Ya know, I've been to the apple website plenty of times, but it never occured to me to click the link at the top that says "Educational Discounts" until somebody told me the price they paid for their iPod with the discount: $269.

Apparently Apple offers a pretty comprehensive discount price for students, all you have to do is click on the Education Discount banner at the top and find your school. Suddenly your wisked away to another Apple page (with the name of your school at the top) where suddenly everything is cheaper.

I figured you guys might like to know that, because I sure did.

Can't beat the value.

The day I pay that much cash for something that needs $100 every 18 mo's for a battery replacement.. well, its just never gonna happen.

Dont buy a car then...

you also might not want to exaggerate on the $100 cost.. Replacement batteries can be purchased for as low as $39. You may want to stay clear of Cell phones, laptops, and any other device that requires a lithium battery.

good attempt at blasting the poddy though.. I give it an "A" for effort, but a D- for substance..

Hmm, I've had my car for over ten years now, and I've replaced the battery once. Not quite to scale with the ipod there. ;) And im not attempting to "blast the ipod" just pointing out its weak point. other than the non-replaceable battery, its a pretty nifty device, it just costs 2x what it should, and when they expect the consumer to pay that sort of price for an item, then I expect it to last alot longer without needing major repairs. And you see, cellphones, laptops, and most other devices, dont require the consumer to send them to the manufaturer to replace the batteries.

Apple provides a service of battery replacement.. You are not required to infact send it to them..

You could take your car to the dealership to get new Tires, brakes and battery, but you dont, because its a hell of a lot cheaper to do it someplace else.. the same is the case with the poddy..

If the poddy used 4 double A batteries, how many of those would you go through in 18 months?

what would the cost be? I betcha it would be more than $40

Heh. You've rather made my point for me in this thread. If someone else can provide the same hardware for less than half if Apple's price, why go to Apple for the hardware at all?

Considering I listen to mine eight hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year... plus long roadtrips (don't have a car adapter)...

$50 and twenty minutes of my time every eighteen months? Sounds great to me.

edit: because it's the best mp3 player ever made, and once you've used one you won't know how you lived without it Edited by: Argyll7th at: 12/9/03 9:21 am

You bring up a good point. Why go Intel when China has the 'Dragon' microprocessor for WAY less.

Speaking of educational discounts, they also work extremly well for Microsoft products..

Microsoft offers them everywhere you can purchase their software, and there is no verification process..

The honor system?

As for iPod, I've got a week to decide whether or not I want that or the $290 Rio Karma. It has a 20 gig hard drive, 16 hour battery, and an ethernet connection.

It's not as sexy, but the sexy factor has come and gone with me while I used my brothers pod for months.

This one has a $20 mail in rebate now too...

As for the apple site Here's what I did.

I went to my univeristy's section of the apple site and found the prices for the Ipod I wanted.. and printed it out... and Bestbuy matched it.
