even now, the controls in tf2/steam don't do anything, and my mic is superquiet- i literally have to hold it next to my lips to be heard. but hey- it works.

I actually got my most points ever over the weekend, and not as engy for once. Even tho i suck at sniper, this weekend was headshots-r-us. then i went back to engy on the next map, and was the bane of all the spies- it was like I'd turn a corner, and there'd be a spy trying to cloak. Shotgun to the FACE. Got the same spy 4 times in a row. Was awesome payback for all the sentries I've ever had sapped.

I fully expect to play tonight and suck horribly to make up for it. Maybe I'll be spy. I am the worst spy EVER! I just cant do the whole 'keyboard shortcuts to swap between all the **** before i get killed standing there scrolling thru wtf I'm trying to do'.

Enable quick weapon switching in the options menu. Also, select the sapper, then the knife, so that you can switch between the two with the Q key. If you're quick, you can stab then sap, using Q to switch to the sapper and get the sentry before it can turn around

I can help if you need some practice, just IM me through Steam.

Mouse2 toggles the cloak. Theres about a second delay before it engages/disengages. There's a little cloak meter in the bottom right corner that shows how long your cloak will last, it recharges over time.

You can hit the B key to immediately put on your last disguise. I know there are a few scripts that can make the numpad choose your disguise, although I've never used them; I just hit the 4 key then the number for the class I want to disguise as. I've played it enough that I remember which class is on each number.

(place a porter entrance, then a dispenser in front of it. climb on the dispenser from the porter, and put an exit on the ledge you can now reach)

Yeah, Best In Class can help you learn stuff like that. Till I played that map, I never really noticed / paid attention engineers doing that.

I might not be the best spy player in the world, but I've found a lot of your success has to do with the competition (probably true in all cases, but far more so with the spy). There are some players that are on constant spy watch and others that are just completely oblivious.

I've also learned that a pyro is pretty much a spy's worst enemy. Someone can shoot at you and think they might've missed or that you're not a spy, but it's pretty obvious with a pyro hits you. I've just started doing my best to avoid them if possible.

Yep, I'm the paranoid pyro, everyone get a puff of flame, and groups get a nice gout. Hell last night I fired into a pack near a door and 2 of the 4 were spies.

Well apparently Nvidia had installed some sort of sound software which was borking my Audigy card, so now that its fixed my mic works. Now if I just wouldnt get those damn lock up/sound loop crashes. Went to the Valve help section and there are like 8 things that can cause it. I see much frustration and troubleshooting in my weekend.

I'm one of those folks who is always looking for spies. I shoot everyone. Coming up the sewers alone? I shoot you. Coming into the base? I shoot you. Go near my sentry? I shoot you. Standing in a corner not doing anything? I shoot you a few times to either kill you or wake you up. get moving!

Better safe than backstabbed.

The new PL mode and maps are a lot of fun. Every class is utilized too. I pull off mad multiple backstabs when contesting the cart.

There are so many medics now too; 4-6 which actually hurts the team. I play mostly on a class restricted server so maxed at 3 medics it's not as bad when its a full 12 vs 12. The achievements are a blast too. More combat medics trying to bone everyone.

Most teams have 4-6 medics now, making it really really hard to actually play the game normally. What's really annoying is that none of them want to actually heal you. You'd think that nobody calling for a medic would go without one, but they're all too busy chasing after people with their bonesaws out. Hopefully in a few days things will start to settle down.

Valve should really release updated weapons and achievements for all classes in one bundle. It seems people are annoyed by too many bad medics. Although like I said, my fav server is still fun by restricting the classes.

They did the medic first on purpose, since not enough people were playing it. Plus, knowing Valve's release schedule, if they had to do all of them at once it would only get released around 2010.

Yep. I thought with this update I wouldn't have to play Medic so much since there would be more. Well, now there are more Medics, but they're all doing stupid things to get achievements. We had one map where a couple of the Medics were just hanging back and using ubers on each other. (Then again, I did get 2 captures on 2Fort in a relatively short time due to the competition having no sentries up.)

