Install Mozilla or Firebird/Thunderbird. Built-in popup and spam filters, a better rendering engine, and more secure. There's even an IE skin so it looks like what a lot of people are used to.
Nothing like an email worm that doesn't do anything, a popup that doesn't appear, or effective mail filtering (with the filtered stuff still readily available) to make your life easier. No email viruses, no "It keeps making more windows and I can't get rid of them!" calls, no funny stuff due to malware installing itself, and very little spam.
My parents recently had an issue with email not being delivered, but it turned out that the ISP started some sort of filtering. When my mom called their tech support, they couldn't even tell her if they were using serverside filtering. Gotta love it when your ISP causes more problems than "alternative" software for technically unsavvy people...
