View Full Version : Lawrence Poe leave Sigil
Yup, as per the title. No link as yet, though.
I have to say I'm extremely shocked and disappointed. Lawrence Poe's move to Sigil was what originally pulled me into fandom of the game.
For those of you who don't know, Lawrence Poe basically designed EQ1's spell system from the ground up. His ideas were revolutionary, as to date EQ1's spell system is one of the few parts of EQ that are still recognizable from the original game.
I'm eager to hear an official release of this even if it's just one of those "have a nice life" type things.
Well, it's been confirmed on the FoH boards by Brad...but I don't think you'd want to go there. :D
I saw Brad's post at FOH, as well as those made by John Smedley. This is an interesting development to say the least. I wonder if Poe's leaving will have an impact on game design.
Ya know, that was some pretty classy wordsmithing by John Smedley there. You have to give him props for that. It is a reality of any business, especially the tech business.
Best wishes Lawrence. I'm sure we'll be hearing from you soon. :)
Still no link? you guys suck.

Here's the Fires of Heaven thread link: http://www.fohguild.org/forums/mmorpg-general-discussion/18810-another-lead-designer-leaves-sigil.html
There's some Vanguard beta info in there from someone who was once in the beta and no longer is so be careful if you don't wanna know.

NDA breakers make me tired, especially when it is intentional. And how someone can give a "review" or their opinion of a game that hasn't even been finished yet is beyond me. That just makes no sense whatsoever. /boggle
I tend to take NDAs very seriously, but that could be because some of the ones I've been required to sign have prison terms associated with breaking them. I can see how spoiled kids living in mom's basement and paying for their internet connection with their job at blockbuster might not respect the agreement they entered into.
What I dearly hope is that the Smedleys and McQuaids of the world stand by their words and stop inviting known ****heads into betas.

Unfortunately that'll never become commonplace. Every single MMORPG I've apped to for beta has always taken the buttheads of the world instead for some reason.
One thing I think they don't do enough of is invite people with lower end systems. Like it or not that's IMPORTANT to test.

I agree. It's not just Vanguard. Across the board, lately developers have done a really crappy job tuning their games to run on low end systems. There are tons of games out there that look pretty good and run well on my system. I don't really see any reason that Vanguard, or any other game, can't have scalable options that allow the game to still look decent and perform relatively well.
It's funny to me how developers are so adamant about creating graphics engines that can't be run at full settings on today's equipment. I've read over and over how these games need to have great graphics for years to come, but come on. Not only will I have to upgrade my current computer to even run Vanguard, but I'm going to have to upgrade that computer in a year or two to see the good graphics. Does that really make sense? I don't think so.
I guess Sigil forgot to ask this question on their beta forms:
Choose either 1 or 2: Are you a butthead?
1: Yes
2: No

Except, you know, the Dev team behind the 800lb MMOG gorilla, over in the corner. ;)
The Disney World of Tooncraft?
Edit: And yes that was tongue in cheek. I cannot play Warcraft for the same reason I cannot play anime styled RPGs- Butt ugly. That's just my personal preference in art styles though, no reflection on the devs or artists. I like a more realistic flair rather than pastels and saturated landscapes.
See, though, that's the thing - you either go for a more stylised look (and make a more robust, lower-tech engine) or go for psuedo-realism, risk falling smack-bang into the middle of the Uncanny Valley (EQ2 I'm looking right at you here) and also require a high PC spec to play the game.
Personally I'll take stylised-but-playable-on-my-two-year-old-PC over bleeding edge...but I'll also take anime over live-action a lot of the time. ;)
