I broke down too and I'm giving wow a try. I picked one of the low population PvP servers. Blood something or Crush something. I've just dabbled, I still haven't chosen a race/class. I'm thinking priest (undead or troll), druid (tauren), warrior (troll), or warlock (undead). I haven't totally ruled out shaman either, heh.

That's one of the reasons I love this game, all the classes IMO are so fun to play.
Yeah, the only classes I have tried and didn't particularily care for were Priest and Warrior. Granted, neither made it past level 6, so it is not a completely fair assessment.
I have a 35 Hunter on Llane (horde) as my main right now with assorted others. Hunter is a nice solo class, and can play the puller/DPS role in a group. Pets can offtank fairly well, and so can the Hunter, although not great. The one that looks like it might see some play is a Druid as well. Nuke, Nuke, shapeshift, maul maul, buff, heal. For no more that I have played her (level 12) it seems a lot of fun.
When do druids first get shapeshift? I played one to 5 or so, but before I decide what class I want to be I need to get some unique spells (fundamentally he plays the same as the priest so far with a buff, heal, and nuke).
The warlock was cool because you get the pet right away, so at least you get to see how that is fairly fast. Not sure when hunters get their pet, but I liked using a gun instead of a bow with the dorf hunter I made.
So far my highest level class is a level 8 undead priest. I really like the undead theme/areas so far, so that has a good chance of being the race I end up playing. I should probably just play each class to 10 or so and then decide which race/class suits me best.
At what level do people start grouping, if ever? I've never really been a healer before, but if I'm just going to have to solo forever maybe the priest isn't a good idea. I'm also playing on a PvP server, so that may slightly influence my race/class choice (though very slightly. I'm not so much interested in what class owns what class right now because I know it will change eventually, it always does).
I found that playing most characters up to 10 gave you a good idea of the class because at around 10 is when most characters get most of the abilities that define their class. Hunters get pets at 10, druids get bear form at 10.
As far as grouping, because most people feel like they have to solo because they can, I found that grouping didn't start until upper teens into the 20's. I would always try and get a partner with quests though, things seemed to be much much easier with a second person, plus it gave you someone to talk to.
I'm on Stormreaver in Igglebound (Lots of Da Bashin Iggles and Honorbound from SZ, with a nice sprinkling of pure teamers from VZ). Got my undead rogue to 57, hope to push for 60 in next week or so.
Damn, it's going to be hard to make a decision on what I want to play....
I really hate race/class restrictions. I mean, some make sense (no undead druids), but some are completely arbitrary (why troll priest and mages but no warlocks?)
One thing that bugs me about reading the official forums (I know... I know...) is that it seems that some classes aren't even sure what they are going to end up as in the long run. A preist sounds kind of fun, but a lot of people are saying how good they are at PvP and I'd hate to put a lot of time into one just to have Blizzard turn it into a heal bot.

Bear form at 10, Seal at 15 or 16, Cat at 20, Travel at 30, Dire bear at 40.
