So this guy bought a brand new Sony Vaio instead of letting me build him a computer. So he wants a new video card. I tell him ok, no prob. Go to his house, crack open the tower and explain to him that after the monetary conversion, the freight, and all the other charges, that not only would my system be about the same price, but it could handle high end video cards.

His state-of-the-art Vaio HAS NO AGP SLOT!

WTF was Sony thinking? When you look at the mobo, you can see an outline, and dots for pins, and it says AGP, but the buggers never put one on this mobo.

I call Sony, Tech support says any card will work (even after telling him there was no AGP port) and to call another number to order. I call the number, they direct me to tech support, who directs me to the ordering number. I ask the lady to list what video cards there are available for this model. She replies with "Just the intergrated video" Which confrimed my first thought. Sony is ignorant.

Are you ranting, or asking which is the best PCI card for your friend? If its the latter, the 128mb Radeon 9100 PCI is the best (factoring value into account as well; there is a PCI GeForceFX 5600 which is probably slightly faster in some instances, but it's much more expensive).

I remember a PCI shootout a while ago, I'll try to find it and edit this post with a link to the article.

Mainly ranting. How the hell could Sony release a computer these days that can come with a DVD burner, but no freaking AGP port?

Oh yeah, thanks for the linkage.

Sony still sucks tho.

(I better quit while I'm ahead or this is rant hall bound lol)

Many prebuilt computers come without AGP slots. It's quite common for stuff at SlickDeals.net to mention when something does have an AGP slot, since it's so common for everything to be integrated and not have a slot. -------------------------

Yeah, sadly, that's the one reason I refuse to ever buy an 'assembled' computer.

You're much safer buying individual parts through Pricewatch.com and putting it together yourself.....at least then you know what you're getting.

*grumbles profanities at Gateway and Bestbuy for selling "refurbished" crap computers*
