need advice on new heater
Reply With Quote   #1

Hey all,
Im in the market for a new heater for this winter.
The space im heating is about 700 square feet, not the greatest insulation(will be taking care of that issue this spring)
im curently using kerosine heaters BUT, at $4.00+ / galon, i'll be going through about $400-$500 / month.
Im looking for something electric, as im tired of having to fill tanks/ go get fuel / smell/ no temp control/ etc.

I've seen a few heaters at my local TSC/Lowes/online, Infrared heaters, that are rated at 1500watts/5000ish btu's, suposed to heat up to 1000 square foot room, but i don't trust online reviews and i don't know anyone who has one, so if anyone here has one or knows someone who uses one, what do you think of them? will they actually heat a 700Sqft room?

Im not real concerned with the hit to my electric bill sine im already shelling out $400-$500 on kerosine, and if it works out to be the same money wise, it would be worth it just for less hassel. But considering these things run anywhere from $200-$400, im hoping some of you might have had some experience with these things.

here are a few examples:

EdenPURE GEN3 Model 1000 Quartz Infrared Heater $300.00
http://www.amazon.com/EdenPURE-Model...2542639&sr=8-6

LIFESMART Amish Inspired Power Plus 1200 Square Foot 6 Element $200.00
http://www.amazon.com/LIFESMART-Amis...2542639&sr=8-4

Comfort Zone Cherry Infrared Quartz Heater $300.00
http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Cherry...2542601&sr=8-1

Comfort Furnace Quartz Infrared Heater Tuscan Walnut $400.00
http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Furnac...2542601&sr=8-4

Any experience you all have would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks

I recommend something like these
https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...622&bih=1 045
one of those with an osculating fan behind it can heat a good sized space really well. it will take a while to heat it up though. (actually even the ones you linked will work better with a fan to push the air around too)

one other tip, if you have an unused room (or little used) close it off. no point in heating space you dont spend time in. even a blanket hanging over the doorway will stop most heat loss.

Life...is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that no one ever asks for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So, you're stuck with mostly undefinable whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there's nothing else to eat while you're watching the game. Sure, once in a while you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee but it's gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. In the end, you're left with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts, which if you are desperate enough to eat leaves nothing but an empty box of useless brown paper wrappers.-- Cancer Man.

I second the Oil heater. These are far more efficient at maintaining a room at a temperature. I used regular space heaters for years and played the hot cold game. I bought one of these a couple of years ago and it works so much better. I can set the temp I want and it works perfectly.

Don't buy a gimmik heater like the edenpure or the amish whatsajigger.

you can't do fancy math on an electric element heater to make it more efficient or provide more heat, a watt is a watt.

I would go with a standard oil heater as recommended above as well for your home.

Now this isn't to say commercial infrared heaters dont do what they're suppose to which is heat a spot outside of the spot its not warm inside the spot its warm.
