DAYTON, Tenn. - The county that was the site of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" over the teaching of evolution is asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.
The Rhea County commissioners approved the request 8-0 Tuesday.
Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.
"We need to keep them out of here," Fugate said.
The vote was denounced by Matt Nevels, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
"That is the most farfetched idea put forth by any kind of public official," Nevels said. "I'm outraged."
Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy laws as a violation of adults' privacy.
Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality. The trial became the subject of the play and movie "Inherit the Wind."
In 2002, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of a Bible class in the public schools.

good god.
I grew up in Chattanooga, which isn't terribly far south of that area...however, Chatt is a cool city, and I'll probably end up back there someday....anyway, this pisses me off to no end.
Yeah, most of TN probably deserves the stereotypes that the media perpetuates, and this is a fine example. For a while now the only news I see out of TN is whacko-@#%$ like this...ugh. Makes me sick.
I think the thing I saw before this was the stupid lady who was sueing Janet Jackson for mental damages after she flashed a boob during the Super Bowl...@#%$ idiots.
I think Chattanooga and Nashville should secede. (not a fan of Knoxville or the Vols, nor Memphis really)

Crap like this not only reflects poorly on Tenn., but also on the entire South.
Humanity can really suck sometimes.

Can we get an ordinance going, saying it's a crime against nature to be that stupid; and have them all executed immediately?

Hey hey hey... watch it, I grew up in Knoxville... as did 2 other people on this board that I know of... we might get offended.:"> Actually, we're more likely to agree with you. I hated Knoxville... so did they. Its a miserable hellhole of a city with the crappiest monument ever built. Screw Knoxville and every tortured soul that lies therein! Vive le D.C.!!

hahah. You had me worried there for a minute.
I'm so glad to live in moderate Kansas. Do you think they would let Fred Phelps move to town? If you aren't familiar with the glorious rev. here's his site godhatesfags.com . I feel dirty just looking at his site.
yet you just helped spread his lies and propaganda by posting the link..
/boggle
I'm assuming people here are smart enough to know that the man is an idiot. He's actually pretty famous, among those of his ilk. He's been on a few national news magazine shows, and talk shows. The man is a complete idiot.
New Hampshire ran him out of town when he came to protest our gay bishop being inducted. Pretty funny how relatively small his protest was.
Assuming the general public is smart enough to take care of themselves is generally considered a "conservative" viewpoint. I am suprised at you Lilum..
FYI, i was just teasing you about the link..
Haha, he has it in Spanish, too! How thoughtful of him!
How can you have something that is naturally occuring in nature be declared unnatural? I've always wondered about that when people call something unnatural. As a wise man once said: You keep using that word but I don't think it means what you think it does.
If you watched enough Daily Show, you'd know there's no such thing as gay penguins.

Koru:
Because they are ignorant cretins who have no clue about science and nature. Being gay isn't natural to many conservative religious types. They believe it's a choice, and therefore a sin.
Days like this I'm ashamed that I grew up in TN...but honestly, I PROMISE I didn't grow up in that area....just about 30 miles south =P
Chattanooga is a billion times less stupid.
What about those who think its a choice and think its ok?

Having been to Rhea County
Everything in that news article is exactly how that place is
They are the biggest dumb @#%$ on the planet
Crimes against nature, eh? I can certainly see how nature is being harmed by this activity. In fact, they should make a nationwide campaign to help end this nature destroying practice. I've even thought up of a slogan: "Give a hoot, don't suck c*ck."

Ya, I'm sure homosexuals choose to be that way. They must wake up one morning and decide, "Hey, I think I want to be gay because I want to live a life in which I'm discriminated against all the time!!". I'm sure they couldn't be born that way, genetics has nothing to do with it...

Wow, you live in SD? I worked there for a couple years, though I lived in Chatt. We just moved to VA last year.
I worked in the Soddy Daisy Industrial Park for a Software Dev company... The industrial park is the one on that long-ass road that turns into 153 and goes up to Walmart/McDonalds/etc the other way.
