Okay, for starts, don't post here much at all. Though this is the only board I read that has a technical section so ya'll get the question.
I'm starting to run into fairly bad video lag. Now question is. I have a p4 1.4 ghz processor, 640 mb ram, and a geforce 2 256 64mb video card. Now what single piece of equipment would provide the best improvement for me? Or is there no single piece. Any advice would be appreciated. I would say the graphic card. I'm no computer genius, but the only difference between your computer and mine is that you have 0.1 more ghz and 400 less RAM. But the RAM you have is enough. I have a GeForce 3 too.
But before you run out and buy a new Graphic Card, let someone smarter than I answer the question.

If you're running the same applications and games and you're starting to experience lag you might want to try some system cleaning and the such. Two quick steps to clean up your system.
1. Open up your system and aquire a bottle of compressed air and a vacuum and clean off all the dust from the case.
2. Then back up all your data and format your computer. If you're not consistent in defragging/spyware/viruses this is usually a quicker route and the best way to confirm there's nothing holding up your system.
If you're playing newer games and thats why you're lagging out. I would suggest slowly replacing everything. Right now imo is not the time to buy a video card, (well not to buy any hardware till a few new things come out later this year) But I'd start by aquiring a new mobo, I believe the is-7 from abit will work on your older p4. Then when aquiring money to upgrade the rest of your system go with a video card - cpu - memory
This all depends on the speed of your memory, if you have pc133 memory you'd have to upgrade your mobo as well as your memory at the same time.

my comp is similar to yours in all specs. I originally had a gf2 mx400 64mb then upgraded to a gf3 ti200 and it probably made a 25-30% increase in FPS. This was probably 1.5 years ago so it's time to upgrade to another vid card for me but changing to the gf3 ti200 made a noticeable improvement in high lag zones like Jaggedpine or Bazaar. It really depends on the game....
some games benefit most from fast processors while others benefit more from graphic cards.
In my experience, EQ puts more strain on the CPU than the graphic card, so upgrading your processer might get you better results for the same money, but then again it also depends on your motherboard, type of RAM etc etc etc Master Scout Tebryan Bladesong, Saracen Scout (50-R2L2-Soj2), Guild Companions, Legendary GM Fletcher (1034), Guinevere