I hope next time they do a weapon update, they include at least 1/3 of the remaining classes, just so you don't have so many people flocking to one particular class, making it hard to win anything. Of course, it also might not be as big of a deal if people are messing around on a class that isn't one of the biggest support roles in the game.

Yeah, but if they did that we minus well just wait for TF3. Unless they've already been working on them, I expect it's gonna be a long ass time before we see more of the classes get new weapons.

As for the map, first two sections seemed easy, last one was the chokepoint. I think I enjoyed the seven point escort map (if anyone plays custom maps, there's already several escort maps out) that I played the other day, the map is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge and had like a ~45 minute time limit and spawn points that creeped up as you capped points. Only thing Ive noticed that's different with these escort maps is that the escort item doesn't heal you if you are the attacker or move backwards if no attacker is up on the item.

Fairly big spoiler which truly does spoil some things.

Oh and "achievement_unlock_all" apparently still works and will unlock the medic stuff. I forsee a lot of people doing it since some of these are just ****ing insane. Some guy mentioned that he has a friend with 80 hours on medic and has still only healed ~3.2M.

Edit: http://forum.osnn.net/showthread.php?p=829511#post829511 for names of individual achievements, "reset" instead of "unlock" can be used to reset them if you want to test stuff.

April 30, 2008 - Team Fortress 2 Update Released

Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Team Fortress 2 Client


Removed TF2 achievement console commands



Team Fortress 2 Server


Fixed clients being able to trigger sv_soundscape_printdebuginfo on the server

Fixed potential "nuke" exploit in rcon subsystem


Hopefully they reset the achievements of any **** that did that.

I didn't have any, unless there were some old ones, but I've already got 10 of them done, including Triage which I figured would be a bitch to do without some sort of setup. Some guy already had 2/3s of them done when they went live since medic is pretty much the only thing he played and he had 80 hours on it and still wasn't close to the 10M heal one. **** that thing is gonna be a bitch to complete.

Valve has said a couple times that now the new weapon/achievement system is in place that they will be rolling out the rest of the classes "pretty quickly" so we'll see what that actually means in the coming months I guess.

Imo, they should have released a 2nd set at the same time, and then release them in pairs. Medic and Heavy, Engineer (next I've heard) and Demo, either complimentary or balancing.

so many sucky medics out right now, the winning team is usually the one with fewer medics. I was trying out goldrush and was able to get behind the car and burned 7 medics in a row, all running around with bonesaws or trying to heal each other.

We had one guy on the server last night who is like 4 away from the 36. Not my style, I want to play my normal way and then let them unlock when they do, not grind them out and then be bummed there is nothing new to do.

Also, I really don't understand the scoring system sometimes. I've had a high of 34 points from engineer and hated that because it was so easy to do, just sit there and bang wrench. So last night I went the entire 3rd part of dustbowl without dying, killed 21 people and got...23 pts. My high on scout is 9 pts, you sneeze wrong and your head explodes.

Valve has said a couple times that now the new weapon/achievement system is in place that they will be rolling out the rest of the classes "pretty quickly" so we'll see what that actually means in the coming months I guess.

They changed the 10 million to 1 million for that achievement. That one, and the two for healing a large amount in one life were both given to me the first time I played medic after the patch. I was the guy who would always switch to medic if the team needed one, and it's nice that all my work gave me a head start.

The other night, I did two captures in 2fort within 10 minutes... with a pyro. They didn't have a single sentry up, and I didn't pass a single person going to the intel from the sewer, and this was on a server with a 32 person limit.

There's a lovely 'instant healing' glitch with the medic's new needle gun. No idea how it works, but it may have something to do with weapon swapping at the correct time (most likely uber), and shooting anything with the leech needle gun. Every hit gives them 100% health, making them nigh-impossible to kill. Had one sit in front of my level 3 sentry and needle it to death.

Yeah, medics that already unlocked ubersaw are bad enough, but when two of them are on the same team, they both can **** off. It was a really bad idea to have the Ubersaw charge up ubercharge.

