Quote:A spokesman for the Kingdom Ernest Kizza told the BBC they are seeking £3trillion ($5,500bn).

Mr Kizza said they will present written evidence at the International Court in the Hague to prove their case.

He also said that the UK colonial authorities took their land and gave it to a rival kingdom.

Curious inconsistancies here:
Quote:The present king of Bunyoro, Solomon Iguru, wants compensation of nearly £3 billion (US $5.55 billion)
Quote:A spokesman for the Kingdom Ernest Kizza told the BBC they are seeking £3trillion ($5,500bn).

He probably said "3 bazillion-trillion dollars" and the reporters shrugged their shoulders and wrote something.

I can just picture when they come out with CIVILIZATION IV

If, somehow, some puny civilization manages to survive your conquering and taking their lands; centuries down the road they will use all their countries independent wealth to hire or train thousands of Super-Lawyers to eradicate your countries economy.

Cid Meyers will now add "Lawsuit Victory" to the possible ways to win the game.

They use commas in place of decimal places in england. I am a Sensei and a Transcendant.
Not that it means anything anymore.

once anyone talk about sue you get prenn on the thread

at least this time no one said anything about the MacDonald coffee lady ....OOPS

The woman got THIRD DEGREE BURNS over a good part of her body. Can we stop propping the coffee lady up as an example of frivolous lawsuits?

Besides, it's much more entertaining to mock the fatties trying to sue McD's. Fatty McGreasewagon is trying to blame his or her carb addiction on the evil fast food companies.

i didn't mean to talk about her as an example , prenn just go ape @#%$ whenever she is mentioned anyway

If she wasn't obese from eating at McDonalds she would have sustained burns on a much smaller body.

In Australia, she MIGHT have wona few thousand. Certainly not the gazillion dollars she received because she was too dumb to realise coffee is served hot.

Sheesh! 10 years on and it still makes the rounds.

What do you mean about the U.S suing Canada? The U.K I could see, but Canada? We never ruled them. Sure we kicked their a#@ in war, but we didn't impose our leadership afterwards.

No we don't usually. The commas are just to break up large numbers to make them easier to read. Example £1,000,000 instead of £1000000.

Actually, since they add "u"s to various words like Honor and Color, its known as a Millioun over there.

Something that should be pointed out is that the jury award in this case was reduced substantially. If I recall, it ended up at around $50k, which is still way more than she deserved, but not the "gazillions" that people always think she got.

Five TRILLION dollars!

Sorry, I don't think that the rightful reparations could POSSIBLY be that high.

Plus, if every nation that ever was conquered/colonized during the Imperialistic period, or prior, were to sue for reparations and win, it would open up HUGE cans of worms with the possibility of sparking wars worldwide. (Back In Black)

My apologies. Usually I see english posters online using '5,59" for 5.59, and so on. Not very uncommonly either. Perhaps it's more of a trait in the older (35+) generations?

Looking at the number, I don't know the current conversion rate of euros to dollars, but you're probably right.

The Euro is worth about $1.20 right now.

Actually all the UK uses the notation:

1,000,000.00

Whereas many mainland European countries use the notation:

1.000.000,00

Regardless of which, I presume Billion and Trillion are still different numbers. The quotes are unchanged and show confusion on the part of the reporters, even if you ignore the bracketed portions.

Meddik

In the US, a Billion is 1,000,000,000

In the UK, a Billion is 1,000,000,000,000

Quote:billion

adj : (U.S.) denoting a quantity consisting of one thousand million items or units; (Britain) denoting a quantity consisting of one million million items or units [syn: a billion] n 1: (in Britain) the number that is represented as a one followed by 12 zeros [syn: one million million, 1000000000000] 2: (in the United States) the number that is represented as a one followed by 9 zeros [syn: one thousand million, 1000000000]

Was. We changed to the American version quite a while ago. I don't know exactly when, around 15 years ago I think.

EZ_Fablar

Nope, Meddik is correct, except for relating to finace. FOr financial terms (so for this article actually) a billion is 10^9, whereas for everything else a billion is 10^12.
HOWEVER, seeing as you only ever use billion for finance really, colloqually a billion is now 10^9 in UK as well. The language changes, slowly but surely

You wish lol....try reading some history of the war of 1812.
Although it was a draw; canada / britain had more victories.

edit - before its mentioned - yes yes, I know you'd win now.

1812 was a war with Great Britain, not canada. When it began, Canada was just a collection of british provinces, not even a coherent political entity on its own. Trojan Horseshoes
