Targeting Ring Help

Ok I understand the instructions to get the 3D targeting ring to work if you have a custom UI. I use the default UI, what do I have to do to get this thing to work? Create a custom UI(which I'm not sure how to do and cant seem to find an easy step-by-step manual on the web) then go thru the quick fix? Sorry for the newbie question.