Yeah, that makes it a little harder. Although, if you can spot the snipers and just fire in their direction, I've found they're more concerned with avoiding being shot than doing the shooting (in some cases).

Thats because a lot of them are TDM playstyle point whores. They don' care if the team wins or loses as long as they are #1 on the board. They fact that they get 2pts per headshot kill doesn't help this.

TDM=Team Death Match. They go in and see who can rack up the top score. They will play sniper on a ctf map and stay up in their perch instead of protecting or stealing the flag. I love them on 2fort, I will burn them again and again until they respond in one of a couple ways: 1)Switch class to kill me, in which case I win 2) Get a friend to bodyguard them-again I win, they have dragged even more people away from the map focus or 3)they get mad, yell a few profanities and leave-again a win. Best time was when 4 of them were up there with a soldier and engie bodyguarding them. We left 2 on defense, took the other 10 into their base and cleaned the floor with the 3 poor bastards trying to defend while their other 3 got chewed up by our defenders.

Pyros really should get assist points for this stuff. Softening up a push by the opposing team to be more easily mopped up by others should be worth something.

Then again, I've always like pyros. I used to make it my personal goal in QWTF to set the entire level on fire. :)

Well, you do get asisst points if you light someone on fire and a teammate finishes them off. (I don't know how it works if you die before they do.) But yeah, I know a lot of people complain about pyros being weak. I guess part of it is having to be close in range to attack, but having so little defense. I'll be curious to see what kind of weapon upgrades they get.

I believe the pyro will still get the assist if they die before the person they set on fire. At least thats how it seems to work with HLstats.

The snipers I was up against the other night didnt care if I shot at them hehe. Besides if one moved there were the other two to pop me in the noggin.

Had an awesome set of matches on goldrush last night. The other team stopped us at the very last control point twice, real intense finishes. But on the good side when they were on offense, they only made it out of the first section once. And we even managed to keep them from getting the very first CP once. That should be an achievement, they didnt even get the cart half way. Its such a defense stacked map, you really have to be on the ball or the defense has to royally suck to make good headway.

At least the medic achievement whorage seems to be letting up some. I really wish they had released the upgrades in batches of three though. Ideally it should have been one offensive, one defensive and one support class. At least spread it out so a team could have functioned a bit better.

The medidemic has certainly died down. Although its annoying that some people who cheated for the unlocks still have their weapons. I've gotten 27 of the medic achievements but I don't foresee myself unlocking the ubersaw. The nice thing about the medic achievements is that rarely will there be 0 medics on the team now.

Once you get the critzkrieg some of the weird ones become more possible like the scout 3 kills etc. The only one i think has to be artificially done is the 20 kills on a heavy with neither dying. Should have been 10, 20 is just too outlandish for most servers. If I see someone doing that well, I'm gonna damn well make sure one of them dies.

Yeah, I was pretty happy looking at the pyro list. Nothing looks too out of the ordinary and most of the achievements could be unlocked just playing normally. It's also nice to not have to rely on other people for them. (I just can't seem to get a demo to blow up 5 buildings for me. Closest I've gotten is four. :( )

I also like how some of the new achievements require the new weapons. I was really surprised that there weren't any like that with the medic achievements. The Kritzkreig really added a lot of possibilities and might've encouraged its use more.

I wouldn't think it's overly hard, but I notice a lot of demos are mainly concerned with getting the sentry and then going after players. It's sort of strange considering leaving the dispensor and teleporters up just means it's all that much faster that the engineer will have a fully functioning sentry back up. Unfortunately, I don't have a mic so I can tell them what to do yet.

I havent played in a month or so, but I'm really itching to get back in. Thank god the family is going off to visit relatives for a few weeks without me!

So are the servers one big flame fest now? I really cant wait till all the new sets are out so things can get back to normal.

And what are the two new fan made maps like? Did they put them into the regular roation on servers?

Well stayed up later than I should but down to needing 9 of the achievements. Cooked Books seems bugged since I know I've burned a ton of intel runners and am stuck on 3/5. Combine Fire is going to be hard until the pyro pop drops off (its just swarms of bad pyros dying 2-3 at a time).

