The area of the states I live in finally dragged itself into the 20th century and obtained the ability to provide folks DSL. I ordered my service and already received the modem. The modem is a dual connect, so I have the option of USB or Ethernet.
What are the advantages of using either? Other than the obvious physical problems (my cat is always knocking lose USB connectors, would be hard for her to knock lose an ethernet cable, but that's a minimal problem is USB would be faster).

I say Ethernet. USB you would have to load software for, it'd probably only work for Windows and USB for networking is just...ew.

from personell experience I would say ethernet.
I used to run my modem via USB. it slowed it down some.. not very much but still slowed it.
And the fact that if you are plugging in and unplugging USB alot it raises the chance that the connectors will get broke( esp if your cat is messing with them.) this has happened alot with my keyboard connector when I had my computer set up differently it broke it on the mainboard and pissed me off.
So I would go with the ethernet.

There is absolutely no reason to use USB unless you happen to not be able to connect the ethernet for whatever reason.

Nah, I can use Ethernet. I've just got some time to do some research since it won't actually be activated for a freaking month, and wondered what the pros/cons of each connection were. I knew there were very few cons with ethernet, but had never even thought of USB for networking so wasn't sure what the deal there was.
Now i just have to dig out a NIC since I didn't put one in the last pc I build 'cause I didn't think I'd ever have a use for it. Edited by: Aruvius at: 11/26/03 9:46 am
hands down, no question about it, use ethernet..

Yeps, I was getting massive lag in BF1942 with USB until I switched over to good ol' cat5
