ACK...sorry dude :frown

Your right, you probably will not get much help from the police...not that they wouldn't want to help its just hard to recover that kinda stuff. I had something like that happen and its like...oh well :hmph. Did you check with the insurance companies? Maybe if your lucky your brother bought it with an American Express card, they have an insurance policy for items purchased with the AMEX card.

Good luck with the brother faction :blink

Speaking from experience they will do absolutley nothing, this happened to me a few years back. The police basically laughed at me when I mentioned recovery.

Yep, cops will take the report and do nothing.

My old truck seemed to have a sign on it. "Break into me" It was busted into 4 times.

First time I was at a friends house just after they moved in, the guy shattered the passanger window. Took my CD's (Three of which were irreplacable, One that pissed me off most was the soundtrack cd from the Lunar: The Silver Star Story :angry ) Then he tore up my dash and broke the CD Player part while trying to get the radio out. He didnt succeed because to mount the thing in there we had to attach a brace to the back of it to hold it up, it wouldent come out without removing that brace.
To top it off the guy left his flashlight, pocketknife, and screwdriver in the truck. The cops didnt take any of it, said "its been going on around here" and that was it. The next night he broke into the friends Pickup parked in the driveway. Didnt "try" to take anything but the CD, left the cellphone on the dash, tore up the dash trying to get the radio out again. And this time when he left he had dropped his jacket, with the cd's in it, in their yard. AGAIN the cops didnt take the jacket for evidence or anything.

The second time was at the same friends new apartment complex again just after he moved in (about 3 months later). The broke in, completely trashed the radio trying to get it out (Same radio that already had the broken CD player, i was lazy and didnt get it fixed yet). The back door and cargo doors of the truck were also slightly ajar so we know they went through everything. But the didnt take anything except my slingshot, a knife, and ironicly the photocopy of my car insurance info that I keep in there. The even left a portable TV in the back. :blink

After that I installed an alarm and replace the radio. Two more times I found the window spidered but still in the frame. Alarm scared them off. One of those times I was parked next to a BMW with a obvious expensive sterio system in it and a full rack of CD's in the passanger seat. Instead they decide the 10 year old suburban with a 60$ radio and a "Warning: Alarm installed" sticker on the window was a better target. :/

I had a chevy blazer that I put a prety nice pioneer into.. 4 years later I hydroplaned... spun a 360 on the interstate. then rolled another 360. (was better then a roller coaster) as the blazer quick rocking from the momentium It occured to me my CD player was still playing.... HELL YEAH!!!! 1 MINUTE SKIP BUFFER!!!!!! I took that deck out of what was left of the blazer.. and put it into my jeep (sadly a razor blade could be used as a key on the windows) about a year later. I left it in the parking lot to goto a football game.. came back.. and it was gone....

I'm mostly happy that they didn't cut any windows to get in. called the city cops to come handle a report.. they sent over the university campus police.. he took my report and said sorry we don't have a detective on the campus force (no duh why do you think I called the city). he left and I'm pretty sure they shredded it. the next week's campus paper didn't mention it in the crime report.

and they say we have one of the safest campuses in the nation.

sorry to hear about yours bro.

My truck got broken into a few months back, swiped all of my cd's, my stereo and speakers, and my ****ing bowling shoes. They left my normal sneakers in the car, my snowboarding boots, and my backup work shoes, but the assholes took my bowling shoes. I was so bitter that they just didnt take it all, they had to take like, the two most important materialistic things that i had. Music, and bowling. ****ers.

Odd that they wouldn't fingerprint the items that were left in the car. Hope you catch them and beat them into oblivion.

My girlfriend and I went on a trip to Arizona so I could meet her father for the first time.

We went out to play pool (all three of us) and as we were leaving the truck, I had issues getting my door to lock, but eventually got it and we went inside. When we came out later her father's truck was gone. We were walking to where it was parked and it was obvious that it wasn't there, but we kept walking anyway and I was thinking "oh #$@#...I just got my girlfriend's father's car stolen...