Rest to go are Pyrotechnics, Firefighter/Chief (for 375 kills into them last night), Attention Getter (need to work on my flare gun aim a lot), Controlled Burn (enemies pushing their cart count, so this should go fast), Pyromancer (80k in, 920k damage to go), and Hot Potato (81 of 100 reflect including 4 soldiers killed by rocket, 2 mass kills by reflected crit rocket, and 1 demo I bounced a crit sticky back and who kindly detonated himself for unknown reasons)

Opinions of the weapons so far:

Flare gun has amazing range, and if you figure aiming it fast it makes engies and snipers have to move around a lot more. Also since it sets people on fire, 2 man pyro teams of flare and axestinguisher work great.

Backburner is AMAZING when you have a map that is conducing to back attacks. We were playing Warpath, I jumped below the middle bridge, run thrugh the tunnels and came back up and behind blue team at they were capping. Roasted like 7 peeps including 2 medics and 2 heavies before they even knew I was there. The extra life is also nice, but the lack of the compresses air hurts as I get used to using it.

Axestinguisher is also pretty cool, but with so many pyros playing right now, its hard to light someone on fire and use it.

The new compressed air gun alt fire is my favorite part of the patch though. Its amazing. Someone up on your grill? Light and send them 10ft away. Soldier shooting rockets downa long hall? Reflect them back or even more fun, attack from side and make him fire into a wall. Great for antipyro (used this to keep the 3 man idiot packs off me), and especially fun to use to make feet leave ground so that sentry guns roofbox people.

Great, great patch, only thing missing is fixing it so that soldier and demo suicides still count as kills when on fire.

CP Fastlane is a great map, imho. I played it quite a bit before the patch, good to see it getting some love.

I can't really recall CTF Turbine ATM. I'll need to go hop on it and see if I've played it before.

I totally didnt see that you didnt need ALL of the achievements for the Pyro, unlike the Medic. I still want to try and finish them off just so I am only left with "Friends Like These" again since I can never find seven friends on all at the same time, let alone playing on remotely the same severs.

Edit: Im really kicking myself for using an Achievement server this time around, 53 destructions in one life just screams taint :O/, much more than my kills / points in a single life does. At least ~20 kills is believable, for decent players at least, not me since I suck and don't expect to stay alive as I goes balls out to win, not camp / get points.

Since the new pyros can actually hurt people now, having half a team of them leaves the maps still playable, unlike the swarm of medics who would refuse to heal anyone and chase after scouts with the needle gun.

It died down faster because people found a program that you double click and it instantly gives you all available achievements. General, Medic, and Pyro. Had a guy talking about it the other night on Gravelpit I think it was. 30 seconds and you have all unlocks apprently. Hopefully Valve fixes it soon. As far as I know, that's been around since the Medic achievements. Someone was talking about it on another forum during that. No clue if Valve just isn't aware of it, just doesn't care, or can't fix it.

I cant blame them, I so love the sound of crits ticking off. I believe I only saw one pyro using the flare gun, but more with the backburner. Any reason that they wouldnt be using the flare gun? That one in particular sounds like a no-brainer to me.

The shotgun is a lot more useful for killing other pyros, finishing off burning opponents who make it out of flamethrower range instead of having to chase them down, and general close to midrange combat. If you get into the habit of switching between the flamethrower and shotgun depending on the opponent's position, you'll start missing the shotgun's extra damage when you have the flaregun equipped.

The flaregun is rather pointless up close, since it only does a small amount of initial damage, and you'll be setting them on fire with the flamethrower anyway. It's useful in some places, like lighting up defenders on point C of gravelpit, and harassing people at range or on sniper balconies. In most situations though, the shotgun is more useful.

Yup, shotgun is generally better than flaregun.

Achievement unlocks are stored client side and the character loadouts server side. So Valve could monitor and reset people's achievements that are suspicious but its a pointless endeavor.

