Starting Races/Stats

Do they truly matter all that much? Say I was going Thief. I've got a lot of choices of race. Recommended are Hume and Mithra. But would it really hurt me in the long run to go Elvaan or even Tarutaru? Is it anything like EQ where it didn't matter in the end whether you were a Barb Rogue or a Halfling Rogue?

Upon reaching lvl70, some races lag noticably behind in certain stats (ex, Tarutaru's Str and HP), but it's neglectable if you have an effective main job/sub job cominbation.
