What does everyone think about an old world only server? Old world + Hate/Fear/Air, preferably in their original form. Back before Sony automated the game so bad. There is a thread going at the station: boards.station.sony.com/u...56670.html

With enough support maybe they can take the discord server and remove PvP from it for us. Would be the easiest way to make this happen, and as Sony likes to do, they could finish the server with old world planes at a later time.

While as a distraction, it might prove interesting, the end result would have people wanting more methinks. The primary reason EQ has been so successful this long is due to expansions, bigger, better, badder lewt, and more things to do, oh... and the incredible addictive nature of combining a chatroom into a stress relief clinic.

It would be great to start on that as a new player to EQ though, then the overwhelming content available is condensed immensely, not to mention people will actually learn to walk from zone to zone again instead of port, port, there.

I donno, just don't see it happening on a long term basis, once the high time players power to 50 in a week or two and get a few raids in, the whole retro feel will wear off for alot in my opinion.

I could undoubtedly be wrong though.

Am I missing something here? You are asking Sony to set up a server that can be played with the standard Classic EQ which up until recently was downloadable free (maybe still is?) and any new players on that server would not have any reason to buy the expansions that give Sony money? What is in it for Sony?

I have always felt that Sony should never have introduced Teleporting other than 'gate' to bind point because it destroys the whole fun of epic journeys across continents. I might even support some classes being able to port to Rings, Spires etc. as long as they have walked there previously. Even Luclin could have refused to let you port to somewhere unless you had picked up a no-drop token from there previously. Unfortunately there is no way to remove something people have paid to have so we are stuck with it. I cannot see Sony supporting a server that brings in no revenue yet still costs money to run, more's the pity.

I think there could be a demand for this, although certain things may need to be streamlined and maybe an additional incentive or twist is needed for the server.
Some thoughts when I was thinking of an idea for a new server;
Double (Or triple) the exp.
All expansions but Luclin, Pop and Ldon. Maybe exception of keeping nexus/bazaar, Shadowhaven in.(also possibiliy of locking zones till certain % of server reaches x level)
Wizzies can port to all newbie hunting grounds at level 10. Druids port to outside where dungeons are.
All items are put on a common loot table. And also made as a random loot in a zone its in.
10 x the exp given for quests, with restriction of only being able to do a quest once.
Pvp, groups only in arenas. Maybe with some perk to pvp.
Items with charges, Lore, with maybe scaled by level. Put these on places where there are "camps".
For example, an orc camp instead of a random snake in the zone. (examples of nukes, gate, invis, bind, procs, charms as effects)
Maybe a class regulating balance, ie you join server depending on balance of all other classes will determine what classes you can choose.
Buffing uses no mana to reduce downtime.
Duration on buffs increases on focus items by 25%, 50% and 75%. With the drops of focus items being in dungeons.(Maybe openings too when they come in)
Rogues, Wizards, Clerics crit from lvl 11.
No ability to shout.
Trivial loot code apart from mobs where they drop tradeskill items.
Tradeskill items drop common.
A tradeskill npc per city who gives tradeskill containers out free, and somehow guides in tradeskills.
At night, half the mobs turn undead in newbie hunting zones.
Coffins free to buy.
Merchants don't sell food/water. You get 20 intial food/water. After that you can buy from other players. Or you can make your own.
All items droppable.
Lvl 50 cap intially.
When a certain percentage of the server are lvl 45, then zones opened up.
Ability to leave messages offline on this server to people to reinforce community.
Casino opened up every Saturday/Sunday with 25pp bets, possibility of gem rewards, spells, opening scrolls and charms scaled from hp(10-100), basic resists, stat ones, and maybe rare ones with see invis, lev and Eb,
Key parts made common drops.
Maybe make server last 3 months before reset also.
Also possibly no guilds. Or put in a random guild when you start a character or a server based channel again to reinforce community and regulate guilds.
Snare/Slow maxed at 2 min duration.
One char per account.
Would want a way of crippling 2 botters, but don't there is a way.
But I wrote that a long time ago and probably would require too much programming and would verge too much away from the old world nostalgia that is wanted.

??! how could you possibly go x number of years playing eq without even hearing about the concept of monthly fees?

Yes, you can download the program for free. Just like you can download all the expansions for free with the patcher, or how you can install it on as many computers as you want without Sony caring. But you have to have an account to do anything with it, as Chiop said.

Actually, they'd probably prefer that you install it as many times as possible. More likely to get someone interested (and paying monthly fees to them) that way. I'm honestly surprised they haven't started selling the CDs much cheaper (almost nothing), though it's still fairly cheap when you figure in the month of playtime too. -------------------------