Pretty much standard valve maps while we work on learning how to run a server. If you notice anything weird let me know.

Hmm, it was under the normal internet tab before...I'll have to check and see if I messed something up.

Ok, I think I was experimenting with class limits and that would put it in the custom tab. I'll probably disable that and only use when needed though. Heres a link to the free web page they give you with your rental. Gives info on the IP and eventually will show players and scores.

This is going to be the biggest TF2 patch yet, going to add a new gameplay mode, dunno which I would assume Hunted, and several new maps, don't know if they are going to be several community ones or not, the community one this time is Steel. The Heavy's fist replacement sucks, five seconds of crits is terrible, which they should have learned from the Kritzkrieg since it is utterly worthless. The achievement names are hilarious plays on communist and socialist names/terms, you can decipher what they are by looking at their file name. Seems like they are going to make his Fist taunt a one hit kill like they did for the Pyro's shotgun.

According to the internets, the shotgun replacement is a sandwhich that acts as a 100pt medkit, the minigun is one that does 25% less damage while it slows down people it hits by 50%.

Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Team Fortress 2


The Engineer's teleporters can now be upgraded to level three. It will recharge faster the higher level it is

The Engineer's dispensers can now be upgraded to level three. It will give out metal and heal faster as it is upgraded

Spies will be able to recharge their cloaking ability by picking up ammo off of the ground or from health cabinets

Some changes to the second part of the first stage of Goldrush to give the attackers more of an advantage

Any weapons that fire bullets (shotguns, sniper's machine gun, heavy's minigun, etc.) can now break apart the Demoman's stickybombs

The icon on the HUD for a person calling for Medic will now give more information to the medic (if the target is low on health, on fire, etc.)

Added an achievement tracker that will allow people to choose specific achievements that they are trying to get

There is now a custom icon for death messages when the player was killed from a critical hit

Added a new particle effect for when a player enters the water

Added smoke to the feet of a rocket jumping soldier

Players will now have some particles swirling around them so other players can see when they are overhealed

About time for the Spy's Cloak to work like that, Ive wondered why it didnt do that ever since the game came out.

Actually BREAK sticky bombs? Or just move them around easier? Thats dumb if it outright breaks them, why the **** dont rockets and fire do the same?

I dont get why they changed the dispensers, like it already wasn't hard enough to try and kill a ****ing engineer/sentry with one right behind them.

Spy: As a spy myself, I think the change is going to be overpowered. In maps like well I was able to run around cloaked for over a minute easy, more if I dropped to stab 1 and rehid. Its disgusting frankly. I am already devastating enough without having perm-cloak capabilities. Obviously it's worse on maps with more ammo pickups.

Engineer: Dispenser health increases but it doesnt create ammunition quicker... instead it just gives you more ammunition/metal at an individual time. Teleporters take 3-4 seconds fully upgraded... if that.

Demo: You inferred that one right... gunfire will break a sticky. As for being outright dumb, well I think I will play it more to fully determine. However my gameplay as a demo strat wise didn't change much, normally when I place pipes I tend to place them in difficult positions... preferably in an area they won't see as they run in.

The next class update is scout, a large part of their focus is to improve usefulness of scout in maps like dustbowl and goldrush.

I've been playing some the past couple weeks. Logged in last night and it was pretty much like every other class update. 8 million scouts all trying to do stupid things to get the achievements. But damn the unlocks seem powerful. Getting one shot by the shotty, seeing a full health heavy stunned by the ball and killed in less than a few seconds and then caffine injected scouts that you cant hit, youch.

Eh? wtf? Where'd you see the video posted? It's not on the TF2 blog or in their movies section yet. The spy's new watches (Spy and sniper are being done at the same time) are interesting. Cloak and Dagger watch is good, works like how people have been throwing ideas around for his upgrades, as long as you stand still it doesn't drain and starts to regain cloak time, but metal doesn't restore it. Dead Ringer however seems less useful, the idea is kinda good but you will still get killed by anyone with half a brain. After it makes the dead body clone, it needs to let you be able to run through enemy team members or make you invulnerable, otherwise you will still end up getting shot. Im wondering how they are going to work, as in what they are going to replace and if you can use both of them at the same time.

