I had always told friends "I wouldn't date a girl that owned an SUV"," in this case it's not even a cute Ute, but a big Ford Exploder. Ugh. She says she lovvvvves it. What to do?

That would mean accepting that being a hypocrite isn't a horrible fate
While I'm pro-SUV and all.... I have to agree with Talius.

Take her camping in it. Get it dirty on the outside too and justify the fact she has one.
4WD's are ok, as long as they get used off road occasionally.

Your insurance doesn't cover windshield repairs? They usually don't like you driving around with a busted windshield, some states even require it be covered...
Aidden, you will call me or Krimzan on it?
Actually if you have a $500 comprehensive like most people the insurance company won't pay for it.
My reponse was to you, but it was just a joke....
Just curious, but do you consider SUV's so bad that you really wouldnt date someone that didnt feel the same way aboutthem as you do?
I honestly though this thread was posted in jest.
Krimzan
10-08-03, 03:18 PM
I wouldn't very seriously date someone who loved them and owned one. That doesn't mean I wouldn't go out with em and see what happened. People can change, and I can change them pretty well sometimes
But the chances of me marrying a conservative? Ha...
I think I have participated in too many anti-SUV threads... all the arguments about someone not needing it, never going off road, etc. seem to apply here. On the bright side, it's an older Explorer, so it is a bit smaller than the new ones, but same gas mileage.

Leave her she doesnt deserve to be with a guy who is gonna hound her over her choice in vehicles. You shouldnt have to stay with someone who makes you politically uncomfortable.
People arent pizza you just cant love the slices that have your toppings on them you gotta love the whole thing.
Didn't really want to say it, but is her buying the SUV an indicator of other things you politically disagree about, or personality things you dislike(I drive a car proven to inflict more damage in an collision because I want to be safe, I don't care how much my car gets to the gallon, ect....)? "They will come back, come back again, as long as the Red Earth rolls. He never wasted a tree or a leaf, why should he squander souls?"
"You're a big one....a tall drink of water, but I got to tell you, you don't look too bright. I got a son, stupid as a man who bought his stupid at a 2-for-1 sale, and you remind me of him." -Mr. Nancy
She's not political. It's just unusual because she's a foreign student from a country where SUVs aren't popular (heck, that'd basically be every country outside of North America). It took me by surprise. It's been a middle-long distance thing so I am yet to see it. (No, not one of those internet dating things.) I guess I'll pay attention to whether it's a V-6 or a V-8, or 2WD or 4WD... I don't think her choice can be a fatal thing, but it does make me want to pay more attention to what her values might be, or what she finds attractive.

Sorry, but if she 'loves her SUV', and she doesn't bat an eyelid when you talk about how @#%$ they are to the planet in terms of gas consumption and environmental concerns, and that's something you care about, then yes, it becomes an issue.
I never mentioned conservatives.
It all depends on how important it is to you.
Heck, I wouldn't get involved with someone who is not pro-life on the whole abortion issue.
Many Vegans wouldn't date a person who is a non-vegan. A person who is an NRA member is probably not going to date someone who wants to ban guns, and vice versa. If someone has strong feeligns about their religious beliefs (or lack therof) then they are probably going to want to date soemone who agrees with them, at least on the core issues.
If SUVs are that much of a hotbutton issue for you, then go ahead and lose her.

That is kind of weird about her being from another country. Friend of mine's GF is German, she is constanly wowed when she comes to the states by the size of our SUVs. "Why do you guys need something so freaking huge? They don't even build roads big enough in germany to hit those things."

I guess my SUV is then considered a 'truck' because the Nissan Xterra is built based on the Nissan Frontier pickup frame. (don't tell the DMV, they make you pay more on registration for a 'truck' than a 'wagon')
As for offroading, mine winds up being SO mudspattered by the end of the summer hehehe... THEN I wash it. (conserve water at least, even if I'm burning up an entire 18 gallon tank of gas every 250 miles or so)

the only bad SUVs shouldnt be allowed to be called SUVs unless their built off a pickup truck frame and have 4wheel drive. AWD isnt ment for offroading due to lack of the 4low mode, and the fact that AWD doesnt lock all 4 wheels into power but is just an overrated traction control.

Also, what part of the country do you live in? If you get snow at all, then a suv is perfectly acceptable. Even without 4 Wheel drive, they're more practical for driving over highly accumulated snow and snow banks due to the raised body.

Off-roading is a hell of a lot of fun, especially whilst driving a Bronco II. I love it when one side of my car's wheels aren't on the ground anymore because i went down an incline at an angle. But oh well, as soon as I get a much larger engine (2.9L V6 isn't enough to really move this thing) and put some more weight on the bottom, I get to really move it around. I also found out that my vehicle takes bumps at 40 mph better than a Grand Am does.
EZ_Filan Fyretracker
10-13-03, 05:06 PM
4wheel drive low is a option other then the driving mode(4wheel high) that real suvs and Pickups have that is a very low gear ratio(usually cant break 10mph) that can pull you from almost anything you can get stuck in. AWD systems lack this feature as you dont control the drivetrain. and morrel ouch on the 2.9L V6 the blazer has the 4.3L Vortec from the S10 pickups.

my idea is to make SUVs like the suburban and other supersized ones require a CDL(Commercial drivers license) to operate. think to remember is the typical driver of a super huge SUV probally came out of a BMW and they dont know how to handle a truck, or atleast not a 6500lb suburban.
Spoken like a man who has never driven a large SUV himself.
If My Mother-in-law can drive a Tahoe, it can't be that difficult.
Ever seen a highschool kid with his first SUV? The main road in front of school runs merges into the corner of the parking lot, so people like to come off that road about 60 and lay into the turn, smoking tires, all that. I used to do it all the time This kid comes through and tries it, puts his Tahoe up on 2 wheels, and almost flies over the curb trying to correct. Theres something to be said for a vehicle having a center of gravity 2 feet higher than most people are used to.
My Little sister wrecked her Escort 4 times in 3 months after her 16th Birthday.
It's not the car, Its inexperienced (and often stupid) teenage drivers.
In fact, in one accident on a straignt, flat road, she somehow managed to flip the vehicle such that it landed on its right side, and pointing back the way she came, in the opposite lane.
That's without hitting anything either.
How the hell do you flip a car on a flat, straight road without hitting anything? Trojan Horseshoes

I could see that in an Escape, seeing as those seem to be built in similar dimension to the Bronco II, but an Escort? I think it'd be able to do even that. I could see maybe going into a ditch and rolling then, but not just staying on the road.

Nope, paved road.
That was her last accident with that car. She "claimed" that the car's steering wheel would randomly jerk violently to the left from time to time, causing her to swerve off the road, overcorrect, and therfore cause that sort of accident.
Well, my parents were afraid to have their daughter drive a car that she claimed was unsafe. So... They took my mustang from me (That I had paid for) and forced me to swap cars with her.
