I don't get why he wears all white. Is the utterly shady looking guy in all white any less creepy and visually obtrusive than the utterly shady looking guy in all black?
Well, it's the middle east and all his missions seem take place during the day and in crowded cities. So everyone is dressed in white desert robes and covered faces, so he blends in much better dressed like Storm Shadow than he would dressed as Snake-eyes.
This is the quote of joystick quoting famitsus review.
We've been big supporters of Assassin's Creed throughout its development. Not only because it looks fantastic, but because the advertising for the game has been incredible and we are very easily swayed. Thankfully though, it seems our faith has not been misplaced: The game walked away with a combined score of 37/40 from the notorious reviewers at Famitsu. (You can see a tiny scan right here.)
As a point of reference, 37 is one point lower than Super Mario Galaxy and the same as Halo 3 , so it seems that Ubisoft's marketers can now add "critically acclaimed" to Assassin's Creed ads. ... As if they needed to be more compelling.
So I guess its getting good and low reviews?

I read the EGM article too and basically they said the controls were too complex. And at first I was thinking "Too complex? Why dont they just rip off Splinter Cell or PoP?" Then EGM reminded readers that this was the studio that did PoP: Sands of Time...and I died a little inside.
last time i played prince of persia, was back in my 9th grade computer lit class...one of the computers had it, back in 94 or 95....it made me never want to play any prince of persia games ever again.

Well, it should be pointed out that the PoP series from Sands of Time on is nothing like it was before those games came out.
looks great, and i never trust a review on controls, thats something you just have to experience and detrmine for yourself, for me as long as the game play/story/graphics are top notch, complex controls are not a problem, been looking forward to this one myself.
how can the controls be too complex? maybe for the PC i can see that but in one of the interviews i saw they were saying that they mapped a single button to each body part that would do the logical action at that point. so like if you're standing at a wall and want to grab it to climb you would press the hands button, as i understand it.
"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return" - Leonardo da Vinci
Part of the problem with a lot "new control" games is that there's a general populace out there that will slam it. They want what they're used to. This happened with Lair for the PS3 as well. The developers really need to give options with the controls, the new way and then an alternate way which most people are used to.
i could see controls being too difficult for an action game like that...think of it like this...think of some really hard move from your favorite fighting game, one that you try real hard to do but can only seem to do it on accident.
now use that move in an action game just to jump a roof while running on the rooftop.
i'd consider that example i just thought of to be pretty hard on the controls.
For the record, I find the practices of Gamestop stores to be abhorrent at best...
So, after trekking last night to find a midnight release (didn't exist) I returned to my home emptyhanded (after being told by one wal-mart that another one had it, and they had JUST gotten off the phone with them, mind you...) and much lighter in the gas tank... oh well. I knew Gamestop got it in today.
Except, as an earlier call to make sure they had it in revealed, I knew that they wouldn't sell it to anybody walking that didn't have a pre-order...
So, I walk in, already knowing this would be the case, but I had an ace up my sleeve. I had some other really shitty game from a while back pre-ordered at this store, so I walk in, and the conversation goes thusly:
"Hi there, I'm here to pick up Assassin's Creed."
"Only if you have a pre-order."
"It should be under ****"
"Okay, let me look" He looks for a few minutes through the stack... "I'm not seeing that name in here..."
"Well, it should be in there... but, don't you have any extra copies laying around anyway?"
"Nope, we only get in as many as we have pre-orders for. We get another shipment in tomorrow for regular sales"
"I see..."
"Well, let me check the computer for your name..." he also gets my phone number, "Hmm, I see (really shitty game title here) pre-ordered, but nothing else."
"Well, that's not right... I cancelled that pre-order and had the money towards that put towards Assassin's Creed... Or, I thought I did anyway"
"Hang on, let me go get you a copy from the back..." He comes back with a fresh copy, not for anybody's pre-order...
"Tomorrow's truck come early?"
"Uhh... no, we're just not supposed to sell new titles the day they come out so people pre-order more" (Emphasis mine)
What... the ****. This is why I hate these dedicated game retailers with a fiery passion. I fully intend on picking up a copy of the game from another store tomorrow and returning it to Gamestop just because they pull that kind of ****.
Anyhow... really fun game, although it starts off with a twist I would have expected at the end of a movie from that Shyamallamadingdong guy that did Signs and ****...
EDIT -- Made something a little more clear
Also, the Fed-Ex logo has an arrow in it Toprem.

Or maybe the guy knew you were bull****ing him, and decided to deny you the game you wanted.
Nah, the guy was doing what GS always does. Not that I defend the outright lie to get what he wanted, but it's typical GS BS policy to use that tactic to sell pre-orders.
Wait, you went in there and bold faced lied to the guy and you are angry at the companies policies? Come on man!

