Lucky ☆ Star's story portrays the lives of several school girls attending a Japanese high school with a very loose humor tone. The main heroine is Konata Izumi, an athletic and intelligent girl who, despite these attributes, is not in a sports club, and her grades remain low. Her laziness at school is due to her love for anime and video games, and is not interested in much else. The serialization began with the four main characters in their first year of high school: Konata Izumi, Kagami Hiiragi, Tsukasa Hiiragi, and Miyuki Takara. As the story progresses, they move onto their second and third year.
A pentagram in the title?!?! Is it about otaku schoolgirls that try and summon Cthulu?!?!?! I'm there!
That's a star! Though, I wouldn't put it past Izumi to summon Cthulu.
I watched it four times now. Man, I'm obessed! I absolutely love the goofy faces they make. And Izumi's long blue hair is great! It goes down to her ankles! She's clearly my favorite already. Maybe I should pick up the manga, I've heard loads about it for a long time, but I never got around to buying it. I think I'll just be patient and watch the show so as not to spoil myself and lessen the enjoyment of the anime, then read it afterwards.
it was speed-subbed though, they put notes up that the next episode would be a little better, i.e.: adding in the op translation... but eh, it was good enough imo, though i would need another sub to compare.
Sleeping Forest translated a bit of the manga (only 4 chapters) and the anime is very faithful. So they could do it fast.
After watching the 1st, ep.. was cool but "Hitohira" killed it in every way possible.
I could have sworn I replied to this already. Well, farewell post lost to the black hole of the internet! EDIT: So I DID reply to it already. In a different thread. *bonk*
Anyway, I didn't like Hitohira much. I'm more of a Tsundere type than I am of the shy type. I do like the shy girls, but Hitohira was overkill. Shy to the point of being unable to speak when there are more than two people present?! Sorry, too much for me! I like the shy girls who get embarassed when they stand out or do something out of the ordinary, but not that!
But the show itself was good for it's target audience.

I like both, don't get me wrong, just the presentation and impact was a lot greater from Hitohira even without the huge Buzz the Lucky star created, every board I go to, non-anime one. Had a thread about Lucky Star, with youtube link in it. ;p Different strokes...
Well I got confused. Suzuka made a similar comment in the Spring 2007 thread, and I responded there. I did not expect he would make another comment in a different thread, so I thought something happened to it. Oops.
Anyway, I watched Lucky Star. And to be honest, I was quite a bit underwhelmed. The OP brought my hopes really high. I won't say it failed at delivering, but it was far from what I expected.
I actually do have quite a bit of complaints. I'll draw parallels between this and Azumanga Daioh because they are both 4koma based shows. First, there's little to no transition between segments. It's just hopping from place to place, following the manga too faithfully where it should be less faithful, and expanding where it should be more faithful.
I'll use the opening scene for example, where they were talking about how to eat various foods. The original scene was only about eating the chocolate donut Konota had. They expanded it to include all sorts of various foods, which really was not that funny. It sounded like everyday chatting when you're bored, to kill time. I found it mildly amusing that they were talking so seriously about the subject, but that's all. So they turned a 1 minute scene into a 5 minute scene.
However, in the latter part of the show, they were jumping from scene to scene. Nothing to transition, like a quick talk saying they are going to visit their sick friend, and the like. So it felt all over the place with no coherence. In Azumanga Daioh, there was a lot of these type of "buffers" with a break in between (splitting each episode into two story arcs) to aid the humor and coherence.
And the character designs are good for what they are, because it's faithful to the original designs. However, it's obvious that the show has a very small budget compared to many of their other shows. It's not bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not up to par from what I expect from Kyoto Animation. The show doesn't need great animation, and would have worked just fine as-is, if it were not for the confusing story direction.
All in all, I just am disappointed, for now.
EDIT: Just to expand on this, I'm just disappointed in what it could have been, not what it is. It's just different from what I expected, and it's not bad. I enjoyed it, I'm just disappointed that it was more of a regular show, than a really special show like Suzumiya Haruhi was. So I'll lower my expectations, and enjoy it normally.
Ah. Well that's too bad. The OP was awesome, but I really didn't like AzuDai because of its format. If LuckyStar work in the same general way them I'm not gonna enjoy it.
I was checking out ANN and read this new blurb so I figured I'd post it here:
Kyoto Animation posted a notice on its website that says it decided to replace Yutaka Yamamoto as director of the Lucky Star moe comedy television series with Yasuhiro Takemoto due to performance issues. Yamamoto's last episode, episode 4, has just aired on April 29, while episode 5 is still scheduled to run on May 6 with Takemoto directing.
The new director Takemoto helmed Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu and both Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid television and video projects. The man he replaces, Yamamoto, has been an episode director on a number of series including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Air, and Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (the last project under Takemoto), but Lucky Star was his first job as series director. Yamamoto's last project before Lucky Star was the 2006 television version of Kanon. His website's contents have been removed with only a short notice in their place.
Yeah, I found this memo interesting. One thing people should realize is that the manga itself is largely the same as what you see in the anime. So if you didn't like the content itself, it won't improve much.
What should improve is how he handles everything. Even to an amateur like me, the flaws with the show are exceedingly obvious. I've gone over a bit of the issues in this post. Which were mostly directing issues.
The show would have been far better were those issues resolved. What suprises me, however, is that the change came so late. Perhaps they scrapped the rest of the episodes already created and made this show a priority rush job. Because most of the time, shows are approximately halfway done before the first episode even airs.
Nevertheless, I'll be interested in seeing what kind of change comes with episode five.
Hyper-stylized cross-shaded eyes with trillinear shadow mapping.
You know, pretty eyes.
I think one thing AzuDiaoh 'got' that LS missed is, when the story does a random jump, there was almost allways a 'flash screen' denoting the change. With no such device, LS is severely jarring.
That, and when there's like 5 separate 4komas that occur one after another, instead of just jumping to each one in a succession, make it a full scene as a full event. (see: when tsundere was sick.)
Is there a difference between that OP and the one I linked? I know people have been changing the music for it, is that what the link is? The OP with different music, I mean?
Also, Ishikei from the circle, Nise MIDI doronokai, made a drawing of Kagami. It's made it's rounds quite a bit already, but I'm so impressed with the skill and the overall charm of the image that I can't help but share it.
I can't really link to his site because this is probably the only non-pornographic one he made, and the pornographic ones are very questionable to most people's morals. That being said,
While I don't catch most of the ed references due to it being music and all but I rather enjoy being able to brag (to myself, anyway) for being able to catch the more old-school references. The later episodes are better than the earlier, and its been improving each episode almost without fail.
I'm particularly looking forward to episode 6 for the direction change.
was i the only one thinking bad thoughts when she said she pushes and pulls the ice cream at the same time and did a little hand motion to emphasize?
