How do you handle stress?
Reply With Quote   #1

Here lately it seems that every thing that I normally turn to, to take my mind off of things has a form of stress with it.

Friends, women (normally the reason of the stress hehe), work, money, bills everything is starting to pile up.

Since Im having to rely on myself to take my mind off of things (and no just THAT wont work, get your mind outta the gutter), I turn to the safehouse to find out what everyone else does. Video games, movies, working out, punting small woodland creatures, beating up little old ladies.. what do ya do?

Not really looking for an "answer" per se, just rambling, posting to take my mind off of stuff heh. So what are your trade secrets to relax and let loose when you want to strangle someone who just says "hi" because of your constant bad mood?

I drink away my problems.

jk...I have hobbies....lots and lots of hobbies. drawing, sculpting, playing bass. I ride my motorcycle. I joined a fraternity about 6months ago...which both adds to and takes away from stress.

The fastest way to relieve stess, is to get on battle.net, and create a hero arena (wc3)where your the only one with a hacked hero...and watch everyone get mad

after a game or two of hearing people whine and cuss you out...I feel right as rain.

Ask 3 questions:
1. What are you stressing about?
(For each thing you are stressing about)
2. Can I effect it?
3. Can I do anything to plan for the parts I cannot effect?

Then, if you answered yes to #2:
4. What can I do to effect it to the outcome I want? (Then do what you came up with.)

If you answered yes to #3.
5. What can I do to prepare for the things I cannot effect? (Then of course do them.)

Now go watch a movie or play video games or such. You've done everything you can and any worry you have is unfounded.

Also, you can make yourself feel a LOT better by doing some things for your body:
1: Get up early (don't sleep in as long as possible)
2: Go to bed early. (Doesn't have to be 9pm, but 10-11 or something reasonable)
3: Eat filling, healthie (ie, not snickers) meals regularly
4: Go to the bathroom (This mostly applied to tests and studying.)
5: Exercise

Just my suggestions. --------------------------

For the most part I don't. I recommend not emulating me in that regard. Sometimes killing lots of people and things in games will help, or going out to a movie or dinner. Or if it's really stressful and can't be avoided a mild sedative can really make all the difference. Mostly though I do not handle time related stress well, nor being forced to deal with highly stressed people and/or upset people for any considerable length of time.

Exercise. It really helps relieve stress for me. I usually pick up a basketball and play with some friends. When you're playing, it makes you think about the game as opposed to the stressor. The deep breathing makes you feel good, too.

Desert Combat mod in Battlefield 1942 for me. I crank up Robert Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries on the stereo, hop into the Apache with the Iraqis having 10 times as many men as me, and lay waste to them in El Alamein.

Exercise or listen to music. Sometimes both.

I might put on something chilled, lay on my bed and just drift off for an hour or two. Or I might put on something loud and fast and work out for a while. Sometimes I take the mattress off my bed and prop it against a wall (I can't afford a proper punch bag atm) and beat the @#%$ out of it for a while.

Works wonders.

I lift weights. For stress relief I find that intense resistance training is far, far superior to skating or cardio machines or DDR.

I talk to my friends, unless of course they are the cause of my stress in the first place ^.^
Other than that, FPS games do it for me, or playing someone who is really good at a 2D fighter. Ooohh.. so shiney!

3D Modelling - it feels good to create something and have total control over how it turns out.

Also, I enjoy just hitting a tennis ball (can't find my streetball) against the fence with my hockey stick and shooting hoops whenever I'm bored/stressed.

Lastly, smoking/drinking a little bit and playing an Project Gotham Racing 2, Vice City, or an FPS.

Beer.

I went out and bought a floor-standing punching bag and some bag gloves, too. That helps, and is a pretty fun workout even if you're not all angry.

By curing stress for one person, you grief a large number of other people and just pass your stress on to them.

A lot of good cures for depression are good cures for stress. Exercise is always great, because endorphins are like nature’s Prozac.

I usually just bottle it up and vent it at home by beating passersby.

Nah, I just find ways to blame myself and try to twist my way around the problems (which is tough, mind you; I'm a pretty hefty land mammal). If I can convince myself that it's my fault, things just go a bit easier.

I'm with Gyorg on this... it can be hard at first, but conditioning yourself to deal with things you can fix and not stressing about the rest is a really good investment of time and effort (although it probably doesn't help much with the immediate situation). I have a lot of pets and spending time with them cuts down on stress quite a bit, too... unconditional love from six purring heating pads (sometimes called cats) tends to mellow me out. Of course, the down side of that is that the occasional veterinary emergency stresses me out more than anything. =P

I'll second pets also. Fuzzy pets. Though I'm going to have to disagree and say that cats are cold, unfealing pets that only use you for food. Get ferrets or chinchillas or dwarf lopear bunnies or a small dog or such.

I like to buy time in a batting cage when I'm stressed. In seriously trying times, I can spend half a day hitting balls.

I recommend dogs that are half Chow and half German Shepherd. Coolest dog I know is that mix and has a badass personality.

She plays soccer, likes to smell "pretty" - spray perfume on the ground and watch her roll on the floor, attacks/eats bubbles that you blow with those kiddie bubble bottles, doesn't mind being picked up/carried around, can kick other dogs asses at only 50 pounds, and tucks legs under like a gazelle when hopping, and she watches TV with you...

Plus, she loves booze.

Cats can't compare!

Thanks for the input everyone.

Ive been looking for a gym that has a punching bag in it, that you dont have to be a member of. I would gladly spend 10 bucks for a bit of time on a punching bag hehe.

At one time I was a bouncer for a small club on beale street, and I guess throwing out the occasional loud mouthed patron took more stress off than I realized. Now that Im in a less physical job (delivering pizzas haha) stress level has soared.

As far as conditioning yourself to handle stress, I agree completely. Its just a matter of finding that outlet during the "conditioning" phase hehe. Im more worried about blowing up at someone or hurting the feelings of someone I care about (basically using them as the "outlet") when they obviously wouldnt deserve it.

Surprised no one suggested it, or maybe I missed it, but taking up a musical instrument is a great stress reliever. One of the most relaxing things I can think of to do is come home and play the banjo a little, even if I do suck at it right now. Once you get around the fact that you're going to be bad for a bit to start, it's fun as hell.

Or, if you already play, might wanna start trying to get back into it. Dunno, that's my suggestion, hope it helps some. Snibbs' Magelo

I like to bottle it up and release it at inappropriate times. Stress can cause a sense of over-paranoia that you really can't get anywhere else.

"WHO TOUCHED MY KEYBOARD AND MOVED THE MOUSE? IT TOOK ME TWO DAYS TO MOVE THE MOUSE WHERE I LIKE IT AND NOW IT'S ALL WRECKED!" I'll scream at the neighbors across the street through my window. They move quickly into their houses and try their best to avoid eye contact with me for the next couple of days.

I like to be somewhat stressed when working. I get really wound up and can get a lot done. Also I get to offend those around me without repercussions.

Thinking inappropriate things at inappropriate times in a humorous context does wonders for relieving excess stress.

jogging, sports, reading, movies, video games (Vice City comes mind fast), and try perhaps a new thing...try teas or different coffees, maybe smoke if you don't care, or a nice glass of wine is perfect sometimes...and if you really have a few hours to spare before you have to do something...smoke a blunt : ) )

Lastly, but not least, talking to friends really help. Have no friends? Make some and ask them to go get a coffee or something....it works and helps : )
