View Full Version : Patch Day!
My oldest son just got the dreaded "Servers Down for Maintenance" for the first time in his life. He's pissed and I'm all nostalgic and *#&$! Ah MMOs. ;) :kordesh

I'd LOL if I wasn't so pissed off that EQ2 has been down all day as well as the web site and station.com so I've no clue WHAT is going on...and yes it IS my day off and i was planning on playing ALL day....<grumble grumble>
My kiddo plays Clone Wars Adventures, so something must be up.
Amazon Web Service servers have been having seizures all day, don't know if SOE is affected by that. :p
It's just especially funny that he's been amped... today was a half day before spring vacation. He's been looking forward to a good gaming session.
Ctrl+Alt+Del is hosted on their servers too and they arent up either. Yay server downs!
Different problems, looks like. Amazon says their issue is a US east coast thing, but Sony's outage is worldwide. It's PSN, too, not just SOE.

All SOE sites have:
Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

You can thank Anon for that, btw (at least the PSN side of things)... they're a bit pissy about the Geohot situation, and have been going nuts on Sony for a couple days. Dunno if it's bleeding over into SOE, but rather than prove a point to Sony, I'd say they're just pissing off the gamers at this point... I'm just glad I could get Portal 2 registered before PSN went to crap.

Huh?
Long explanation... here's a link: http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/11/sony-and-geohot-settle-out-of-court/
Long story short: Guy jailbreaks the PS3 (So you can install Linux on it! And nothing else... :ontome) which blasts the door wide open for potentially pirating games on the PS3, Sony goes after him. Hardcore. And they went after anybody else involved as well (Lots of people were posting the code to do it on youtube videos, websites, twitter, etc. afterwards in protest)
Recently they settled out of court, and GeoHot agreed to not pursue another jailbreak of any Sony product... ever, among other things. Due to this, Anon has been going nuts on Sony, PSN outages being one of the results.

Sorry, Velvetrose, but that's not quite the right story.
Geohot announced he was going to toy with the PS3. Sony removes OtherOs capabilities from all PS3s, because 'hackers'. People using their PS3 now have to pick between using the OtherOs ability it was sold as having, or patching and playing multiplayer games. They could not do both. Geohot and others got really mad, and decided to publish all of their research. Some third parties used that research to allow people to play pirated games.
Hotz original hacking of the PS3 would have been useful to some colleges, maybe the military branches that have PS3 super-computers. But Sony over-reacted and panicked. It was a stupid move to sue someone for hacking on a device they own. Hotz wasn't, far as I read, cheating in any games, breaking into any thing at Sony's end. He was just tinkering with the PS3 to get more power out of it (OtherOS disabled one of the stream processers).
Now, the case is such that if you want to tinker with the PS3, and you want to run your own code on it, you need to have that code look just like a game. So, you need certain encryption keys. Strange that, no one had gone after those keys for 5 years, but the instant OtherOS gets removed people started looking for them. And found them. And published them. And got Sony to retweet them.
Sony denies that it is your right to use the device you bought from them. As far as they are concerned, the PS3 runs their BIOS no matter what, and if you change that you are breaking their copyright.
Now, Anon hacking Sony is their idea of retaliation. Form your own opinions on that.

And MY opinion is freaken great...take your little battle someplace ELSE and don't screw with MY game.
I Still feel like Sony or whom ever else it is has the right to their programs etc. What you buy is the right to use said programs...you dont OWN them

uhhhhhhhhhh.... I don't exactly agree.
I'm not really for piracy nor really against it. I'm in the greyish area. But i'm not really going to delve into that debate. But one thing I am for piracy on (or rather some of its arguments) is the right to "hack" your console.
If you buy something, I don't care what kind of property is included inside the thing, it should be yours. If you want to buy a ps3 and make it into a system to play nintendo games on, you should be within your right to. But doing so must also have NO effect on other ps3 owners or users.
But hey, if sony wants to say that if you do hack/break your ps3 you can't use their network functionality or it disables other features than that is fine with me, but to be told you can't do ANYTHING to it, is wrong in my opinion
Now sharing the information on HOW you hacked/broke your system is a little more of a grey area, but I wouldn't say illegal or grounds for litigation against you.

For the Devi's advocate kind of thing, it is yours, you own it, but if you hack it you cannot play on the PSN (which they own). They are not stopping you from hacking it (they didn't want the code out there) but hey who would.
That aside I truly agree that if you buy it, it is yours! Requiring updates that remove features that were included is BS.
So is this why I still can't log on to PSN?
Yep. Someone cracked PSN wide open, and Sony pulled the whole thing down to restore from backups and close the holes.

So, yeah...
Keep an eye on your account activity, people.
What's really annoying about this is I JUST got a new card due to some sort of identity theft issue (Bank caught it automatically on their end, I didn't lose any money).
I just finished updating all of my accounts with new CC info, and now I have to go back and do that all over again...

Ditto...
Oh and now thanks to ...as I guess SOME of you feel is their right...the buttheads who decided to hack SOE...
We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).
