Thanks for the linkage
Man I <3 Trent.
Seems like this is the vocals accompaniment to Ghosts. Is good, I was missing my Reznor vocals on the last album. I'm *really* liking some of the tracks on here.
First Ghosts, and now this!

FLAC, baby. The torrent for it is awesomely fast :)
I wonder if he's just sort of doing a poll to see what formats people prefer.

Yeah, the FLAC one started moving blazing fast after I stopped looking. About five minutes after I added them they were going pretty slow and the huge one hadn't even started yet, in less than 10 minutes later the FLAC one was finished. Im kind of surprised how many people are downloading the huge Wave one.
Edit: just looked, FLAC one wasn't even in there a whole 13 minutes before finishing. Apple lossless one took ~22 minutes.
Gotta be nice to be famous and popular enough to make it look like a free gift when it's just surrender to the inevitability of filesharing anyhow. But hey. Can't fault musicmakers for being clever. Plus it's free. Everybody loves free food and T-shirts and stuff.

Trent's already said he liked the idea of OiNK and didn't he start going against the record companies once he noticed they were ripping people off in Australia on his CDs or some ****?
He could be an ass and try to litigate against people. Instead he's just making it free. I don't think that's a bad thing Trolo :P

I dont believe he was saying it was bad thing. I believe he was saying he was doing a good thing for the sake of marketing, not the sake of doing a good thing.

I think it's more like saying "Radiohead are a bunch of chumps" and giving a middle finger to the record companies at the same time.
I dunno, he invites people to remix his stuff, and even hosts remixing tools for people to **** around with attached to the main site. Marketing, maybe. Seems like he has an honest artistic motivation though.
Although giving the record companies the finger is never a bad thing either.
I'm not saying it's one or the other. It's a combination of both. Warhol, probably the person with the clearest understanding of modern America, formulated for us our country's real aesthetic: "Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art."
What is implicit in that is that the converse is also true--the best art is good business. Even Michelangelo had to get paid.

Downloading now.
As far as artistic motivation goes, he's at the point where he can afford to be artistically motivated. It's a boatload of free advertising, gets his music back out in front of folks who may have put it down, and I'm willing to bet that the record company still retains rights to the remixes.
All in all, it's win-win.
I'm willing to bet that the record company still retains rights to the remixes
From Wiki:
As of 2007, Reznor split his ties with Interscope Records, and is now an independent, unsigned musician.
I think he meant that Trent still owns the rights to the re-mixes.
And Trolo, why are you being all curmudgeonly about this? :P Who cares if fans think it's goodwill while it may be in part a recognition of market realities. The end results all seem pretty positive. Or are you just wanting to be the guy beating his own drum on this one?

By beating his own drum you mean calling a duck a duck?
I'm okay with it, whatever Trent's reasons, I think it is a good direction.
I've got no problems with releasing free music. Nor do I think he was being mean-spirited or solely capitalizing. I'm saying get dreamy in one eye and keep the other on the business half of the equation.

Or crosseyed?
What if you're a beholder? How many eyes do you keep on the bottom half of the equation, and if you have that many eyes down there, do you in fact have to sub divide the bottom half?
This guy is funny shyte.
Hello everyone.
I'd like to thank everyone for a very successful year so far in the world of Nine Inch Nails. I'm enjoying my couple of weeks off between legs of our Lights In The Sky tour and got to thinking... "wouldn't it be fun to send out a survey to everyone that's shown interest in NIN?" Well, that's not exactly how it went, but regardless - here it is. As we've moved from the familiar world of record labels and BS into the unknown world of doing everything yourself, we've realized it would benefit us and our ability to interact with you if we knew more about what you want, what you like, what you look like naked, etc. I know it's a pain in the ass but we'd truly appreciate it if you'd take a minute and help us out. As an incentive, everyone who completes the survey will be able to download a video of live performance from this most recent tour (and I know what's going through your little minds right now: "I'll just grab this off a torrent site and not have to fill out the survey!!!" and guess what? You will be able to do just that and BEAT THE SYSTEM!!!! NIN=pwn3d!!!)
BUT
What if we were to select some of those that DO complete the survey and provide them with something really cool? I'm not saying we'll ever get around to it, but if we did maybe something like signed stuff, flying someone to a show somewhere in the world, a magic amulet that makes you invisible, a date with Jeordie White (condoms supplied of course), you know - something cool. See, you'd miss that opportunity AND be a cheater.
Do the right thing - help us out. You'll feel better.
Thank you and I've had too much caffeine this morning,
Trent

Heheheh yeah. I filled out the survey. Took me 30 seconds. Figure they were nice enough to supply free music, least I could do is take 30 seconds of my time to fill out a dumb survey.

Wait what? Artist got to not only do the internet wise thing but now can't also do it cause it makes em rich? What we care as the enduser? As an internet aficinado all you have to say is "We win!" DOubly so if they are only doing it cause they are profit maximizing. Then you get to say "In your face Metallica!"

Now he'll sodomize your soul in the chain-filled hell pit of eternity.
Poor guy.
Or lucky I guess, depending on which kind of fan you are.

I know someone who would consider that not just lucky but the epitome of bliss since it's Trent. Man, sometimes I wish I knew less scary people. Or at least a normal person. Even just one would be nice. Every time I think I have one they change. It's weird.
Ever seen the video for, I believe it is, Happiness in Slavery? Ye gods. I mean really, ye gods. (And no I'm not talking about the Broken: The movie although it's included with it. That PALES in comparison to the vid for Happiness in Slavery.)
Like I said, I actually know someone who thinks that was an awesome video (didn't bother me but very little does any more) and uh, yeah, like I said, I know some scary people. And keep in mind this is me saying that.

Trent said he was an OiNK member and it was *the* best place to find hard to find music, because he could find stuff on OiNK that he couldn't find in the retail market. He couldn't buy it because no one was selling it.
