Space Combat Sims

I just recently got a decent joystick (again) and so I need:

Recommendations on space sims that've come out in the last, oh say.. 5 years. While Freelancer was fun and all.. the mouse control really blew. I loved the Wing Commander games and the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games (will they run on XP?!) and right now I'm playing DarkStar One (excellent game!).

I've also open to contemporary flight sims.. as long as they're not Falcon 4.0 or any other super-technical simulation. I could really care less about g-forces and such! I also dislike the arcadey ones like Blazing Angels.. so I guess I'm after a nice middle ground like the old F117A Stealth game.

Thanks!

As much as I've tried, I can't get X-Wing and Tie Fighter to run on my XP machine.

So if anyone else knows a stable, easy way to do it... I'll make sex to your face.

I'd love to get into flying games, can you get decent:FP to work on a xp machine? I remember playing it on a 95 machine. I think I probably cheated playing those games with a trackball, I remember playing with a joystick and going damn turning sucks in these planes then switching to a trackball and spin my fighter in decent on a dime.

What about the realistic falcon games? I thought janes went out of business a few years ago? Is there anything new recent now days? Or is there last release the best you can get now days?

I remember hearing a lot about the Freespace games. I'll have to check 'em out. What about the Roberts brothers (Wing Commander dudes) game they made afterwards.. Starlancer? Was that any good? Anyone have experience with the X games? X2: The Threat and X3: Reunion?

Deuce, they recently re-released Falcon 4.0 with the subtitle Allied Force:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/falco...q=falcon%204.0
It's basically a super-patched and heavily modded (by the fanbase) version of the original 4.0. It supposed to be awesome, but again, way too technical for me.

I honestly can't say I've even heard of a good space sim since the days of the Wing Commander and X-Wing series.

Even though you would think technology would make such games fantastic.

Tie Fighter should have a remake or something.

Starlancer was a decent space sim, although a little weak on plot. It was made by Chris Roberts and most of the Wing Commander people.

I remember buying decent freespace, and playing it on my first pentium chip, like a 133 or a 166 something crazy like that. Ran just fine on its intergrated video. And then i was walking around staples for some reason and they had a locked case of video cards and there was like a 8mb pci voodoo banshee. I was like wtf is a graphics card? Oooh its suppose to make the graphics prettier, well I dunno if it'll work on my computer but what the hell, i worked hard on the pizza place over the summer.

Read the instructions...omg. And Cracked opened my second pc upgrade ever when i was 14. (first was a cdrom upgrade on a 486) Put it in booted it up. Played freespace again, OMG look at all these new effects ships blowing up. I swear i never have been so amazed at a graphics card upgrade then doiing that.

God I loved fp:1. I never got to get the second, i heard there was alot of mods and addons done to make it better, but i cant seem to find any website for it.

Spoke to soon, the company gave out the source code for the second freespace and theres a open freespace type thing going here

I've also found this site which has the discs for download. Now as both the creator is out of business and published the code openly and I think even the publisher has been closed down or restructured I do believe its ok to post this link, El Modo if you disagree, click the edit button and remove it.
