FASFA HELP!
Reply With Quote   #1

Heya guys. I need some help. Im applying for Financial aid. But I tried applying online through FASFA.ed.gov. But I keep getting BottledNecked. They want my Parents tax and financial info. But I don't speak to my parents and haven't for 4 years and haven't lived with them for that long as well.

Is there anyway to apply online without having to give tax and financial info on your parents? I cant skip that process.

Any info on this would be great. Thanks guys.

If you have lived on your own for a while, i think you can file as an emancipated minor, there might be some legal red tape to go through.

If you are living with someone other than your parents, and they are a legal guardian, you may have to list them.

I'd talk to a guidance councellor, see if they can help. Trojan Horseshoes

Meddik is correct, they are wanting your legal guardians tax info. How old are ya? After a certain age, you just skip that part. But if you arent old enough, and live alone, contact the financial aid office at the college you are applying to and explain the situation to them. Not sure how it is where you live, but for me going to the University of Memphis the FAFSA stuff was the worst part.

Always a long line at the FA office, so if they say there is no appointments right now (good possibility) go EARLY, like an hour before they open. Trust me, that hour of waiting is a lot better than waiting 3 behind people. Not to mention, the sad truth is that a lot of it depends on the FA advisor, and if you go after they have had some people cuss them out a few times, there is a possibility that thier bad mood will reflect on your application (very small remote possibility, but a possibility none the less). Good luck!

Sorry guys. Im 20 years of age. Is it possible to leave the parents info on the FASFA Blank? im using FASFA.ed.gov website. It wont allow me to skip it. I dont have a car, so using it on the website is a great way to submit it.

Ok, lets answer these questions

Who is your legal guardian?

Has this person paid for anything over the past year that would allow them to use you on their taxes?

If the answer is yes to both then you will need to have their tax info to submit your fasfa.

Now, if they did not and have not then you really need to go to the FA office or get their number and call them. They may also have a website where you can email them questions to answer for you.

Even if you live on your own and your parents don't help support you at all, when filling out the FAFSA you still have to list them unless:
1)You were born before 1-1-81
2) You are an orphan or a ward of the state
3)You are a Veteran
4)You are married
5)You have children or other dependents

As far as I know, unless you can work something out individually with the particular institute you apply to, you must meet one of the exemptions to avoid filling out info on your parents.

In short, no. I was in a similar situation when I was still a minor, and if you want to apply online you're gonna have to provide the information they ask you until you are 24 yrs of age. If you are legally emancipated, you won't need your parents information, but I don't believe that facilitates that online application process. If you leave any required information blank, your form will be deemed incomplete and you'll only be wasting time for them to send you notices afterwards telling you that your form lacks required information. (And there are some financial aid that's on a first come first serve basis, so omitting required information only hurts yourself.)

If I remember correctly, you have the option to mail in your application.