* "Meet the Spy" was unintentionally leaked on the 17th May 2009.

* It is the longest meet the team video yet at 3:20.

* The alarm bell at the beginning is an "Alarm-O-Tron 5000"

* At 0:08, the Soldier's Shotgun is situated between a Sniper rifle and a Flamethrower.

I really don't see that much use for the Dead Ringer in that case. I'd much rather use the one that lets me stay cloaked and recharge as long as I don't move.

As many of you know, the Meet the Spy video was leaked this weekend. Some of you on the forum have wondered if Valve leaked it on purpose. And until we find the clown who did leak it, the answer to that is yes.

Others of you have started a petition to stop Valve from firing anyone over the leak. Once again, this just goes to show you how valuable customer feedback is to us—we hadn't even thought of doing that, but once you see it there in print, it's a fantastic idea. I've been asking people all morning who was responsible and come up empty. But now that I've started firing people, they can't name names fast enough. So far I've got sixty-seven names in the "suspicious" category, fifteen in "very suspicious", and another forty-three I'd been wanting to fire anyway.

I'll keep you posted as I track down the culprit. Rest assured, though: Until I find the person responsible, I vow that Valve will stop work on all projects.

Um... that is decided by the developer, not Microsoft. Microsoft doesn't force developers to charge money for their content.

EA decided to release free Burnout Paradise content packs months ago, for example.
They did the same for Battlefield: Bad Company as well.

They most certainly HAVE forced devs to charge for content. Has it happened everytime? No, and I don't know the deals revolving around the free BP and Bad Company packs, but several times developers have wanted to release something free, and they have been told NO by Microsoft.

And it's one of the problems Valve ran into when wanting to release TF2 updates for it too, at least thats what Ive always understood. Now that they are running into the issue of a console not having enough memory for PC gaming, I don't know wtf they are gonna do to try and get it on there.

Also, the sniper's achievements dont have very good names, they distinctly lack a lot of movie based references like the previous ones have had.

In fact, the sniper's unlockables pretty much all suck. Shield is only good vs. one class, and only if its not visible to them. Bow and arrow seems to just be HL2 physics ****. And if the jar takes the place of the knife, that's just useless. I use the knife a hell of a lot more than the SMG if someone gets the drop on me.

Why did they let Valve release free content pack(s) for L4D? I don't get it...

My Google searches didn't help me out, but Wikipedia did... apparently Epic games' (with Gears of War) is a good example of a developer that was forced to charge for content when they didn't want to.
That's lame... I wonder why some packs are free and MS forces a price on others... I don't think it has a direct tie in to popularity of downloads as Battlefield BC was one of the most popular Live games when its free content was released. Maybe that's because the content was supposed to come with the game in the first place.

Back on Topic! I haven't played much TF2 as I tend to suck at it (not sure why, I'm alright at Counter Strike and other source engine FPS's)... is it hard to unlock some of these extras? Does it require a ton of hours of gameplay?

Added new watch replacement, the Cloak and Dagger. Your cloak meter is only depleted when you move, so you can stay invisible indefinitely if you're standing still

Spy name tags now show up properly when disguised as their own team

Fixed a bug that would cause spectators to see disguise weapons incorrectly

Huh, odd, I never heard about it or saw anything done with it / referring to it. With the scrutiny that people go over TF2 updates anymore, I would have thought something like that would have been caught / a big deal made out of it.

As for how to get ****, apparently its not even drops, you just randomly get ****. Hell, you can be a spectator and manage to get random stuff...

They fixed some bugs with the Ambassador. I like the gun and it's not overpowered like that video. The video showed a spy medic combo on a team stacked game as red on dustbowl 3, big deal.

