Pat Summerall gets liver transplant

So Pat Summerall is getting a liver transplant. You can read the story by following this link.

Quote:Summerall is a recovering alcoholic who was convinced by friends in 1992 to enter the Betty Ford Treatment Center in California. His wife, Cheri, told The Dallas Morning News that he accepted that his past alcohol abuse is the reason he is in the hospital now.

I find this troublesome. I know it says they did tests to find the best transplantee, but I find it difficult to believe that the hospital couldn't have found a better recipient. I'm sorry, but 73-year-old men who destroyed their liver from drinking probably should be at the back of the line. There are a lot of kids and younger people who desperately need transplants, for reasons beyond their control. This is also not to mention that younger people have a better survival rate than older people when it comes to transplants.

Happens all the time. People with clout and money get transplants faster. They also get to adopt kids much faster, get better medical treatment, live longer, get better educations, etc ad nauseum...it all sucks harshly, but money does make the world go around, doesn't it?

Well it makes America go 'round anyway.

However, do we know how long he's waited?

This was a hot topic in the early 90's because Larry Hagman and David Crosby both got pushed through the waiting lists and got liver transplants despite their alcoholic pasts. This is the first story I've heard in a while though.

There is nothing to indicate that he was favored due to his celebrity or money. The problem I have is that the very elderly seem to be favored for things like this. And I also find it odd that there is no disqualification, or bump down the list, for having caused the problem yourself. It seems like kind of a backward system for determining who gets replacement organs.