Luckily when we got to the empty parking space, it became clear what had happened. The driver's side window was on the ground...on his side of the car. I felt so guilty being relieved that it wasn't my fault and not sympathizing enough that his favorite truck, his baby if you will, was stolen.

-background on this truck- it is the type of truck you love only because of how long you had it. A normal person would jump for joy at having it stolen. The exterior was poor, the interior old and stained. He had had it for 20 years. It really hurt to see it gone.

Anyway, police came and took a report, took us home, and while her father was out golfing the next day, the police called me, having found it. It was really cool, the thieves shredded the ignition assembly, so the only way to start the car is to hotwire it, which the police showed me how to do. Let me tell you something...it is frighteningly easy. Anyway, on the way back, I got to call my friends on my cell in California and tell them that I was in Arizona driving a stolen car that I had hotwired.

Point of the story - The thieves had left a pair of sunglasses inside. I was like, "All right! Souvenir!" The police saw me looking at them though and asked if they were ours. My girlfriend said no before I could answer, and the police took 'em...sigh.

Anyway, the truck was fine except for the broken window and the ignition assembly. I don't recall if the radio was stolen or not, but I don't think it was...just needed a ride I guess.

-----------------

Korthuran - a good stroller is expensive! I bet that stroller was worth more than most of the stereos in the parking lot hehe.

it seems to be a stealing spree for starwars. Two employee cars got broken into with 4 security guards on the lot tonight. Both stereos were stolen, the jumper cables taken out of the trunk, ect. Another theater had another break in at the same time, and one of the guys father had his car broken into a circuit city at the very same time.

really ****ed up night all in all. Thieves literally make me sick to my stomach.

It's a beautiful day in San Diego, and somebody just stole my bicycle. Laugh all you want, but I do not drive. So, going for groceries means a sweaty half a mile walk in the heat.

And of course I am totally broke so buying another is not an option until I land a job, which, on the bright side, could actually be pretty soon.

May the person who did this have a sudden recurrent painful attack of hemorroids that won't ever let them enjoy the ride!

A brief note to all of those who ask why the police don't take certain actions when investigating stolen merchandise from vehicles. Well, first let me explain that I am not a cop, only a police dispatcher and I can only explain from a Connecticut point of view. To start with, taking objects from someone elses vehicle is only larceny, a very low rent charge. If they break the window you can add minor vandalism as well. Here at my department, if there is no suspect in the larceny (and I mean a valid suspect, not "So and so did it, I know they did!") then the report is taken over the phone. Busting stereo thieves isn't easy, especially if they are random or isolated instances. Even with the repetative nature of the movie theatre break ins, unless the theatre itself hired an officer to sit in the parking lot all night the best the cops could do would be periodic drive throughs. Now, if you do get a cop to come to the scene, they're gonna look in the car and say "Yup, stereo's gone." There will be no dusting for prints or impounding the car for evidence. In order to process a scene and dust for prints, the detective division needs to be called in (normally 8-10 people) requiring a whole lot of overtime pay. Not to mention the fact that in 98% of the cases the only prints turned up would be the vehicle owner's and family and friends. Plus, I think you need like 8 positive matches for a print to hold up in court. Now what can be done is the cop should take any serial numbers you have for the items. These can be entered into the NCIC system which is a nationwide database for all law enforcement personel. This way if the thief gets stopped down the line for runnin a light or whatever and the cop sees a bunch of stereo equipment in the car they can run the numbers and find out if it was ever entered as stolen. Mind you this only works if the stolen property has some sort of unique and identifiable number. Also please understand that I've been on both sides of the fence here. My stereo was ripped off a couple years ago. And unless someone's concious has been eating away at them and they decide to turn themselves in after all this time I'll never see that system again. But, there really isn't much the police can do in that situation either. Unfortunately that's just kinda how it works.