# Fixed Ambassador not using hitboxes to trace against players. It now works like all other bullet-firing weapons in the game
# Fixed Ambassador shooting through gates
# Fixed Ambassador not critting during the round win period

Added the following:
Ambassador - wooooo
Huntsman - it's a good mid range weapon although needs more ammo

Screw the trading system and just give items players don't have if trading hasn't been implemented yet. Or use a point system so players can purchase items they want.

I must be pretty lucky. Got the Dead Ringer now which completes all the Spy items sans hat. The dead ringer causes lots of chaos and paranoia and it was great hearing the enemy team on an all talk server.

It takes a while, I had to let it run for 24-30 hours before I got all the spy unlocks.

Also, right click the TF2 program on the steam list and look at update info. it's all there.

Team Fortress 2


The Ambassador now does full critical hits on headshots, instead of mini crits

The Dead Ringer now fully drains the cloak meter, even if the Spy leaves cloak early

Fixed Spy disguise menu not being visible in HUD minimal mode

Server log improvements:

Added "player_extinguish" event for servers to log when a Pyro extinguishes flame with the airburst

Fixed kill descriptions for Force-A-Nature & Sandman, so server logs can distinguish them

Identified feign deaths in the events sent to server logs

Fixed server crash related to the Jarate

I got all the unlocks legit by playing normally. It doesn't take too long if you don't think about it. Just play.

Ambassador mini-crit was so weak and I'm glad they fixed it. Too bad about Dead Ringer. It allowed spies to tank the front lines it was so fun. All 3 watches present new play styles which is good.

Standard Cloak - all around positioning
CnD - relay information and territorial harassment
DR - front line chaos

Crazy man. I tried logging into my steam account after not doing so for months because I heard HE2e3 might be announced at E3 and found my account was hacked.

After getting it back, it's just some guy playing TF2 with my account apparently. My friends list was full of his clanmates and he was apparently a death note fan cause his icon and name were all L related.

On the plus side though, I got a bunch of free achievments out of it. :p

Although I am pretty pissed that they used my HL2/HL2e1 gift that I got with Orange Box.

lol, playing on a normal server and just unlocked three things in one respawn, two of which I already had one was an Ambassador which I needed.

Also another update came out, they added back in Achievement based unlocks while leaving in the new method.

And god the Cloak and Dagger is such a good ****ing upgrade, it owns being able to sit still and not be seen. I just wish it regened a bit faster. You can crouch and crawl forward slowly and just barely overtake its regen rate, also I like how it doesn't just fade once you hit ~0%, it kind of flickers like you bumped into someone, but you can keep moving and just stop and let it regen. ****, Ive made these posts and several others just standing out of the way while cloaked http://smiliesftw.com/x/redface.gif

My favorite part of this patch is the ambassador for sure. I was a good shot with the revolver, so now when pyros w+m1 me, I just shoot em in the head a couple times. I don't care much for the cloak and dagger, but the dead ringer is fun sometimes.

I like it too, and I never used the revolver much since Im not that great of a shot and I mainly play spy to sap **** anyway. Im loving the C&D, its soooooo awesome to sit there while it regens and not be spotted / run till my cloak starts flickering and have no one notice it / stop if they do. Makes sneaking a whole hell of a lot easier imo. I havent tried using the Dead Ringer too much, the one time I tried I didn't like it much, let alone nearly as much as I do C&D.

I was playing today as an Engineer for an hour or two, and ended up with a Medic unlock.

Are they just random, or does accumulating points in general unlock them in a random order?

Completely random, but you can still unlock them via achievements.

Ok I take it back. C&D is pretty awesome. I played with it earlier on granary and it was ungodly useful. I like how it's not really BETTER than the original watch, but just different. Very cool valve.

I just killed the same sniper on dustbowl next to red's left (facing it) spawn exit four times in one life with it and the ambassador (they had a razorback on) and got two achievements, Deep Undercover and Melbourne Supremacy, out of it. I have major unlock envy.
I played again today and did way worse than yesterday. On 3 different servers, I would do die several times in a row without getting any kills.
Especially by spies with the Ambassador, or snipers with the bow.

