Yeah I think they did that part right. Hell, level 1, straight outta skipping the intro island, I get snagged by a group and hit level 2 without really doing anything other than wandering around, poking things. Nice drops, too. So nice not just being afk autoattack DPS bot.
Deleted the sorc even tho i was having fun, rolled a barbarian just for concept.
Running around with massive damage buffs and little-to-no armor class to speak of (even wearing adamantine +1 full plate) is pretty dangerous yet amusing... Hire a cleric, and it turns into a game of "can I kill this group of enemies before the cleric dies?". Very thrilling.
I figured that after a week and a half of F2P, that paying for a month to check out everything locked to me was worth it. Made meself a monk. Nifty thing is, I was finally able to ue a name I've been wanting to. Very few games let you use 24 character names, so I was overjoyed it went through.
Nah, halfling. Looks like freakin' yoda bouncing around.
Dunno what to make into a robot. Bastards, every third freakin' potion drop seems to be 'light repair', yet I get a cure light wounds about oooh once every three missions. I just know that's gonna reverse once i roll a warforged.
Robots are pretty good at everything, but I see more casters of them than anything else. I had a group with a robot Favored Soul healer, and it was super awesome. But I think it was like his 100th time playing through the game, so he knew the dungeons backwards and forwards.
Hrmm thats an idea. Was gonna try out a FS eventually, I may have to see what's what.
Still enjoying the heck outta monk. Too bad gear sucks balls to obtain when all people seem to want to run is irestone/WW elites. I stopped taking harbor groups all together just to TRY and get some halfway decent drops for a change. didnt help that I had a bad case of the "get a group that stands around for 15 minutes before doing anything, then fails, disbands, lather rinse repeat" last night. I actually spent more on repairs to my ghetto gear than I had made all night!
Have yet to multiclass anything. monk just hit 6, so still learning things. (monk still owns face, even rogue is taking a back seat)
Played a warforged FvS for a day. Problem is, I must have totally botched the build cause It's Crap. The random 'greatsword smash things' barb I made is more effective at not dying due to nothing surviving long enough to hurt me. Hell the robot had a DR of 4 at level 1 and it was still getting beat down between heals. Granted it prolly flips as the levels progress but it's just lame to play. Think i'll make im a sorc.
I'm researching ranger atm. the mutterings that ranged combat just isn't all that have me wondering.
Edit: teamed with a 2 rogue / 4 barb, he was loving it. Looked quite effective.
Unlocked drow. Was planning on making generic drow dual wielding ranger right up 'till i had two +2 dwarven axes drop. Now I have a dwarven ranger, which just plain amuses me. Named Yukkuri. I literally took me 10 minutes trying to get a name that the game would accept.
Wednesday's content update looks interesting. Starting out at level 4? Mixed bag. Starting out with pre-generated sets of gear? Not good. What if I wanna be unique and pick an unmatched or non-standard korthos set? Right now, rangers get the DEX set, and my ranger is STR based so the Anger's set is actually more desireable...
Course, it wont affect me, seeing as how it's like 1250 favor to unlock, and I just hit 400...
nope. You get a pre-generated set. It counts as having completed misery's peak (for some odd damn reason) so you can't go back and get another as you only get the MP end reward one time.
I just started DDO about a week and a half ago and I'm on the Ghallandra server too. Right now my "main" is lvl 8 (1rog, 7rng) and I'm having a blast. I mainly play after 8pm MT as Pantilly Layce (yes I play a chick... I made her look like the resident evil chick)
I have to admit the game thus far has captivated me. I've only actually joined one group for a hard Gladewatch quest that we failed when the overconfident barb who "could hold the bottom entry point solo" failed to do so.
I love the puzzles and the variety of quest difficulties. I have even upgraded my account to VIP so I could have access to all the content. Just unlocked Drow (400 favor) last night although their *bonus* stats don't really lend themselves to my preferred play style.
I've been kinda following the "exploiter ranger" build but I'm not sure I'm going to have the favor necessary to unlock Monk by the time I get to the level I'm supposed to splash one level of it.
But now that I got your attention, I have some true-newbie questions:
1. Casters are a real pain in my arse, especially the ones that do the Hold Person/Command type spells. What is the easiest way to raise my resists to avoid those effects? I have my ranger resist buffs (fire, sonic, electric, cold, acid) but those don't seem to help against those freeze you in place or knock you over spells.
2. Weapons... man so many things to know ! I do TWF and I have a feat in Kopesh. I've been playing the auction house and picked up a few upgrades but it's not really clear to me what is the best DPS for me. I have:
+4 Kopesh
+1 metalline kopesh of maiming
+1 true law warhammer of pure good (got at as end reward for Tangleroot hard, use mostly vs. undead)
+4 light mace
+1 impact light mace of pure good
Pillar of Light (+1 Quarterstaff of pure good... used against oozes)
+2 adamantine returning throwing dagger
Nicked Longbow (+1 with 1d6 shock dmg)
*some quarterstaff that lets me summon a hellhound 3x per rest*
*My understanding is that you need to only use 1 "heavy" weapon in your main hand and one light weapon in your offhand or you suffer a big minus to hit/dmg for your offhand. At least until you take the OTWF feat.. is that correct?
