Hi All,
I only play Everquest and once EQ2 comes out I will be playing that. My situation is I currently see a lot of choppiness when a lot of people are on my screen. I want to upgrade my PC to fix this issue and to be ready for EQ2. Here are my current specs,
AMD 2400+
Asus A7V8N-Deluxe
1GB of 400mhz DDR (Samsung I think)
ATI 9700 Pro
2x Western digital 80gig 8MB
Koolance Water cooled case
Anyone have idea on what to upgrade? New processor? Or should I just go Intel, I can spend a lot on this so money is not a problem.
Thanks in advance.

EQ's engine just sucks. It's not graphics lag thats the problem, its the stupid serverside lag.
I've got 4 boxes at home,
One close to your specs,
One with an AMD 3200+
2GB RAM
ATI 9800 XT
One with INTEL 3.2GHZ
2GB RAM
NVidia 5700
And one with AMD 64FX
2GB RAM
ATI 9800XT
All three have the same amount of choppyness, lag, etc...
I got tired of upgrading my system only to see no noticeable increase in EQ's framerate. All other games run faster then hell on all 3 boxes, just EQ is a PITA.
My reccomendation, is learn to deal with the lag, and get yourself a laptop or something fun

EQs engine doesn't suck that much, you just never have 70 different player models on your screen at a time in other games, let alone in big zones like EQ's.
Upgrading the CPU oughta have the biggest effect tho.

Dont upgrade with that system. Just downgrade EQ. Turn off all models, emotions, horses(they still suck).
That will make EQ run great. If still bad, lower texture quality to lowest and eq should run perfect with clip plane at full unless in bazaar or on raids. I have less of a system than that and EQ runs like a dream for me.

Agreed, it's the game, not your system.
I have an Athlon T-bird 850 running at 933MHz, 512MB of PC150 running at 133 with the most aggressive settings available, and a GF3 Ti200 running at 175/400 (I think those are defaults, reset by a driver upgrade. I had it overclocked some...). A pair of 8MB cache WD hard drives in RAID0.
I took a break from EQ shortly after Luclin came out. When I started playing again, I got the new expansions, and my install got screwed up. Upon reinstalling, I turned on all the new models and options. Lag was horrible. I could barely move near the Nexus stone in PoK.
After getting a chestplate that looked like a dress, I switched back to the old models. I now get absolutely no lag at all in PoK. And that's 933MHz and GF3. I think a CPU and/or video card upgrade may help some, but it will be a lot of cash for a very small improvement. And it's always a bad idea to try to buy upgrades for software that hasn't been released yet. By the time the software is released, your hardware is old again, and they've probably changed the software's requirements anyway. =)