I somehow doubt I'll be getting another unlock anytime soon :(

I picked it up again, and in maybe 6 hours of play over three nights I've unlocked the Huntsman and the Backburner. I've been playing Medic more often than not lately and managed to unlock the Blutsauger and Kritskreig via achievements during normal play.

I tried the huntsman out last night and Im not all that impressed with it, what I am impressed with is that people still manage to nail kills with it at a fairly distant range considering it doesn't zoom at all.

Got the Huntsman on 2fort today, it's not hard to be accurate at range with it... just a longer flight time. (Although my first kill was a pure luck headshot on a demoman in mid-air)

Glad they brought back milestone rewards, because I hadn't gotten anything but KGB since the update.

Jumped in again last night and nabbed a second Blutsauger and the Boxing Gloves. Will be nice when they get the item trading system in place. But since my main classes are engineer, soldier and medic, I need some more updates to really be overjoyed.

Saw some of the hats last night too. Saw a scout with a baseball batting helmet and a heavy running around with a football helmet.

Would recommend trying it at least once. Faster gameplay, heavily modified gametype, "vehicles", ability to deploy multiple sentries, etc.

I unlocked "Cloak and Dagger" as well as the Ambassador :)
C&D is pretty drat awesome compared to default watch.
Went on a good killing streak with it.

It's pretty crazy. You're playing on a gigantic Mario Kart level with warps, ground and air "vehicles" (I think most of them aren't player-steerable, but you can get in and shoot out the windows), "cannons" (which shoot you to the other side of the map), and a ton of game variables are modified.

Heavies seem a little OP, though - I can take out a sniper on the other side of the map :b
Spies are the only class that aren't really modified that much. Everyone else has tons of ammo and clip size (so reloading isn't necessary very often), some guns are a lot different, etc.

It's completely different than vanilla TF2, but it's fun :) And somehow you can still get achievements, too.

Holy ****, just got on 2Fort2Furious and saw a new map, Rats Tequilla. Much like the map Rats and Bedroom (I think thats the name of it), you are essentially the size of a rat in the real world compared to everything around, this one is in like a Tiki Bar with a bunch of alcohol bottles with old timey labels on them and other stuff related to making drinks. Map looks ****ing awesome, love the colours of it.

I just took out like six sentries in one life, a couple of them fully built and others as they were being built in one life on Steel, two different times. Jesus I wish all these **** head snipers could manage to not suck so damn much and try and do useful **** like that. Took out I don't know how many of the engineers and other people too. I think I managed to get five achievements in those two lives.

I really wish they'd add Meridian as a community map, that map is friggen gorgeous.

BUNCH of ****ing changes with this update too, just a few of them:

-Added custom animations played by the losing team during the post-win state. They are moved into third person camera to enjoy them.

-Capturing the flag in a CTF game mode gives the entire capturing team 10 seconds of critboost.

-Sappers attached to a teleporter automatically place another Sapper on the other end of the teleporter, if it exists.

-Engineers wrenching a teleporter will repair the other end as well, and remove Sappers from both if they exist.

-Disguised Spies no longer trigger On-Hit effects (like the Blutsauger's heal).

-Cloaked Spies standing in valid backstab positions no longer raise their knife.

Over the next few days we'll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We're going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we're only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process.

Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.

We realize there is a high level of demand for items, and we're still working on systems to allow you to find them in new ways (via Trading, and crafting duplicates into desired items). However, we need to draw the line at running external applications.

Left 4 Dead is only $15 this weekend on Steam for those who haven't picked it up yet. I just picked it up and am loving it so far. Played through the No Mercy set on single player to try and get the feel for how it all works, what a blast. Sucks to have waited so long to do it, but for $15 so so worth it.

I finally got tired of screwing with Steam to get my old account back - and the only thing hooked to it was my free copy of HL2 I got with an ATI card 6+ years ago...

I don't have anything but HalfLife2 (a friend had a spare copy so he let me have it) at the moment - I got the other games I've been talking about not through Steam - I think I can add them to steam but I dunno if they will let you join me if you got them through steam. gotta figure that out, as I'd love to play Torchlight with some folks
