When I log into a FTP server, I get hung at the LIST command. I have to turn off the firewall to do any FTPing.
I had this problem some months ago, but it mysteriously went away, now after doing a full reinstall of my machine, its back. This happens on multiple FTP clients and servers.
What is the firewall blocking, and is there anything I can do?

FTP uses 2 ports 20 and 21. Make sure the firewall lets you access them.

....or turn on passive mode in your ftp client...

Just for future reference, the XP firewall only blocks inbound connections. It has absolutely no effect on outbound stuff. -------------------------

You can monitor and block outbound connections as well

If you have something to back that claim up, I'd like to see it. Everything I've ever read said that it blocks only inbound connections, which matches my experiences with it.

Looking at the ICF settings right now, the only outbound options you can configure are four ICMP response messages. You can either check or uncheck the option to allow them. So I guess it's not totally 100% ignoring all outgoing traffic, but you can't use it to control regular outgoing traffic the same way you could with ZoneAlarm or Kerio. -------------------------
