I live in a small gambling town in a tourist dependent area. I work in a liqueur/convenience/gift shop, k nuff said.
Say you go into a 7-Eleven in your area or on vacation, do you:
-Yell at the pimply faced teen about the price of the cigs?
Based on my very informal and unwanted poll everything is cheaper "were I come from".
-And then proceed to haggle with said poor shmuck behind the counter?
as if he has the authority to just change prices, like he would after being berated
-Why do they blame you for everything from the tax on tobacco to the greenhouse effect?
I'm not the owner, president, or god you know
-When you walk in, do you look for the product you came in for, or do you walk 2ft in the door and say don't you have any freekin Milk Duds in this town? When you could easily walk another 5 ft and find them yourself.
-When I greet a customer I expect a reply, at least a nod. Half the time I get nothing at all not even a look. Recently I've begun to verbally rescind my hellos after no response, small comfort really. And ya I could lose my job but I'm pretty sure I could replace this lofty position.
-Do your karma a little favor and don't say "boy this sure is a crappy little town" real quote, to a local.
Firstly it's just plain rude, second it's not too bright. Now this isn't the Deep South or anything but in some places comments like that will get the &$^# kicked out of you in a hurry.
-Insofar as gambling is concerned this town did not take your money. We do not, as opposed to apparent popular opinion, drag people from their homes and force them to gamble their hard earned money away. You put the money out there, deal with it or don't gamble you idiot. Who do you think is getting yelled at the owners (most of wich don't even live here), the gaming commission, no someone who is just trying to make a living. When it comes to table games they want you to win it's better tips for them, but these things are heavily regulated and we have no control over them. Go to a casino, look at the card pit, and see the 19 cameras pointed at you, double that for the ones you don't see and you'll get the picture.
-Back to retail, This is my most reviled customer, no hello just Marlboro reds, thats it then throws the money at you, usually crumpled, no please no thank you.
-What is it that makes people think that when they leave home it gives them license to treat everyone like total dog$#%& ?
-Why are . . . oh crap just had a really nice customer, kinda took the wind out of my angsty sails . . . one moment to re muster, should only take another customer or two.
-Why is everyone so angry, your on vacation for goodness sake, lighten up or keep your crappy attitude at home.
-I like good conversation as much as the next guy, but when there a three people behind you it may not be the time to tell me your life story.
Whoooaa okay didn't realize I had so many till I got going (and theres more, allot more) so I will try to wrap it up.
Disclaimer, sorta: If you are wondering, yes I am a jerk, but a jerk with opinions and a boat load of pet peeves. This is the second time I've typed this rant so it has lost the angry luster of the original.
So in summation:
-Tourists suck
-Being polite won't kill you, but I might
-It's not my fault
-Not all people are like above (especially if you've done any real customer service)
Well I hope this meets rant standards, sorry about the disjointed fashion in which I write.
If you liked this one future topics may include:
-Women who make good money need to lower their monetary requirements for possible mates ( not chauvinist just socio economic, and whiny).
-Or jerks who spend all there time reading and writing rants instead of working.
-Or jerks who spend all there time reading and writing rants instead of working.
This ain't the Deep South or anything, but around here at the Safehouse you might get your ass kicked for such a statement
Seriously though, i try to be real nice to people when i'm on vacation, since i'm not from around where ever i am. its part guilt that i do taht though, since my mom is generally a tourism towns worst nightmare (its not uncommon for, if we stay at the typically small hotels in maryland beach towns or eastern shore, for her to know the name of EVERYONE WHO WORKS THERE).
me and my friend will do that to people as they're leaving. seriously, he'll like, start yelling goodbye by the third time around if they dont respond. it's funny
Is raisin oatmeal somthin okay, ya I'm old too. (as well as bitter is that strange no . . . I think not) [ the answer to all your questions is those last three words]

I'll say hello up to four times, just because, after that the not-so passive/aggresive side says," it's on you 90+ yr old SO AND SO"
you can call em what you want cause . . . they can't hear you anyway.
Yes the joke is on me cause I'm on my way there, but not yet, so flame on, or do not I don't care. blah, blah, blaardi blar blar! and stuff

Your job sounds amazingly like mine.....I work in a tobbaco/gift shop. People from Iowa and the outlying towns, who are basically tourists in my town, come in all the time.
This is the first job when I've done "real" retail, like showing people stuff and triyng to get them to buy it. And I hate it. It's true, no matter where you are, something is cheaper somewhere. And customers always try and throw that in your face. Haggling is the norm at the shop I work out, and some people just take it way too far. Telling me it's cheaper down the street. Like thats really going to make me sell it cheaper.
Retail is the pits. I've always been an ******* on some level, but working retail and dealing with day to day people has just brought it all bubbling to the surface.