Radios getting stolen? Pshhh...thats kids stuff. I would have been estatic if thats all that happened to my car...

I had a 2001 Acura Integra. This was the last year that the car was produced. This car was AMAZING. It was definitely the best car I have owned - two door, leather seats, spoiler, etc etc. So i was away at school and I get phone call saying that my sister went to get into the car to drive to school in the morning and that the car was broken into. Did they take the radio? nooooo...instead they stole the two front bucket seats, tore up the floor boards to get at the center console, and tried to get the radio but couldn't.

Bottom line - they totalled the car. They said to replace the seats alone it would cost about $10M. Thats more than half of the value of the car. I was NOT happy. I could've lived with a broken window and a stolen radio...at least i would still have my car...

This isn't just cars either, this is in homes as well. Unless you lose something of extreme value, you're expected to be reasonably insured.

My wife and I had our apartment broken into back before we were married. The ^$%# kicked open our back door and trashed the joint looking for loot (man did they break into the wrong place). We lost some minor electronics, a Playstation and games, and our pillow cases. ^$%# must have gone to school for theft, it was ingeneous. They used our own pillow cases for loot sacks. :p They also seemed to know exactly where to look. Bureaus, drawers, and nightstands were ripped inside out.

We did lose a couple of sentimental items that were irreplacable though- My great grandfather's antique drafting tools and my wife's family heirloom jewlery. Not really worth huge money, but emotionally valuable nonetheless.

Another oddity though- both of us were moonlighting as DJs at the time and had more than 5000 cds tucked away in those 3-ring binder cases. Didn't even touch them even though they were made for portability. They tried to get my Pioneer entertainment system though and gave up. I have a thing about exposed wirting in any of my electronics, so they were "installed" pretty tight. Our roommate probably took the biggest hit as he lost a considerable amount of paintball gear in a big ass knapsack.

Anyhow, the cop that showed up after I discovered it was very cool and sympathetic. He gave me the lowdown that the thieves probably wouldn't be caught and ultimately we were SOL in getting our stuff back. There was a string of similar burglaries in our area and he said chances are they would get caught, but not associated with our particular break in. We were to make a list of the missing stuff and get it to the PD for their records. He said to keep an eye out at the local pawn shops for a few months and if anything turned up, contact them immediately. Ultimately the paperwork and report were for insurance purposes which helped get our renters insurance claim fairly quickly.

Suxxor.

As for car break ins, I've had a few of those too. Learned real quick that you don't leave anything in your car that you wouldn't leave on the front seat with the door unlocked. :p Detachable faceplates are your friend. Also, use the stock speaker grill covers that came with the car not the neon blue ones with blinky lights that just transmit dollar signs to everyone around you. I saw a jackass the otherday in a pimped out Celica with a HUGE "Powered by Alpine" sticker on his back window.

Heh funny thing... the area i work in is so bad, that we DO have police patrols. We have a gang unit that sits at my work friday and saturday nights. It is awesome. Our theft rate is unfortunently very very high, we havecraploads of fights, ect. =\.

the employee parking area is now patrolled by one guard almost all the time because it is such a high risk area but much easier to watch over, with more camaras.

The answer to your question SX is " yes and no"

In the financial industry $10M = $10,000.00 from the Roman numeral for thousand (M). (1 M = 1 thousand, 1 MM = 1 thousand thousands, or 1 million)

We do not use the K from Kilo to represent thousand, though it is commonly used elsewhere.

Well this story had a somewhat happy ending, my BF bought me another bicycle (because he's cool like that, or maybe was just tired to hear me commiserate the loss of the old one).

All is well, then? Heck no! Some jerk stole my nice, comfy, girl friendly, gel-filled $40 bicycle seat. At 6 in the afternoon, in a nice area of town which has a TON of restaurants and people walking by. I am so pissed I just can't believe it happened (again).

