View Full Version : Inconsiderate gives me a cold, news at 11
Last week I attended a local community college budget hearing. I hadn't covered the community college much so I try to go to the meetings as much as I can. I shook hands with this one guy who I had never met before (he is a trustee) and he immediately laughed and said "I just gave you my cold." I was so taken aback, and thought he was joking (because who could really be that big of an ? seriously).
Yesterday my throat felt as if it would catch on fire. Today is no better. ARGHH! I Hate rude people. And I really, really hate being sick. I wish something like that could be termed assault. WHAT A JERK!!
To counterbalance this rant, here's a lolcat:

Next time something like that happens, wash your hands immediately afterwards. Colds etc don't actually spread hand to hand, the germs need you to transport them to your eyes/nose/mouth. Of course if somebody sneezes and coughs right in your face, you're screwed.
I would also like to add I prefer asterisks in my censored words.
I will remember this guy, though. Next time I see him maybe I'll shake his hands and say "I just gave you norovirus! LOLOL."
I talk the talk but I can't walk the walk.
mehh if hes on the board of trustee's his address should be public knowledge right.. a few eggs to the front door might make ya feel a little better 8)
Hope ya feel better
I wish something like that could be termed assault.
Actually, it can be (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/717727.html).
Grr... as much as I would love it, I doubt my employer would allow me to sue or file charges against the jerk. I'd have to change beats and it's already taken me 8 months to learn what I know. But I'm so stinkin mad ARGHH!
EDIT: At least I'm past the sore throat stage. But I better enjoy breathing through my nose while I can.
Is he native American? Are you European? Then I'd have to call it just retribution.

Programs Administrator for the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community.

wow of all the things to get pissed off at...sick happens especially when you go out into the world and meet people. how bout anytime you have to be around people and might shake hands you eat some ColdMD and some of those zinc cough drops with vitaman c in them and not worry about it. just an idea.
I'm not mad that I'm sick, I'm mad that he did it on purpose. That's just wrong!

Kitty =><= !!!
It's possible, even likely, that this person was trying to be funny. I work with several people who are not as clever or witty as they think they are and this is just the sort of thing they pull all the time.
On separate note: If you are sick, or even think you might be sick, stay HOME! There is no need for the entire office to have the flu because you couldn't stay home for 3 days. Trust us, you're just not that important arround here.

He gave you warning should have washed!
here's his job title:
Score points for the away team (= me and my Blue Blood). Europeans: uncountable; native Americans: a few.
Although I guess the home team can have one, he did getcha good. Although you might call him a pinch-hitter. Lame...
Whatever you do, don't go near the blankets!

*eye roll* yes, let's blame everything on how terrible the Europeans were to the Native Americans 200 years ago. They have casinos, they laugh at us now.
O/T: Carry hand sanitzer gel especially if you meet and shake hands with a lot of strangers. Then, you can wash your hands very thoroughly at first chance.

I assume you've never actually been on an Indian reservation then? Native Americans are one of the poorest ethnic groups in this country.

Wow.
I know a guy who moved his business back to the Rez (his words) so he could give jobs to a few people. From the few talks I've had with him life on the reservation really sucks. Check out Demockratees if you're interested in helping out a Native American buisiness.
Alcoholism, child and spousal abuse, ethnic genocide.
Yes, we've been very kind to them, now give us our slot tokens.

Actually, I have. Have you seen the money reservations are making with their casinos?
Did you know that the tribe gets a part of it? All tribe members that meet their criteria which is usually 3 generations back. It's big business now. Thinking that whitey put them down and made them suffer is foolishness these days.
Going on and on and on how terrible people we never met were to other people we never met, well, it's about as clueless as slavery reparations. The past is over, get on with your life. Guilt for being of European descent is so 1990. It's slavery in itself to the PC mind control.

Would someone remind me of that saying about those who forget the past, and what they're doomed to do? I forget it sometimes.
Even that doesn't change the fact that not all tribes own casinos. But hey let's not let the facts get in the way of things.

Guilt or not, to not recognize what we did to the native american people and then to add furthur insult by saying "Well they have casino's now so their life is great" is pretty ridiculous. Indian reservations are not the greatest places to live. And to reiterate what Deltar said, they're def one of the poorest ethnic groups in the US right now.
There's another saying too, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I lived in Alaska for 6 years. And the Native Americans there get tons and tons of money if they have a certain percentage of Inuit blood. It was really sad but some of them were homeless even though they were getting $2,000+ a month from the dividends from their Native corporations (they'd lease land to oil companies and made tons). They'd waste it on booze and coke and hookers. Granted not all or even a majority, but enough to notice every time we went down Spenard or 4th Street.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't have the money. I think Alaskan Natives fared better than those in the lower 48, where whites took their children, isolated them from their culture and punished them if they spoke their native language (and worse).
If we hadn't invaded their culture, they wouldn't be in the situation they are in. Yes, I had nothing to do with it, and my parents had nothing to do with it. Chances are my grandparents had nothing to do with it. But you can't just throw your hands up and say "I didn't do it, why should I feel bad?" Have some compassion and recognize why it happened. re: Lilum: Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.
Back to the topic at hand
In your line of work, you really need to keep on of those little bottles of Purell hand sanitzer in your purse or laptop bag. That way after a round of gladhanding you can slip off to the restroom and get their evil politician germs (a virulent mutation of lawyer germs usually) off your hands. Just don't do it in front of them, unless you want to let them know they are scum. :)

Who said forget the past? I say stop apoligizing for something YOU yourself did not do. Did you hand them the blanket? did you force them on the Trail of Tears? Why are you apoligizing for something that occured over 100 years ago that you did not partake? It's silly and patronizing. 'Sorry your such a looser that your ancestors took our blankets and died...' that's stupid.
Native Americans have their own land, own companies and govern themselves. Now, because of that they can do as they like on that land including casinos which is big business. Stop confusing 'Last of the Mohicans' with the Indians of today.
Geez, even Germany said STFU about WWII this past year because it gets thrown in their face and they have less force in the EU and UN because of it. That only happened in the recent past, why are we so willing to keep mentally flogging ourselves when most of Americans ancestors just weren't even here yet? it's like apoligiizng for killing Christ if you were a Jew. Sorry we killed your messiah! here, take this stuff so we're even!

1) If they live on the reservation, they are not on American soil.
2) There's this nifty concept called free will and add to that self determination. People need to stop making excuses and actually work to better themselves.
3) why is it insulting to recognize the great wealth they generate by casinos? is reality that offesnive? because their great whatever got a blanket with germs on it? If that's the case, they need a Native American Bill Cosby to set them right.

Loreleli - it's a losing arguement. you yourself stated why There's this nifty concept called free will and add to that self determination. People need to stop making excuses and actually work to better themselves. and until then, it's "Sins of the father" forever. i'll personally never apologize to anyone for something my ancestors did - it doesn't make me a bad person for it, what makes me a bad person is if i say it was OK. i acknowledge that what was done was wrong, but so is making ME feel bad that i was simply BORN.
Thirty Days starts a new season on Tuesday, one of the episodes this year has Spurloc spending 30 days on a reservation.
I will lay $20 he comes out an alcoholic!!
