Now that the game is building speed....
Reply With Quote   #1

I know there were previous posts (at least one) made but that was during beta. I have seen the posts describing the updates that have been recently made so now I figure i'll ask...

How is it?

I played EQ1 back a few years ago and loved it. Then life got to busy so I quit. More recently I tried FFXI and thought it was a really good game...unfortunately life once again got in the way and I left it for awhile and never got back into it. I then went back to EQ1 but lost interest in it this time.

SOOOOOOO... in leui(sp?) of these facts whats everyone elses opinion now that the game has begun to work out its initial quirks?

From what you've said in your last post, it appears that you want to try the game, but you don't have time for it. Which is fine.

Chose WoW or not, it really doesn't bother me. Here's why I like WoW in a nutshell.

1). the game gives you incentives for doing things, but doesn't force you too.

a.) leveling:
you can level a million times faster in a group...this is due to the fact that you can share quests, and quests give you the same exp solo as they do in a group of 6. You can still do the same quest solo in most cases...it'll just take you longer, then again, it might not.

b.) items:
a large majority of the really good items drop globally..
..meaning you could be killing a bear, and it drops a cloak, and a wolf 3 zones over can drop the same cloak. many very good items come from quests...with these quests giving you an option between 2 to 4 items. Many of these items from quests will be better than the ones you already own.

c.) trade skills:
You can do a number of trade skills, from alchemy (my trade skill) to enchanting, to blacksmithing...to engineering. Each one has it's pluses and minuses. There is a possibility of failure...in which case you get your regents back, and try again...Many of the things you create will be useful to you...or useful to someone else. There are items that can be used only by people who are profecient in your trade skill, as well as quests that are available to people who can do your tradeskill as well.

d.) economy :
I'm level 25, and the highest ammount of money i've accumulated was 1gold and 50silver. Everything so far has been pretty balanced. 1gp = 100sp = 10000cp. Money hasn't been too too important in the game at this point...it's nice being able to go to the auction house, and buying a nice item, but most of the nice items I come across are found on things I kill or quests i've completed.

e.) youth:
I often go /who all 50 60....and only pop up a couple names of people above level 50. I imagine in a few months that will change, but for the most part...at least on icecrown...the youth (level wise) is pretty young...most level 30 or below...from what I can see.

f.) fun:

last but by all means not least, is fun. I enjoy the game quite a bit. I enjoy getting items, I enjoy gaining levels. I love how even stupid things like...when I swam way out into the ocean at level 7, I found a treasure chest...and while there was nothing great in it, and I almost drowned due to fatigue...I still had that brief moment of wholly **** what do we have here!!

I enjoy the fact that when I go link dead (56k modem here) and come back as a ghost cause I got killed...I spent 3mins running to my corpse...ressurect myself, and I'm back where I was pre-death. No exps penalty, no loss of items...no hassles.

I enjoy alot of other things in this game, that i'm not going to mention due to the length of this post, but so far from what i've seen, this game has really breathed life into the MMORPG genre for me.

I haven't played EQ2, or DAOC, or shadowbane...and all those others, and i'm not knocking on those that enjoy those games at all. Like I said before, if you decide WoW ain't for you, i'm not going to lose any sleep, but for me, it's fun.

The game didn't really seem to have any initial quicks. Very surprisingly good straight out of beta, which is rare indeed for a MMORPG. The only thing that's been bothering me is they sometimes have a problem with their database it seems that results in lag when you try to loot items.

The high point to me is the amounts of quests. My quest log is almost always full, and they're interesting. They really help keeping the game feel like a grind. Soloing is pretty much just as viable as doing things with my regular little group of 3. (warrior, priest, rogue)

It's fun. I mean really fun. Like EQ at release fun. But without a lot of the more annoying factors of EQ at release. Although the other day when the boat came to dock it pushed me clean off the pier, which gave me immediate flashbacks to EQ's boats. Generally though a very well done game so far and I'm enjoying it. The tradeskill system is much friendlier than EQ2's for instance.

Oh and for coin, get to know your Auction House. Sometimes even a junk (to you) item can sell for a bit of extra coin. It's such an elegant selling system anyway, shame not to use it. Money yo-yos a lot with the cost of training as it is. One day I have 1 silver and can't even afford to auction my stuff, let alone train, end of next I'm up to 7 gold.

Make sure to start saving up for a mount at level 40 - you don't need one right away at 40, but damn i save so much time, and i save my own life so much time with one, since if i'm on a mount almost no alliance bother me while i'm just running down a path.

Biral, I've noticed that most people seem to have enough to buy a mount as soon as they hit level 40.

I myself will be freed from the costs, and I will laugh greatly. Gogo, Felsteed.

Heh you must group with some rich ****ers trolo - i didn't train from 36 on and basically whored cash to get it at 40. Several people in my guild who didn't do that didn't get their mount until 42-44ish.

And a hearty **** you, damn warlock