What is up with me and bicycle bad luck, I am not sure, I was thinking of buying a motorcycle, but after having my stupid seat stolen during the 10 minutes I spent at the laundromat folding my clothes I am seriously reconsidering!

Plus, what horrible reputation, a rogue that gets her stuff stolen on a regular basis! &%^$##$$!!!

If your seat was one of those quick release kind, then yeah, it would get stolen. If not, then you got yourself a dedicated thief. And if you get another quickrelease one, take it with you when you leave.

People suck. I've had bike parts stolen before and I know how much it sucks (esp if its your only transportation).

I've only ever had my car broken into once, and that was the time when I chased the guy down, kicked him, and sat on him and threatened to cave in his skull with a hammer if he moved.

Window got replaced and I got $800 to fix my leather seat that was scratched up by the broken glass.

I've heard horror stories about tailgates being stolen, so when I get my truck running and replace the tailgate that's been beat to hell, I'm going to weld the bolts in place.

Several years ago, I had the stereo stolen out of my car... I was driving a cheap Neon and they broke the locks, ripped out the stereo, and basically pillaged the rest of the car. I called the cops and filed a report, but they basically said that they couldn't do anything without evidence, this stuff happens all the time so check the pawn shops, blah blah blah. 2 other cars were also hit in our complex that evening.

About a week later, I had a knock on my door at 3 AM... it was our apartment manager. One of the other neighbors, after hearing about all the breakins, had installed a camera on his computer and pointed it out to the parking lot. He had also installed something so that when there was motion on the camera, it'd beep and wake him up. That night, his camera had caught someone getting INTO MY CAR and looking around... yes, this was a 2nd breakin, even though I had nothing in the car. He called the apartment manager who then called me. We went to his apartment and viewed the video, which was clear as day and showed the guy's face, clothing, everything. It was just disgusting to see some stranger digging around in my car.

We thought that video was awesome evidence and could possibly lead us to the stereo thief, so we called the cops. 1 cop came out 2 hours later, refused to see the video, and basically said, "If he didn't steal anything this time, we can't pursue this". I asked him if he'd please at least take the video and consider it with the other police report, because it's entirely possible he thought I'd have a new stereo installed by that time and my locks might still be broken. The cop refused again, and he also wouldn't fill out a second police report for this incident. :(

Since then I traded the car in for an Accord with a security system and whatnot... Accords are one of the most-stolen cars, so they'll probably just take the whole car next time, but now they'd need to get into the garage before getting in the car. :)

sometime between 1985 - 1987 i went to visit my father who was studying to get his Master's degrees from boston , after we stayed in boston for a month and waited for my uncle and cousns we all went to canada to see niagara falls

after my uncle bag got stolen there and after he got it back 9 hours later ( they found it with our pasports , they thiefs only took the money )

we decided to cut the trip short and went back to boston

when we came back , the apartment door was open ( broken in )
we called the cops , i expected to see a lot of cops ( too much kojak )
but there were 2 , and they kept on asking questions without filling a paper even and standing in 1 room only , i went to the bathroom and i found a cigarette in there ! i told the cop , he went to the bathroom , looked at it and flushed it down

I had my Jeep Cherokee broken into a couple years ago and had about $800 worth of stereo equipment stolen. State Farm replaced all of the stuff, and didn't even require any receipts. I actually ended up getting better stuff than I had in the first place, and all I had to pay for was to retint the window they had broken. I made out like a bandit!

Tonight started well enough, a group of 6 friends and I decided to camp the Sith Lord. When we got to the zone it was full, and was so laggy we had to set up camp away from the other groups. Finally, our turn came up...we killed the Sith Lord. I got a /tell from someone wanting to borrow my AoN, cuz he had never been in skellie form before, and thought it was cool. I let him click it, and then he CAMPED!!!

Someone tried cutting thru my convertable top one time lucky for me they cut in the wrong spot and couldnt reach the door locks still set me back 300 bucks to fix the top.

