I just got my DSL activated the other night, and I'm not planning on installing a router anytime soon (unless I find one dirt freaking cheap) so I am planning on installing Zone Alarm tonight.
I've heard that Zone Alarm causes problems with EQ unless you run EQ in windowed mode the first time after installing Zone Alarm.
I have two questions.
1. How much of an impact have you noticed with Zone Alarm and EQ? IE, does it slow it down tremendously?
2. I know this is a stupid question, but how can I run EQ in windowed mode without going into the game first? I thought you had to get to the EULA and then hit ALT+Enter to switch to windowed mode. Is there somewhere in the ini I can specify to run in windowed mode or something?
Hopefully I can pick up a router within the next month and get rid of Zone Alarm, but I figure Zone Alarm is better than nothing until I can recover from the wife's holiday spending orgy... Villaael Noir

Personally, I prefer Kerio Personal Firewall over ZA. Plus it's free for home users, though the latest version switched to a standard/advanced sort of thing like ZA is. FYI, the XP firewall stops only inbound traffic. It won't stop any connections going out from your PC (like a trojan sending out personal data).
Anyway, the problem is that you get a bunch of popup windows asking if you want to allow or deny this new connection. If you're in full-screen 3D mode, you can't get to the popup window to answer it. Does/did the same thing on Quake when I'd connect to a new server. I'd have to start the game and let the connection time out, then quit out and allow the connection in the popup window.
Also, watch www.slickdeals.net for routers. You should be able to find one for $10-$20. I've seen quite a few different brands and models go for about that much. -------------------------
