View Full Version : Out maneuvering your target
I played EQ mainly and i always wanted to be able to out maneuver the mob. like if i was soloing or something to be able to out " juke " him and land a backstab. I dont know how realistic it would be to have that and might be too exploitable. Think if it was possible and wasnt exploitable that it would make the game more fun or does it sound stupid?

I think it would be a good idea. It would definitely add a new depth of realism. But you also have to think about wether or not the mob could out maneuver you. If you happened by a small mob thinking it were an easy kill, it's speed may very well bend you over. Suddenly those rats in the cellar aren't such a good idea for beginners quest. And also put thought into flanking bonuses when you are fighting in a party.

It was possible in EQ. It was called circle strafing.
Basically, you moved behind the mob while turning (with the mouse) at the same time, and stabbed. It worked pretty often.

If they were a caster or someone standing in place to cast a spell or use a skill.
Outmanuevering is a huge part of PVP, but Mobs are programmed to center on and follow the center of your character, so it'll prolly be difficult to program.

It definantly doesn't sound stupid...
This is all I could find that's really relevant..

I want intensity. I want situational awareness to matter. I want what stance I'm in to matter. I want my gear to matter. I want how much I know about the encounter to matter. I want the abilities I use, depending on the encounter, to have meaning. I want the positioning of me relative to my party members to matter (for example, getting bonus flanking damage if another member of my party is positioned right). I want everyone involved in these riskier fights to have a role they need to play, and play well.
It's not really relevant to soloing per say, but it sounds like an improvement in the MMO area :).
Source for the above is credited as Aradune Mithara (aka Brad McQuaid) I think they got it from the Vanguard Message board but there's no attribution as to date etc.
I love the kind of fighting we're talking about but I also think it would be harder to do for mobs rather than people, but not impossible. It would really spice up soloing but might throw group fighting for a loop.

they quote it as - 31 October 2005 :smoke
The image of a rogue and a giant rat circle strafing each other while trying to get in an attack makes me think it might become DDR-Online.

LOL!
So funny, that I think it may happen! :-)
A while back I was on site at a contractor facility that happens to be next to Dave & Busters. So while over there at lunch I found a stand up shooter that monitors your position in real time. You duck your avatar ducks, you lean to the side your avatar leans to the side. How long until we have that technology at home?
(Forgive me if this is an old game, I don't find myself in many arcades these days)

PS2 had that snowboarding(?) game didn't they? Where a little camera went on top of your tv and monitored which way you were leaning?
Heck, I remember my NES floor pad thing from way way way back in the day, for some track & field game.

How long after such an interface comes out will there be professional body doubles, selling pre-recorded quick moves for the emulators that will become available to let people continue to play from their chairs? :-)