Fyi car alarms are so cheap nowadays how someone can own a car without one is beyond me. Your cars a big investment in most cases and your lifeline to work if you buy a sound system worth hundreds of dollars and dont spring eighty bucks for an alarm arent you reaping what you sow.In a perfect world you wouldnt have too but thats not reality.

Another reason police wont do anything about such thefts is the majority of the thieves are teenagers/minors and would only get a slap on the wrist. Odds are you stereo's/speakers are sold for 10 dollars for gas money thats why they do it.

Totally ineffective in my area - we tend to just curse and mutter that another a-hole's car alarm is going off, and don't even bother looking out the window. Reason being is that they go off constantly due to a lot of people having them set too sensitive - I've had someone else's car alarm go off due to the sound of me slamming my tailgate closed. The alarm system on my old Xterra would only go off if the door was forced open or if either end of the car was raised 45 degrees or more (as if it were being towed)

Now a LoJack (http://www.lojack.com/) system, that would be better worth the investment, IMO.

The reason car alarms work isnt because everybody looks out the window and calls the cops. They work cause of adrenaline the would be thief (usually teen-ager)has a bit of it running through their system it makes them twitchy the alarm scares them off. The bulk of would be thieves out there aren't about to patiently steal a radio and whatnot with an alarm blaring.

Ok real life example here 15years ago(approx) me and some freinds were walking around late at night. The one kid who we will call Red saw a house with the garage door open(past midnight) he walks in without saying a word to the rest of us a minute later he comes out pushing a moped. He pushes the thing at a run about half a block starts it up and takes off(left us and never said a word). I've seen this same guy run like a rabbit because he tried a car door and set an alarm off. Guys like Red would calmly steal Fort Knoxx if everything went ok but the first bump in the road is complete panic.

Far sky you probably have an antivirus program on your computer because you know what hackers do. Your sister, female friends prolly carry mace or pepper spray because they know what rapists do. You also prolly know people who put their houselights on timers when they go on vacation because they know what burglars do. How is it you know what car-thiefs(not the whole car stuff inside as well) do yet the instant connection between a 500dollar sound system and an 80dollar alarm eludes you. We all know its not a perfect world a little prevention goes a long way.

P.S. This applies to birth control as well :)

I know and accept that. I'm saying that blaming the victim of theft as being culpable in that theft is wrong. "Well you should have prevented it" doesn't wash. The responsibility for the theft lies with the thief and the thief alone.

The bulk of would be thieves out there aren't about to patiently steal a radio and whatnot with an alarm blaring.
Car alarms only work on the most inexperienced of criminals, if at all. They have become such a common sound of urban areas that nobody even gives a car a second glance now when its alarm goes off. Even newbie car thieves know that.

A car alarm can be disabled in a couple of seconds and you can bet anybody who is serious about stealing cars or car stereos is going to know how. All car alarms really accomplish is pissing off the neighbors when it goes off at 4am for no particular reason.

Scenario A. A car parked in a well lit driveway with an alarm gets a window smashed alarm goes off and the thief snatches a few CD's.

Scenario B. A 500dollar car with a 2000dollar sound system with exensive brand names plastered to every speaker drives to the seediest bar in the worst part of town and parks owner leaves doors unlocked and it gets broken into.

Is the theif guilty in both instances= Definitely.

Do the victims in both cases share the same zero responsiblity and deserve the same level of sympathy= sorry I just dont think so.

Yes these are extreme examples my point is mainly there are technical victims and there are innocent victims and while both are still victims the difference should be noted.

Oh Hordebear(sorry if mispelled) I agree with your post I just think that car breakins attract the newbie thief who is likely to panic and run from an alarm no-one is paying attention to and he could easily disarm. However that is an opinion from personell exp and actually crime statistics could prove me wrong on that.

//man my spelling just died at the end of this post :)
// oh Tandom your jeep post had me shaking my head thats just so dang petty on the thiefs part you sir have all my sympathy.
