I keep reading about this website called "MySpace" that is supposed to be the new driving force of the internet and especially internet advertising. However, I haven't heard any real internet users, like those who post here, discuss it.
Is this a real internet phenomenon, like Google or weblogs, that I'm going to need to know about, or is MySpace just something that people, desperate to cling onto the last remnants of the tech bubble, are hyping for no good reason?
Myspace is like blogs and thefacebook put together, except its mostly for high school kids who are trying to find ways to show how cool they are or to show how emo they can be.
Just kind of a network hookup type thing to keep in contact with old buddies as far as I can tell. I am a very bad blogger so I either don't post blogs or delete them after I post them because I think they make me sound extremely pompous/arrogant about my meditation/stuff.
In the last couple months I've had 3 or 4 people on campus try to turn me on to Myspace. Of course, it's usually females bubbling over about how they can stay in touch with their friends. Like it's been said, I've yet to hear one dedicated user of the internet tell me why it's good. But people that don't surf much seem to be absolutely fascinated by it.
Yeah, it seems mostly MySpace is used to keep track of old classmates as well as for 20-somethings to hook up with each other. I know of a few people here in Dallas area that (claim to) get a lot of sex through meeting people on MySpace and clubbing with them, etc.
Unfortunately, MySpace sites are also generally unreadable, flashy, and annoying with as many embedded music, movie clips, animated gifs, and horrendous fonts and backgrounds possible. There are exceptions, but the ease of creating the sites allows for people to cram them full of stuff they find amusing.
Yeah I agree zeno I don't really browse anybody's myspace pages. The only one I really like that I have seen is my own...Haha. Oh well.
It's kind of nice though because I can put stuff I have worked on up there and get feedback/comments. If you're not an artsy person (Ok so I'm not saying I make *good* art) then I wouldn't think it had much to offer. I only joined because my band was like, "hey you should join myspace".
It's a decent way to meet up with other musicians.

Yep. Many myspace pages remind me of the page Homer Simpson made by copy/pasting from other sites.
I ended up making one mostly to look at links that my friend kept sending me. I ended up sticking some stuff on it and leaving it be for the most part. I don't think I've put anything on it in at least a couple weeks and I've only had the account maybe a month.
I've actually had a couple local people contact me, so its not that bad, I just get tired of all the spam friend invites people send out. A lot of people just try to add as many people as possible.
As poorly implemented as it is, MySpace has brought my circle of friends closer. Since we're spread out from the top to bottom of CA, it's a nice way to see how everyone is doing, and when they'll be in town.
Basically, it allows us to easily check-in w/ people who we'd never call or email regularly. Before MySpace, we used a message board, and this is pretty much just an expansion of that.
Of course, I complain about it the same way I did about AOL when I first had an internet connection. There are a lot of things that aren't great about it, but the idea is strong and the community is getting ridiculously large.
As Deser commented, it's also an awesome way to promote unsigned/newly signed bands. My roommate's band ( www.myspace.com/stagnant ; please check it out, they need the help ) has pretty much used it to replace their main website. Now, their biggest fans are somewhere in Iowa/Georgia etc. Pretty crazy.
Yeah i have a couple of friends,(,Five L's , HC, and WZ) in underground music and they use MySpace as advertising. The artist profiles let them put up songs for people to listen to and advertise local shows. Ive been to a few shows with one of those friends and several of the people who come up say they learned about the show on MySpace.
Myspace is a strict requirement of living in California if you are under 30 years old. I don't know if it's just San Diego, but I don't know ANYONE (youngish) who isn't on myspace. I have yet to meet someone at school not on Myspace too. I signed up for it this summer, but I don't really use it for anything and I try to avoid looking at it too much because people's profiles are soooooo obnoxious.
I hate those photo and video hosting sites because they are way to easy to use. And those sites that have cut and paste html/html for retards. People should not be allowed to utilize pictures, videos, and worst music files without some basic understanding of design principles. I really don't understand how someone can create a page with an ugly background image that doesn't tile properly, add unreadable text to it in nearly the same color as the background, cover it all with eleventy billion inane pictures no one wants to see anyway, add a low quality sound byte of a song that's been playing on the radio for the last month straight and think it all looks totally freaking awesome. Those people should be banned from using the internet. Forever.
Growing up in a military family and moving nearly every three years, well, I changed a lot of schools. I've also moved around a lot once I was on my own and have had several jobs. With MySpace I'm able to list all the schools (and years) I attended as well as the jobs I've had. You can search by all those parameters and find people which has been great. I've gotten in touch with a lot of old schoolmates and co-workers, so IMO MySpace is a wonderful thing.
Granted, the majority of the pages on there have 16 videos, 4 songs, and about 7 Flash animations all playing at the same time along with a neon pink background and yellow lettering. Don't forget the 236 'friends' the person has (and doesn't actually know a single one).
In short, ignore the idiots and look up some old friends. It's good fun. Hell, someone could even form a Safehouse group and we could all.. no, that's much too silly.

It's like the early 90's of the internet all over again!
I just find it utterly amazing that 12-15 year old girls who cant even spell ANYTHING AT ALL correctly, can write semi complicated pages of html code. its lile, damn, imagine if they put that into something to advance them in life instead!

Uh, I don't think they're writing them. I'll bet it's a template.

Like I said earlier
Myspace is like the AOL of the current decade.
Except it's free (except for advertising) and doesn't do a very good job at real-time chat.
Also it has a smaller adult-only rival. Not a pournography site, but a place that doesn't accept profiles of <18yr olds.
There's another rival called LiveJournal, which has produced such winning threads as this one. WARNING: most of the links on the first page are so old they're broken but overall it is VERY VERY NSFW.
MySpace is alittle different than how friendster etc. was.. it's getting HUGE, and like alot of the others, pretty much everyone I know has one. I'm 22, and I mostly use it to keep up with friends that I don't talk to on a daily.. it makes it so that even if I lose contact, or lose thier phone number, or they lose thier phone or something, there is always a way to contact them(they check it when they go to a friends house or somethin).
I'm not going to lie, I have used it quite a few times to hook up with girls. I actually have met some really good friends on there. You message someone, talk to them for a while... invite them out to party, and see how it goes. Although, it takes a while to get used to deciphering the pics to see if they are using good angles to 'change' thier looks.
Another thing... any of you ever been to a party, meet some super cute girl, hit it off, and something happens(cops come, godzilla stomps in.. whatever), and you don't get her number, and you're pissed the next few days? I've had that happen, then found them on myspace.
i'm curious as to the people who use it to hook up. what the hell do you say to people "hey babe checked out your pix u look sexee wanna go to the bars?" seems bizarre to me - because no matter how things are worded that's kinda the underlying message i think i'd read out of almost anything.

haha I was thinking about using myspace to get some hookups since I'm still fairly new to the Houston area and don't know much people outside of work. But then I looked at some of the myspace pages of girls 18-25 and my eyes started bleeding. The maturity level is a big turnoff too. I tried 22-25 and it was no better. Maybe I should try 25-30. I tend to get along with older women fairly well.
I know a number of people who use myspace for hookups or sharing fetish information. I've been shown a lot of interesting pictures of one night stands, friends, and enemies by various friends of mine who are addicted to myspace.
I just started using myspace not too far after qtip, and I even though alot of the profiles are seriously just effed up, I find it as an awesome place to find music and/or promote your band. I love browsing and looking at different music-myspace places, and putting them as your top-8 friends listing, adding their songs to your profile can help get the word out on your favorites. I have had a few friends comment on bands I have put supported!
Since we are discussing it, I would love to add any safehousers to my list! Post your myspace link! My Myspace
