Well ya know, it's supposed that you're going to have a 12% mod on /something/ so you don't have to do without. And since it's a type 8 mod it's safe to say that without being 'endgame', you're going to have a tough time getting that one, yup yup.
Now, tack on the 4 damage aug and you'd have yourself a crazy ass weapon! (type 8 slots tho)
I think it looks cool; it's a weapon, not a ceremonial fashion accessory. That thing looks like it's made for disemboweling your opponents. Think about it...you backstab, it goes in and naturally wants to curl up a bit in its trajectory, then that upper bladeguard bit digs in, you give it a half twist and pull it out. It's like uncorking a fine bottle of wine, except that what comes out this time is mob guts.
Edit: Ooops...just noticed you might have been talking about the ranger sword, which does indeed look like crap warmed over a faulty hot plate. Edited by: ThornyEQ at: 2/24/04 11:04 am
You can't just make crazy designs and call them weapons ya know. It has to make sense from a combat perspective. Really, what is the point of all the curly crap that can't possibly make contact with flesh? The only part that is useful is the outter curved blade, and then its no different from a scimitar.
What it looks like is Looney Toons Knight's lance that got curled back from being exposed to a Dragon's firey breath, ie a completely useless and funny looking piece of junk.
Wow, talk about dropping the ball on weapon design. Then again this comes as NO shock to me what so ever. IMO SOE or Verant or what have you do NOT know what they are doing when they made weapon designs.
Now to me, the coolest part of armor accessories is the weapons. I could care less what armor looks like (but please no funny hats), but give me a bad ass weapon and I'm happy as a clam.
Now consider the fact that many High end velious weapons look like low end pieces of junk. One example is the Primal one handed warsword. Then they have weapon designs that couldn't possibly work. Consider the primal spear. Yeah it looks cool, but how the hell can you pierce with that rounded blade? Its so obviously a slashing weapon that it makes me laugh. I like how so many monk 2hb's all look like a cardboard tube. Thanks, that was nice. What they should have done is make the weapons look cooler and cooler as they get harder to get. Why do the trash weapons off of ldon mobs have cooler graphics than my stupid pitchfork i got off that huge guppy in NToV. WHY? WHY????!!!!!!!
From Kunark to Velious, the graphics got better, there were some decent looking weapons in Velious, from Velious to Luclin there was another jump, some of the weapons were pretty cool looking, even though like someone said before, some of the blades wouldnt be able to cut through flesh no matter what, but it doesnt matter. From Luclin to Planes of Power the weapon graphics were a HUGE jump, PoP weapons i thought were great, i would say about 80-90% of them were great looking with very nice detail (JTB, Ifir, EoE, etc). Once PoP ended...weapons went no where, LDoN wasnt anything good, and so far, GoD is BEYOND crap, the new weapons are terrible looking, the ranger sword might be the worst weapon graphic i've ever seen, and the rogue dagger looks like its bent the wrong way with a little spike which should be in the front instead. Whoever did the GoD graphics should be slapped.
Up until now the weapons in Everquest at least looked like they could be useful in one way or another. Sure a primal spear didn't look like a great piercer, but it did look like a decent slashing weapon. That ranger sword is, well its to awful to describe. I'd almost feel like I'd have to apologize everytime if I wore one.
Oh well, since its ranger only, heres hoping they reuse the graphic on a few more ranger swords.
trials today sporting one of those.. linking it and showing how pround he was that he had such an uber weapon...
I made a comment something like "Glad Im not a ranger, that weapon looks like @#%$". Now this is the funny part- and shows you why he is a ranger...
"I think it looks pretty cool".
Grats you and your guild on clearing time 35 times with the worlds only living brain donor.
If our 21/20 dagger from Ikkinz had that graphic, Id stick with my DoD (or hopefully JTB someday). Hell, if we have a dagger that is 25/10 and looks like that, we'll have some Bad ass damage dealing rogues in our guild but I won't be one of em.
Ranger: "Yo, check out the stats on my new slasher!"
Me: "Wow, that's awsome, gratz."
Ranger: "Yeah, and check out the crazy graphic, lol"
Me: "Umm, put it away? Never take it out again ever?"
Me: "My thoughts exactly."
It having no BS mod is a problem. It forces you to offhand another piercer and having to mainhand a piercer is restrictive enough as it is.
The real problem here is that SOE has no imagination (up to this point). The top end pokers in Velious, Luclin and PoP were all delay 19-20 (Bloodbath being the one exception at 21). Hello? Variety wru~ Well actually Velious had one other: Vyemm Fang at 13/17 was a somewhat interesting weapon.
Now this seems to be changing now (thank God) though perhaps not enough and not fast enough. But for example theres a mnk/bst 6/10 1hb out there. Hooray! A nonstandard weapon! Why doesn't SOE put in weapons for us like, say, 17/17? Or even 15/15? Let us make some choices about how we want to mix up our BS and melee damage (ie sacrificing one for the other).
Back to the Ikkinz poker and its (nonexistent) BS mod. How about another solution on the variety front? How about putting BS mods on... non-weapons! Yes, its a shocking idea I know and one I've /fedback numerous times. Why not have a BS mod aug? or a BS mod on some gloves somewhere? Or bracer or anythign really. C'mon SOE its not that difficult. If BS mods aren't on non-weapons then yes, basically every rogue piercer is forced to have a BS mod on it. The smart money is on this weapon getting one in a patch or two.
Frankly, at this point, I'd be fine with a backstab mod AA. Augments or armor featuring a backstab mod (e.g. not the +20 backstab on Time BP but a 12% + the +20) would not be exactly out of the question either in my book.
No matter though, I'm confident this was simply another case of the devs not itemizing new content fully and we shall likely see v1.02s of all the "newer" items. Now, they may nerf things in the process but somehow I don't think so. GoD seems to actually be encouraging a truely massive increase in player-power. The effects this will have still make me shudder a but though, as the casual-raider to uber-raider gap is about to widen even more. I fully expect by the end of this expansion that PoT will be thought of more like VT than as end-game. Looking forward I can imagine posts along the lines of: "Do we really need PoT to progress in Qvic?"
