I only meant to semi-retire Spritewing, but it looks like I may be permanently leaving EQ. I guess the rogue gods are punishing me for my heretic ways. :-)

No, not being banned--a simple hardware upgrade! I update my lousy video card and now I crash constantly to desktop.
Fortunately it's only EQ that's having the crashing problems. After doing a little research on the EQ tech forum, it looks like many others are having the same problem after a patch in June. (probably the poison update)

It's weird how a game such as EQ causes me soooo much grief & frustration and yet I still go back to it. ...at least I did. Maybe I'll go see what this bright shiny ball in the sky is!

Went from a Voodoo based card to something else right? Search for and delete all your *.gl* (your Glide) files then try opening EQ again it should work.

Actually I think I misread your post, you can get into EQ but the game constantly crashes right? I've heard if you reinstall your DirectX (or upgrade to 7.0a) it should help, not sure about that though.

Went from a Hercules 128 Stingray to a MagicVideo TNT2 M64. (Yeah, I know, it's not the latest or best, but I'm on a budget here!)

Have pretty much tried everything in EQ's Tech Forum:
* Reformatted & reinstalled
* Updated all hardware drivers including BIOS
* Got the latest version of DirectX and updates for Windows
98 SE
* Deleted .XMI files (even though I had just reformatted)
* Deleted MSS32.DLL and downloaded newest version
* Turned off sound acceleration under DirectX
* Removed sound card from system
* Tweaked various BIOS settings
* Tried about every permutation above including exchanging
the TNT2 for another.

After doing this, I decided to go back to the original obsolete video card & set-up from before. At least it was working; albeit slow. But same problem--still crash to Windows. That got me stumped! The thought of static electricity is crossing my mind, but I thought I was grounded pretty good. And everything else works ok!

On the bright side I may get a mutiny going on the EQ boards. There's a lot of us with this problem and we're fed up and basically being ignored. (Uh-oh, I've got a sense of deja vue...) But I've got this saying/belief--if you're gonna go down, go down in a big @#%$ing blaze of glory! :-)

P.S. But before I go down in a blaze, I'm tempted to try a more modern motherboard. Aside from static, my other thought is that I've might have screwed up my BIOS when I upgraded it. Shouldn't be too much without a CPU. Guess it's back to Sam's Choice Cola instead of Diet Coke though! :-)

P.S.S. There's also some that think it may be heat related, but I'm not too sure about this. On a fresh boot-up, I still crash within the first few minutes. And every other application runs just fine. Still, it's not that expensive to try.

It sounds heat related to me, how hot is your processor running? Try opening the case and put a high powered fan to blow directly inside and then boot it, that's the easiest way to tell if it's a heat problem. If you processor fan and your videocard heatsink are working fine, heat shouldn't be an issue unless you have every slot filled and 4 IDE devices.

Heh, just saw your post Recursion. It looks like heat -was- the source of my problem. I've gone over a week without a single crash (knocking on wood) since I popped the case and turned a fan on it. So now Sprite is back into semi-retirement rather than permanent.

I'm going to be keeping an eye out for how VI modifies rogues. I noticed that they're going to make the poison uninterruptable in a upcoming patch. It still falls woefully short. But I'm thinking that a lot of rogues have stopped playing and VI is looking at what's the -least- they can do to get a sufficient number to play.

In the meantime I'm having a blast playing a shaman. Despite the "xp penalty", I'm leveling much faster than when playing a rogue. About to hit 29 here shortly. :-)
