As a rabid baseball fan I have been up in arms over the latest information coming out about steroids in baseball and how the Players Union and the commisionner want to "avert their gaze" and pretend it isn't happening. I'm absolutely livid.

Today John McCain told the two most loathed men in MLB administration "@#%$ You" in so many words. Under the nervous eye of Commish Selig, Players Union Mafioso Don Fehr said in so many words, "we're doing things our way at our pace, what the dillio?" after being requested to adopt a steroid policy similar to the NFL.

McCain responds-

"Your failure to commit to addressing this issue straight on and immediately will motivate this committee to search for legislative remedies. I don't know what they are. But I can tell you, and the players you represent, the status quo is not acceptable. And we will have to act in some way unless the major league players' union acts in the affirmative and rapid fashion."

Summation: you sir have given baseball a legitimacy problem, deal with or we will.

And the Democrats agree!

"The union's wrong, here. Baseball is the national pastime, but it's the repository of the values of this country. There's something simply un-American about this. This is about values, about culture, it's about who we define ourselves to be.'' - Senator Joe Biden

Steroids suck. They ruin the game. I don't want to spend $50 a seat to watch genetic mutants. I want pure athletes.

This initial congressional intervention is going to shake a lot of trees and I hope all the idiots fall. Zero tolerance, nothing less is acceptable.

@#%$ @#%$ @#%$ I hate cheaters at the professional level.

Edit: Mr. McCain may get a write in vote for this.

This is a great bipartisan issue. Both sides are going to jump on this, because they know Joe Sixpack doesn't want to see roid monsters running rampant. I think they need an investigation, and if they find anything, roll back any hitting record to the original holder.

The fact that ticket prices are so high these days make me just want to give up on the whole instution altogether.

Of course, I'm not a hardcore baseball fan at all, but I love the tradition of the game in the US...

Quote:``Any player is free to go to his own physician and request a test for anything,'' he said. ``When, however, a player is asked to take a drug test by a third party, particularly a member of the media, there is an inherent element of coercion in the request. Notwithstanding the player's right to say no, he fully understands, as does the reporter making the inquiry, that a refusal will be taken by many as suggesting the player fears the result, even though no such inference fairly should be drawn. In addition, acceding to the request will put pressure on other players to do the same thing.''

This is such a load of crap. I just don't get it. I've never understood what the big deal is about random testing. It's simple isn't it?

If you haven't taken steroids, you have nothing to fear about being tested.

Do steroid tests have a chance of giving false positives or something?

Privacy my ass I say. If you're playing it straight, why would you say no?

Yes, steroid tests have a chance of giving a false positive. Just like drug tests, or HIV tests. All of these things have a chance of a false positive.

Oh, and to continue your logic: If you don't have anything to hide, why do you mind if we watch you 24/7?

haha, that's so not the same logic.

Yeah, I have sex with my wife regularly...do I want the world to see it? Please.

This is something that is illegal, easy to test for, and doesn't require watching anyone.

Edit: I wasn't fiinished... If you're going to rake in this kind of cash for playing a game, the very @#%$ least you can do is accept random drug testing. HaraEdited by: DarkOmen42 at: 3/12/04 4:05 am

The union is way too powerful.

Personally, I was already fed up with the ridiculous disparity between team's salaries and this steroid thing is just icing on the cake.

I really like baseball and my Pirates, but the sport is becoming a joke. I could have told you months ago that my team had no shot of winning the World Series this year, and I can 100% guarantee you it won't happen in the next 5 years either. How do you compete with teams that can pay their players FIVE times what your players are payed (or three times for teams like the Red Sox)?

Err, not to sound too harsh on any particular fans of the big money teams (Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Braves, etc). After all, it's not the fans fault the game is like it is.

Baseball just needs a serious slap in the face. First deal with this steroid nonsense, then try and deal with the underlying problems in the game. At this point I don't care if there is an equal salary cap for all teams, I just want it to at the very least be competitive. It can only be a good thing for the fans of baseball as a whole. Let the Yankees have twice my payroll, but not FIVE TIMES IT.

Well in the Sox defense, you must understand why they're in the pissing match they're in. You cannot win the division against the Yankees without investing some cash. Ever dollar we spend, Steinbrenner spends three.

Yes it's perpetuating the cycle, but it can't really be reversed unless solid salary caps are instilled (I admire how the NFL has handled this). The MLB "luxury tax" only funds the @#%$ MLBPA .

Anyhow, I agree, the salary disparities in the game are horrible. I also agree that the union has been counterproductive for the sport for the last decade.

I'm hoping this is the beginning of the end of the MLBPA tyranny. Regime Change!
