As expected GOG.com did relaunch last thursday and with it came Baldur's Gate. Today they added Planescape: Torment and there are expected to be five more Atari/Hasbro titles on the way.
First and foremost, he said that last week's temporary closure of GOG was inevitable for the site's relaunch. "98% of the code of our website was rewritten to be able to welcome more users and deliver a better experience, which required a major change in our backend and as a matter of fact, taking down our platform for a few days," Rambourg explained. He told us that management was faced with two options: make an "official 'boring' statement" or take "a more creative route." As evidenced by the past week, it's pretty clear management chose the latter.
I'd argue whether the 'creative route' includes scaring people into thinking GOG went bankrupt (especially during this economy) and Guillaume Rambourg still comes off looking like a douche, but it does offer information about what happened.
As an apology to the offline fiasco, anyone who created a GOG beta account (anyone who created an account before September 20th) will get Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games added to their account. For those who already bought the game, you get to choose a game from Strategy First's list of games.
Also, since Planetscape Torment was released two more Atari/Hasbro games have been released; Icewind Dale Complete and The Temple of Elemental Evil. The next Atari/Hasbro title will probably be launched tomorrow or Friday.
Finally for those of you who have bought Betrayal at Krondor, GOG has added Betrayal in Antara to it and has redubbed it the Betrayal at Krondor Pack.
A couple good deals from GOG.com. Today they added Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars, the first of the Broken Sword series, and in doing so are offering a 60% off promo for the trilogy. The promotion ends on Sunday, December 12 at 11:59 p.m. EDT
In addition they've released the Red Baron Pack and are selling it for $2.49 until 11:59 p.m. EDT (I loved this game when it was released but I don't think it's worth the $9.99 retail they intend to price it at; it's definitely worth today's $2.49 though).
Most of GOG.com's catalogue is on sale for up to 50% off for GOG's Holiday Promo so it's a good time to grab any games you want. There are 21 days left in the sale, though the sale on Atari's catalogue of games (inculding Baldur's Gate series and Neverwinter Nights, among other good games) ends in 6 days. Activision's GOG sale will start in another three days, though no word on how long they'll be discounted.
Also GOG is giving out a freebie game in Tyrian 2000 so click the download from the link to add it to your account.
The Witcher is now officially at GOG. Until May 24th it's selling for a measly five bucks and it's worth it for the extras alone (wallpapers, 2011/2012 calendar, soundtrack, 204 page artbook, and more).
Some big news over at GOG today. CDProjekt announced that the first week sales of The Witcher 2 was 400,000 units.
But the real news is EA has joined GOG to offer their classic titles. First up are Wing Commander: Privateer, Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld 1+2, which are all up for sale on GOG at this moment, each for $5.99. Crusader: No remorse, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Magic Carpet will follow soon, then there will be a break until summer for the following 20 or so titles in the deal. Unfortunately neither System Shock nor Syndicate is included in the deal.
For me I'll probably get Privateer and Alpha Centari, though I've still got way too many games I need to get through.

Bolbo Rogue of Twisted Legion - Fippy Darkpaw
Bolbo 89th Rogue of Test (Retired)
Trenix 85th Wizard of Test (Retired)
You kids will probably find it dated and clunky, but Crusader: No Remorse was a pretty fun game back in the day.
Word. I'm really excited about this. I had a PC Gamer subscription and played the crap out of the demo, but never had the full game. You can bet I'll buy it off of GOG. I believe it had a sequel as well (No Regret?).
Also excited about Magic Carpet, but I *really* want Magic Carpet 2 rather than the original. It was more fun than the first.
Also, Nordic Games has purchased JoWood, so they're offering a promo until Friday - 70% off if buying all 15 titles or 50% off individual titles (such as Painkiller Black Edition or the Spellforce series).
Yeah, pretty much only the Bioware and Black Isle/Obsidian games are the ones worth picking up if you don't have them already. Speaking of which, Alpha Protocol is $2 on Steam this weekend. It's well worth a playthrough.
Yes, Alpha Protocol is definitely worth $2; it's a good game with an annoying stealth waddle and a useless sniper rifle mechanic (I pity those who don't have a mouse that can change dpi on the fly; when picking up the sniper rifle I'd have to deaden my Logitech G5 from 1600dpi to 400dpi to be able to aim it properly).
Another GOG promo to note is that they're coming up on 6 million unique games downloaded. The lucky person who downloads game number 6 million gets GOG's current catalog for free and everyone else can get Broken Sword for free for 48 hours after the 6 millionth download.
It's shooting is kinda ****, but I don't play Obsidian games for their shooting mechanics. And for the rest of it, the parts I DO actually like about Obsidian games, this game totally has.
If you loved Deus Ex Human Revolution, then you should also enjoy Alpha Protocol.

Agreed. It's nowhere near as good as Deus Ex HR, but some of the gameplay and conversation tree mechanics are similar. There is one incredibly lame/cheap boss fight, but other than that I think I enjoyed the game.
It's probably worth $10, let alone 2.

A lot of the late game powers can really trivialize bossfights.
I was all stealth and pistols, and you can basically start any bossfight in hiding, freeze time, run up behind a boss and empty your clips into the back of his head, and if that doesn't kill him, you can run behind an object and vanish, and reset your cooldowns and do it again, and even on, like, hard, no boss ever lives through the second barrage.

I'm actually referring to a vehicular attack, so the above doesn't apply
I remember dying several times before I figured out a way to cheese it.
I went and signed up for GoG just because of this. They threw in Beneath a Steel Sky, and some other games that I hadn't heard of. All of that in exchange for one of my email addresses? Hells yes.
Probably means I'm going to be buying Planescape: Torment. Again.
Ruccus, have you played Fahrenheit? I remember when it came out and I was curious about it then. But I sure as heck dont remember it being AO! We didnt carry AO games(Minus the fun times when GTA:SA was re-rated as AO for a bit)

There's a certain beta who's server was down so I decided to play my recently purchased copy of Fahrenheit and I can definitely say it's AO, considering I just finished my gameplay session after a QTE that had two people having sex.
It's a set of novel game mechanics designed to really showcase a story, built on a story that really isn't up to the responsibility. It is interesting as an experimental game, a historical artifact, but I would only recommend it if you both have an interest in gaming and can't get a hold of Heavy Rain.
But is it any good? From a game stand point, not a porn standpoint
I think this review is fair and accurate regarding the game's strengths and weaknesses. I disagree with the thought that you should only get it if you can't find Heavy Rain; it has a similar style (and if you own and enjoyed Heavy Rain it makes a good companion game) but Fahrenheit is a good game in its own right.
The reason for not getting the game is if you don't like adventure style games, don't like quick time events, and can't tolerate a semi-fixed camera (it's fixed, but you can toggle between a few camera angles per area and scan around your area). It's part game, part interactive movie.
Oh damn... back in the day Syndicate was the shizzle (yes I did just say that). It's hard too. I managed to beat every mission except the final one and even that took some work. Then I tried the expansion, Syndicate Wars. I don't think I completed even one mission of that.
