Chat enable hits from Gmail with chat turned off
Reply With Quote   #1

There's not a lot of stuff our web use reports at work flag as unacceptable. Porn, gambling, gaming (which unfortunately also extends to NEWS sites, but ESPN and sports news sites are A-ok!), chat.

As such, I've always had my gmail account in standard view - which disables gtalk chat functions. Lately though, gmail users have been getting Chat hits, under ssl://chatenabled.mail.google.com. But not on every visit. Out of 100 hits on gmail, you might get 2 or 3 chat hits. It doesn't seem to be directly related to main page/account loading either. Those 100 hits compromise 10-20 different visits, still only a couple ssl chat hits.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Our supervisors and branch managers aren't worried about it, but if higher-ups (who typically know less and less about computers the higher up the chain you go) start to ask questions it could be an issue.

Can't you just leave yourself signed out of chat?

I am signed out. It's not even on. That's the issue. Unless there's something I'm completely missing about the way chat in gmail works, which is what I'm hoping to find.

They have a page on this, funny enough. They mention forwarding the address to 127.0.0.1. Could do that with a hosts file. Oh wait, do the users have access to edit that?

Nope, unfortuantely we do not. Frustrating as there have been many times over the years that "safe" pages were at times generating "unsafe" hits for me.

Oddly that page also describes simply turning off chat as a solution... too bad that's not 100%.

OK I did some more research and it looks like it's just trying to load an image from there. You can easily just AdBlock the address.

This is what it's trying to load:

Highslide JS

Just add the address as a filter in AdBlock:

https://chatenabled.mail.google.com/*

AdBlock will strip/block the address before the browser tries to load the page so no hit will be registered.

If you're not running Firefox (or Portable Firefox if it's not installed on the machine...) then I don't have a solution.

Unfortunately, not running firefox at work. I've pleaded, and the answer is always no. And we've been warned not to circumvent use of IE "for security reasons." Yeah, don't even get me started on that one.

I think my only option is just to start running in plain HTML version. Thanks for the help though!
