Why does he get a free pass for playing the same character in every movie, but a guy like Keanu Reeves gets crapped on? I mean, I like the man... but...

I'm watching Remember the Titans, and he has the same vocal inflections, the same exact mannerisms, as he had in Book of Eli. Sure Book of Eli he cuts people and stuff, but it's the same character. Calm, cool, collected, etc.

Same thing with:

Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Jason Statham... hell, nearly every single top grossing box office star, including actresses.

Will Smith actually has some range. However, the Smiths are a clan of ruiners and pillagers. I blame the father for I Am Legend and the son for the new The Day The Earth Stood Still. I don't know about Mrs. Smith, but I expect her to destroy some story I hold dear, as well.

Hav'nt seen it yet but how was his son in Karate Kid? I'd imagine he gets his acting chops from daddy.

While I was not sold on the new Karate kid movie as a whole, Jaden smith did a far better job acting then the original one did. Of course to be fair, the first one was honestly so bad I think a trained monkey could of done better, but I digress.

Are you honestly going to try and tell me his character in Training Day is anything like those other characters?

Also, unlike Keanu Reeves the character Denzel usually plays is...you know...good.

Because Denzel unlike Keanu is playing a Char , if Keanu was playing the Character of a Robot which his feeling program crashed on installing he would be perfect ,
Denzel in Training Day is not denzel in Remember the Titans , is not Denzel in Man on fire

He may look repeating his roles , because he is choosing what he is acting , just like Will smith , most of his roles are the same because he take the one that he feel he can play best
Keanu on the other hand , playing a Dummy with no feeling in Matrix , Constantine and Speed all these roles could have been playing with some feeling and didn't require an animatronic

What do you mean Keanu doesn't have range? This guy went from playing Ted Theodore Logan to John Constantine, two figures at pretty much opposite ends of the character spectrum. Whoa.

Why do people keep picking on poor Megan Fox like this?! Look, just because she couldn't show any acting chops in Transformers doesn't mean she doesn't have talent. Honestly, can't we go one month without having a thread about the poor girl?

Wait, why's everyone using the wrong pronoun for her? I got something wrong didn't I?

I have this theory that Keanu was lobotamized sometime after Bogus Journey as an explanation for how that happened.

I liked him in Training Day...but for the first half of the movie, I didn't really buy him in the role. He came across like a really educated black man who'd studied how to act ghetto. By the end it was all working a lot better.

Aside from Training Day, I thought he had some range in Man on Fire too. I can't remember anything else off the top of my head though where he plays anyone other than Denzel.

Seriously though, he's no worse than Clint Eastwood, or any of the other male leads that have done "When Men get pushed too far" movies.

Well, both their movies I find myself admiring their assets more than their abilities. Of course the same is true for a lot of actors. We just fixate on the ones like Megan Fox and Keanu because they make such good targets.

To be honest though, I've never been able to like Denzel as an actor. There's something too smooth about him no matter what he's playing. Whereas one movie with Will Smith did leave me going 'whoa, dude can act! Ok that is way scarier than those CGI things'. He does look really fine though, and manages to not kill his lines so I'm cool with him (as I am with Keanu though I'll still take the piss out of both).

I happen to agree with the Denzel is over-rated sentiment.

He talks and acts the same in pretty much any movie (yes, even Training Day). Sure, his character's motivations may differ from movie to movie, but his cadence, speech patterns, body language, expressions, etc... all pretty much one standard package.

Hey, I have no problem with Megan Fox. The only movies I've seen her in is one where she plays a hot high school and/or college girl. I don't it requires much acting ability to do that. She's also extremely hot in my opinion, hence... I watch her movies (Jennifer's Body was pretty cliche, but she was hot and played the role of "high school hottie who abuses nerdy girl and neglects their friendship" quite well... then she started eating people, which was interesting in it's own right).

Keanu is another one I have no issue with. He plays the roles he's given, which all happen to be kinda monotone and cheesy. <shrugs>

I don't have an issue with Denzel either, it's just that I noticed he's ALWAYS the same in his movies, yet nobody gives him the type of **** that they give Keanu (or Megan Fox, or Will Smith, or Scarlett Johannson, or whatever).

Also, another one on this trend lately is Robert Downey, Jr. I love the movies he's in, but compare Iron Man to Sherlock Holmes. It's the same character. Both are extremely intelligent, with interesting "Tech" (Iron Man moreso, clearly) in their lives, and both are highly dependent on drugs/alcohol.

Tom Cruise... pretty much the same... hell, Top Gun and Days of Thunder are the SAME EXACT MOVIE.

Worse than Van Helsing? Because that one is on my list of top (bottom?) 10 worst movies of all time and it looked somewhat similar.

You win. I completely forgot about Glory, and I love that movie. I even watched it just last fall. He does give a really good performance in it, and his character and acting is unlike his more recent movies.

I'd bet he doesn't get much crap for it because his movies generally are pretty good. What was the last Denzel Washington movie that flat out sucked? I don't know his filmography off the top of my head but the only movie he's been in I was kind of "meh" about was Taking of Pelham 123 and it wasn't a bad movie, just not all that great. The rest I generally think are pretty good -- the fact that I can't recall ever seeing him in a sequel probably has something to do with that though!

Edit: And Fallen is still one of my all time favorite movies.

He hasn't tried to make the movie to comedy though, which is where most non-comedians start cranking out bombs.
