So I decided to buy another stick of Corsair memory for my computer, and it arrives today. I install it, and strangeness occurs. The boot sequence is instantaenous, windows loads in mere seconds, the desktop loads and....suddenly I'm looking at my boot screen again. I shut down the PC.
Turns out my mobo has 3 memory slots, one green, two purple. How you order the memory results in either the board runnning the memory as dual channel, or not dual channel. After looking at my mainboard's manual, and scratching my head in confusion trying to figure out where DIMM slots 5 and 6 are....I put them both in the purple slots. (I already owned a 512 stick of the same stuff I bought).
So I boot.....and my PC sits forever at detecting primary/secondary IDE channels. And why is that? Because it identifies the secondary IDE device as some weird combination of symbols, like stuff you'd find in a complier or something. IDE 1 is where my CD drive should be. Windows then boots, and as the desktop loads, my mouse is dead as well. Then windows recognized my mouse as new hardware, and my CD drive as some serial name that I don't recognize, that isn't the drives serial number. It also detected one or two other things that I didn't catch. So I open explorer, and find my CD drive just isn't there, device manager reporting that it failed to start. On the plus side, the memory took without my head exploding.
Baffled, I did the only thing I really could. I [ulled the IDE connecters and plugged them back into the same spots, jiggled some cords, and made sure everything fit snuggly. Then I started it up again, and I had no problems, and everything seems to be in order.
I'm not really sure what I did now. It's been my experience that when devices just up and go "haha I'm not here" after some change you've made, it's not the sort of problem that is over and done with. Kinda like when my sound card quit working after I slammed my fist down next to my computer in anger, and locked the whole system up in the middle of a game of JKII. I got the sound card working again, and everything seemed to be fine.....until 7 months later when my HD died, and I suddenly realized why my PC had been running like crap for ever.....
Anyways, anyone got any input on wtf happened? Event Viewer Applications an error in the event system and 2 warnings saying "failed to fire the Changedsubscription method on subscription ID...."

I don't want to live in a world where there are no consequences for being stupid. A few thousand years ago these users would have been eaten by lions.