3. Stat tomes - I know you can't buy multiple +1str tomes since they don't stack, but if I use a +1 str tome then a +2 str tome do I get 3 total str or 2? If I used my DDO Store points to buy that +1 all stats tome can I still use regular +1 to a single stat tome as well?
4. Assuming I do unlock monk for a 1 level spash @ lvl 12, how does the wisdom AC bonus thing work? Is it automatic/passive or a feat I have to choose? Do I still wear my light armor or do I have to wear a robe?
5. I know (now) that multiple +stat items for the same stat do not stack, is the same true for + protection items?
6. Giants seem excessively annoying with that knockback club swing and the knockdowns. Am I missing some great tactic here on how to deal with them or is that just part of their charm? For example: I could easily do Redwillow Ruins on hard solo (and maybe elite) if not for the part where I step thru the portal and am almost guaranteed to get mobbed by 4-6 giants and 4-6 hobgoblins. Any more than 2 giants and I seem to get battered around like a paddleball or spend most of my time knocked down on my arse.
And I find it very annoying to get into quests where you have to have more than 2 people to stand on pressure plates or things like that. I don't mind having to bring along a hireling like when I had to park my hireling cleric at the gate switch in Denare #2 to flip the switch on the open-one-gate-close-another thing, but last night I was trying to do Necropolis 1 and one of the first 4 quests required you to have 4 people on pressure plates in two separate rooms.... very annoying and yes I realize it is a "group" game and not a solo game, I've just been mainly avoiding groups until I feel like I really have a grasp on some of the fundamentals.
Any other advice you want to lend would be great too!
hah, I'm just making it up as I go along. I haven't really gotten into the nitty-gritty of anything for once and decided to be more of a casual user than a 'omg must have perfect powerbuild' type.
I THINK hold and whatnot are plain spell resist and possibly will resist... Thyey usually say if you look up the actual spell in the compedium or in game.
no idea on the weaps. Handwraps are universally awesome. not steel, blunt, and I just let my special attacks and weapon effects deal with anything stong against blunt. My rogue did dual rapiers, so unless you have a terrible tohit i cant really say yea or nay on what to put offhand (tho I've seen several kopesh/hammer or mace so people dont have to swap as much).
no, it gets overwritten, same as any item bonuses. +2 beats +1, +3 beats +2 or +1. You get whatever is the highest. Same with protection items, but it's a good idea to just look at yer AC when equipping something cause every now and then something will stack because it's sneaky and counts as a different kind of bonus.
grouping is the best way to learn things. Really, i'll make a new char and join every group i can. you'd be amazed what people point out that you never thought of. (heavy repeating crossbows and bards? DEX-based monks? You don't say! Keep talking, this idea interests me...)
wisdom ac mod when multiclassed... dont really know. I know it'll work when using non-monk weapons, but I really think it'll only work with cloth armor. I suppose with the right robe/outfit and enough wis that it would make up for the AC.
Balance skill is the only thing I've seen for KB. well, that and not getting hit. 4 minotaur 'zerkers once charged me, knocked me down/away/off a ledge. was lulz cause i used monkheal whle they pathed down (taking massive trap damage) and I got my revenge.
And really, i'm still a noob, i just have an advanced grasp of mmo and dnd style play mechanics so I have a knack for guessing what works and what doesn't. Still many, many suprises.
Casters... Pretty much all the spells you're referring to have a will save. Best thing is to raise your Wisdom. Elven/Drow resistance to Enchantment may help with some of them.
Weapons... My 13rogue/1fighter carries 27 weapons. 6 Rapiers, 2 light mace/hammers, 3 kukuri, 1 dagger and 13 Shortswords. The blunts for "boney" things. The slashers for zombies and everything else for, well, everything else. I haven't really been able to figure out what's best to use against what yet either beyond the obvious. What the hell is an "Evil Outsider" (etc) anyway??
I've learned that you ARE much better off as long as you keep a light weapon in your offhand. That's why there are so many Shortswords in my list. I have Combat Expertese so I take a hit to my AB if I weild a heavy in my primary anyway so I just avoid them.
Tomes... If you have used a +1 tome, using a +2 will raise the stat by +1. If you then later use a +3 you will get another +1.
Wis AC.... No clue. Haven't been interested. However, my rogue is very close to switching to Cloth. I'm in the market for some +6 AC bracers. Once I find them I'll dump my +5 Mith Chain Shirt and put on the nice Deathblock Robe of Invulnerability I found a few levels back.
+Protection... Yes, it' the same.
Giants... Yeah, it's annoying as hell. If you think Giants are bad, you'll not care much for Air Elementals either. Balance seems to be the answer. I don't really know if it will totally prevent the knockdown but it will shorten how long you lay there.
Grouping is really the only way to go. Hirelings are great to get you through to level 4 or 5 but after that you really need to socialise.

Still having a blast. My character is up to level 15 now, 13 ranger 1 rogue 1 monk. 290hp and 43ac self buffed. I've been playing the AH some lately, sold 8 lightning-split soarwoods and 20 fragrant drowshards that I'd picked up through my earlier levels in the harbor and tangleroot... netted me about 700k platinum which I turned into some good gear at cheap prices by bidding instead of buying out.
Yeah I've been invited to a closed beta for another game, and I'm dusting off my ps3, AND getting back into playing my touhou collection... Now that my monthly point allotment has come thru (x2, no less!), and I've beat all my touhou collection.. i might get back into the swing of things.