Actually, I had already poked around a little bit, and knew that they were already telling people that they only had enough for the people who pre-ordered (call aheads on this **** is a good idea). So yeah, I'm angry at the policy that they only sell new release games on the day they come out to people who pre-ordered. They have the ****ing game, it's in the back, but because you didn't help the store's numbers by throwing down $5 to reserve the game, you can't have it until a truck that doesn't exist shows up. It's not like I'm taking somebody else's copy that had put a pre-order down before, I'm just taking from the store's overstock. THAT is a shitty policy, which isn't much better than their old policy of selling the copies of games that WERE set aside for pre-orders that hadn't gotten picked up yet that day. Which, mind you, is the reason I don't ****ing pre-order unless there's a good pre-order bonus like beta access.
It doesn't piss anybody else off that these stores are LYING to the customers about the availability of games to boost their own pre-sale orders for no other reason than to look good to corporate?
And come on, I'm being attacked for using a little subterfuge to legally obtain something that by all rights should be available everywhere on a rogue board? (Wal-Mart, Meijer were unloading their trucks and told me that the game was definitely on it, but it would take a while to get to those boxes) At least I actually paid for the game, nobody got hurt by this lie. I didn't get the game earlier than the street date by lying, I didn't get any sort of spiffy discount or benefit by doing this other than getting the game before the other retailers got it off the truck and onto the shelves.

They have delayed the game here by a week. It doesn't release until the 21st now. It seems that there were shipping delays etc. What really annoys me is the place where I had pre-ordered had offered a pre-order pack, which doesn't seem to be available either. So for the next week, I have to live vicariously through posts here and online reviews.
I wasn't attacking you, I'm just saying that the employee is probably going to be less than helpful if he knows that you're trying to pull a fast one on him.
I went into a gamestop and got castlevania for the psp. I said when does mass effect come in, they go blah blah next week blah preorder? I say no thank you, I dont like your practice of having to preorder a game to get it the day it comes out. If I really need it the same day I'll go to frys or bestbuy or simmiular retailer.
Then I left.
I rarely buy at gamestop/eb because of there business practices. So I try and put my money where my mouth is. Of course I'm not going to spend an extra 15mins driving and fuel if I pass by a gamestop and I was going to buy an older game instead of go to another retailer farther away for the same cost.
As far as AC, I'll be buying it eventually when the price drops and I catch up on other games.
Strange. The Gamestops/EBs around here get it on the Tuesday of the week, and always get extra copies. I went in today and picked one up with no hassle at all.
Yes, I know it is Wednesday, but Monday was a Holiday so it doesn't count
I do not pre-order anymore either except in the situation where it is a niche game (read: turn based games, **** FPS and RTT), otherwise they get in one copy and I have to wait for the next shipment. Usually they get in 5 -10 copies over the pre-order, so there is no need.
I just want to clear something up. I've run a GameStop for the last two years and here's the deal. When a new game comes out (especially the hot ones) we get an email the day before and an email the day of, from corporate, saying sell the game to EVERYONE that walks in the door. Do NOT turn away any customers (and we'll usually get a few more from our DMs emphasizing the point!). It's not a 'business practice' or company policy that you're having problems with.. it's a ******* of a store manager that doesn't know how to run his store. We're even ranked on this (how many non-reserve copies we sell) to encourage this.
I'm pointing this out because I take a lot of pride in the store I run (I run a store that *I* would want to shop at) and I take pride in my company. It sucks to see complaints like this because of employees, who frankly, don't have a ****ing clue.
I don't go to Gamestop unless I HAVE to because of the constant pre-order questions. But anyway...
Yesterday I drive 20 miles on my lunch to hit the mall (Gamestop/Bestbuy). Neither place has any and they tell me it'll be the next day (today) before I can get it. I didn't pre-order, so Gamestop told me 2 days or late that day.
So I head back to work disappointed because I knew I would have to spend my night in wait. But then a friend calls to brag to me that he got his copy at 4pm. So later that night after practice I go to Best Buy and pick it up. But the joke's on him, because I got the Collector's edition, and he sucks ****.
But I was kinda disappointed with the controls. I really like the new setup and how they have each button perform different functions rather than have A do everything, but while walking around I found myself doing all kinds of weird ****...
For example, I was walking by a tree and was kinda looking around and didn't quite make it around the tree. So the guy gets on the tree and does a weird jump off of it. Not a jump off, or flip even... but some weird little "hey! I'm gay and it's beautiful, and i'm awesome, and this is fun!" kinda Richard Simmons "hop" if you will.
There were some other issues, but I didn't play it long enough to fully grasp the controls so I can't say too much else at this point. The only other issue I had, which I knew about, was the story mode. It'll be interesting to see how my "surpressed reincarnation/family passed on" memory system will hold through an entire game.

