if your still a straggler and running windows95
Quote: Does this mean that win 95 users must upgrraded their entire operating system?
Pretty much, yes.
We won't officially be supporting Windows 95 anymore. Heck, Microsoft isn't even supporting it anymore…
The main reason for this is because Windows 95 won't support our efforts to localize the game. Once we complete our localization work, people using Windows 95 won't have the code needed to translate the text. This will probably lead to all sorts of badness, not the least of which would be that Win 95 users might not even be able to see any chat at all.
This is another case where it might indeed work, but we can't promise it will.

I hope they aren't introducing peer to peer communication into the game....

Good. it'll help people mitigate off an operating system that is 5 (win95 sp2, in 98, win 98sp2, win me, win xp) revisions too old. Win95 was nice in concept but it's taken till win2k to make the interface, etc, top quality. --------------------------

I'm a network admin, I support NetWare and Linux servers, NT and 2000 servers and workstations. I have a pentium II 450 at home running 95 and have plenty of access to any OS I want. I've tested DX8 and see no reason to "side"grade (or whatever) to some Microsoft inflation OS. If Luclin doesn't run then I'll install 2000. I'm hoping the world will wake up from this nightmare created by the microserfs and start useing Linux or something else thats not quit the bloatware that Bill is pooping.

Blah blah blah.
I work at a computer store and I hear this all the time. Wake me when another operating system allows you to install 90% of the software and hardware that's out on the planet, and then is easy enough for my Dad to install.

I still prefer Win 98 2nd edition due to how stable it is. From what I've heard about XP, it isn't totally stable yet. When it is, I'll upgrade. Lalian Viajante

I've been using XP since it released to OEM's, and it's by far the best operating system MS has put out to date.

The worst part about XP is for those of us who own multiple computers. Between my girlfriend and I we own 5. Assuming I upgrade 4 of them to XP @ $199/computer, that's over $800 (after tax) just on Operating System software!

I'd say go get the pirated version of XP that has no activation then send MS $300 and call it even

I would like to point out that there is no way to cancel your account if you are running Win95 unless you buy a copy of Win98. Does anyone else think that is a tad bit crazy, or is it just me? In order to cancel your account, you have to log into EQ, yet if you are running Win95 you will have to go buy a copy of Win98 in order to log into EQ to cancel your account. Also, using DirectX 8.0a in order to run EQ on Win95 is a breach of the end license user aggreement since DirectX 8.0a is unsupported software according to Verant. So... it's basically a "damned if I do, damned if I don't" situtation.
Updating a game is fine and dandy, but there is a name for an expansion that exceeds the system requirements of the original game, it's called sequal. Having add-ons that do not share the same system requirements as the base game is idiotic, especially when one of those requirements is the operating system that the game runs on. Now, changing the system requirements of the base game even if you do not buy the add-on is beyond idiotic, it's pretty close to illegal since EQ is advertised as supporting Win95 on the box itself. You can't sell someone a car, and then after they buy it tell them, "Oh, yeah it says that it runs on gasoline but really it's a diesel.". Sbik Swashbucklugget

Actually Sbik, I'm pretty sure it's possible to cancel accounts over the phone.

I have DX8a. EQ works under it. If I were so inclined, I could log in and they'd never find out about it, so screw 'em. No Guide/GM is ever going to hassle you about what version of DirectX you have, because they have no way of knowing.

The only problem they will have is for all those boxed collections still out there on the shelves. Other than that, they are selling you the service each month, with the right to terminate the service at their discretion. Looks like thier discretion was to terminate all you Win95 users.I'm sure there will be a problem over someone buying the trilogy collection for win95, and it not working. Verant better make some labels quick with (WIN98 REQUIRED!) for those boxes... 5 cents a label....vs buying back boxes at 40 bucks each.... I know I'd be UPSing some labels out to my retailers ASAP.
