About a week and a half ago we reported on a rumor that Christian Bale would be starring in the fourth installment of the Terminator series, known as Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. There was a good deal of speculation as to whether he would be playing John Connor, a terminator, or some other character altogether. Now confirmation comes via Variety that the British actor will play the adult John Connor, leader of the human resistance against the murderous machines.
Now the bad news: McG (Charlie's Angels, We Are Marshall) is directing. He is expected to begin production in Budapest this coming April, with a Summer 2009 release date in mind. Whether or not Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved is up in the air. The Austrian-born star is still busy governing California, leaving little time for acting jobs. Also, let's face it, he just doesn't have the physique of a terminator any more.
So it seems Harry Knowles and his infallible source was right after all. Let the mixed feelings about this casting news begin.
However much Bale turns me on, there's no way this movie is going to be good.
Edit: Oh yeah, seems two of the writers listed for it worked on T3 and Catwoman...

Maybe I am missing something as I never saw Terminator 3. If this movie is suppose to take place in the future when the machines have taken over, than wouldn't a human looking terminator be pointless? The terminators looked human when they traveled into the past before Skynet was activated. In the future they were just skeletal robots. The only reason for a terminator to look human in the future would be to spy on the human resistance, but none of the terminators ever seemed clever enough to pull that off. They may have looked human, but they didn't act human.

I'm totally gonna geek out here for a second but the Arnold Terminator is a T-800 model 101 -- and they all looked like him (model 102 looks like someone else, etc). I think it was in Terminator 1, that they showed the human looking terminators in the future as well. They used them to infiltrate human camps/settlements and Kyle explained that they had to have dogs to tell them apart before it was too late (if I'm remembering right). So they had them both used heavily. Although the impression I got was more that they were meant to trick humans into getting close enough to kill them, rather than to spy.
Anyway, I was extremely disappointed in T3 and the choice of director for this one doesn't exactly excite me either. I don't want Terminator to be Charlie's Angel-ified -- they're supposed to be darker movies... or were until Terminator 3 came out with super bright colors everywhere. McG would do well to follow Cameron's example of how to use color filters to set the mood of the movie... and for the love of god they better not do any more stupid sunglass jokes.
I don't usually get mad at the bastardization of franchises I liked (Jurassic Park, Robocop, Aliens, etc) but for some reason T3 really bugged me.

Yep.
In the scene where Reese loses his picture of Linda Hamilton. They use dogs to identify the Terminators. The Terminator that appears in Reese's flashback is a different "model" than the one Skynet sends to the past.
I sort of gather that the Terminators are the elite machines, if such a thing can exsist.

Oh yes... anything ANYTHING with Christian Bale is good. I just turn down the volume and fast forward to scenes with him. Preferably sans shirt.
Terminators are like Skynets extermination specialists. They find where clumps of humans are hiding, get in amongst them, then go wild and kill as many humans as they can. With humans needing to breed and Skynet making his troops its a numbers game.
Mind you I would just nail anyone who looked like a professional body builder, both Arnold and the other T1 termie were a little large for someone who should be on a starvation level diet.