I'm young enough to do it over and over again, but old enough to do it right the first time!
best part so far is climbing the viewpoints. Not stealthy like Thief was, although sounds like that may change later on once you gain more skills. I'm liking the graphics on the 360,which is why I like climbing the viewpoints and looking around. Although it seems they toned down all the color on purpose.
I've got no problem with the controls.
So I've still not played Assassin's Creed, cause I still don't have a 360. However, I wanted to throw a general question out there for discussion. A fellow I know from another forum I frequent was complaining that the game has strong "anti-Christian" themes, even to the point of being propaganda, and was offended by this. I'm not here to support or deny this opinion, rather I'd like to hear some thoughts on this from others who've played the game.
Do you think AC paints a negative picture of Christianity?
Its not anti anything, its anti everything, in a way. You have factions trying to control the holy land, and you're not on either side, trying to bring peace to the land, without allowing either side to control it. At least that seems to be the "on top" story line. There is an underlying theme that you have to figure out, so I haven't reached it yet.
When you are in the cities, you may hear people(muslims) speaking to the citizens and speaking anti christian, but there are also people(christians) speaking anti muslim in other cities. It evened out, but I'm sure there are many that will only pay attention to one part.
There isn't anything to get offended over that I've heard yet.

From what I've seen, all sides get equal stabbing time.
I've got a card to gamestop and was looking around and saw that they have preorders for Assassin's Creed for DS.
anone heard any reviews for the DS version and if it'd be good to get..
or am I better off getting another DS game?
or wait for the PC version to come out?
Great game.
Visuals are outstanding, gameplay is fun and engaging, storyline is pretty cool.
( as to the anti christian thing, its not anti christian or anti anything, its just "based" off of historical events that happen to be during the crusades so nothing to get offended about, unless your bored and like getting offended)
As to the controls, whoever reviewed the controls as too confusing might want to go back to something a little less challenging like pong, because the controls are very easy to use, mainly because its context sensitive.
For instance, you are sprinting away from some guards, and you come along a gap in the rooftops, you dont have a "jump" button to push, the game simply knows that this is a situation where you need to "jump" the gap and it does, but if instead of a gap in the rooftops lets say you come across a tower wall, the game knows you need to "climb" in this situation and so you start climbing.
Love the viewpoints myself as well
The only thing i dislike is the flag gathering missions, ok, dislike is too strong a word lol
I really have trouble finding anything wrong with this game so far, granted im only to my 5-6th ish "assassination" but im loving it so far, definitely worth my $50, and its been awhile since i could say that.
Luck
edit: playing the PS3 version though i dont think it matters with this one

How far are you in the game? I feel like the gameplay itself is fun, but the overall game isn't nearly as great as it should've been - the cutscenes can't be skipped, you can't have more than one save per profile, there's no replay value, and the storyline is majorly lacking + weird... to me it feels like a great rental but a terrible buy. I guess mainly because when you go through to play it again, you're gonna get pissed at all the BS you can't skip past (not just 'cutscenes' but opening tutorial segment as well). The game needed more missions, faster. And less of the cheesy sci-fi meta-game stuff. That was just weird. Extracting memories from DNA? WTF?
This game was awesome, its been one of the first games I played and didnt drop my attention. There were a few glitches along the way, but overall I enjoyed every bit of it. The inability to skip some basic parts of it will hamper the replay but I imagine I will be going through the old missions to try and assasinate people better. I enjoyed saving citizenX every time, the controls were fluid and made doing cool combos fun for me. Everytime I got to jump off a roof and stab a guard in the skull while in the air made my day.
I liked the scifi stuff, especially how part of the story continued into it. Also since there will be sequels I cant wait what comes next. I'm hoping the continue for 2 more games. One where they tap into his memory to help further locate the ones around the world. The next in present day trying to get them back.
Got the game when BB was running it for $37, which was a steal for a PS3 game. The game is freaking fantastic. I am enjoying it highly and am at the end just finished the last assassination and all the twists that come after.
"Forums: You have to form your opinions immediately based on jack s*it then fight them to the death! It's like Highlander, but instead of swords we use ignorance."
The movement system rocks. It's more like driving than platforming, only your driving over rooftops.
The graphics are retarded good. The cities look incredible.
The combat is just fun. It's frustrating till you understand that its rhythm based. Then its awesome.
The bad is...the stealth. It's just plain broken. The blending into the crowd aspect of the game just doesn't work right, and makes the AI seem braindead besides.
Not only that, but it's completely unnecessary. Having a stealth game where stealth doesn't matter makes the whole thing pointless. This isn't Thief or Splinter Cell where if you get spotted you get dead fast. Altair is a BADASS. I can literally kill 10 guys at once without difficulty. Which makes the whole "plan your getaway after your assassination" portion of the game pointless. After the first assassination, I found it was much easier to kill my target, and then kill every guard that showed up, and then stroll out.
They tried to make a stealth game that tried to do stealth in a completely new way. I'm glad they wanted to try, but they failed miserably. This game would have been 10x better if it just took place at night and used the hiding in shadows mechanic of stealth instead.
The other downside is the extremely simple, repetitive "missions" that you have to do over, and over, and over.
What it comes down to is this. If they made a Thief 4 with this games graphics, movement and combat, but Thief's own stealth gameplay, and style of mission objectives...I'm pretty sure I'd never stop orgasming.
